Abstract Bobbin lace is a fibre art form in which threads are braided together to form a fabric, often with a very detailed and complex design. In traditional practice, each region of the fabric is filled with a periodic texture. We establish the groundwork for non-periodic lace patterns and present three new quasiperiodic families based on Sturmian words, the Penrose tiling by thick and thin rhombs and the Ammann-bar decoration of the Penrose tiling.

Abstract Inspired by a new mathematical model for bobbin lace, this paper considers finite lattice paths formed from the set of step vectors $\mathfrak{A}=$$\{\rightarrow,$ $\nearrow,$ $\searrow,$ $\uparrow,$ $\downarrow\}$ with the restriction that vertical steps $(\uparrow, \downarrow)$ cannot be consecutive. The set $\mathfrak{A}$ is the union of the well known Motzkin step vectors $\mathfrak{M}=$$\{\rightarrow,$ $\nearrow,$ $\searrow\}$ with the vertical steps $\{\uparrow, \downarrow\}$. An explicit bijection $\phi$ between the exhaustive set of vertically constrained paths formed from $\mathfrak{A}$ and a bisection of the paths generated by $\mathfrak{M}$ is presented. In a similar manner, paths with the step vectors $\mathfrak{B}=$$\{\nearrow,$ $\searrow,$ $\uparrow,$ $\downarrow\}$, the union of Dyck step vectors and constrained vertical steps, are examined. We show, using the same $\phi$ mapping, that there is a bijection between vertically constrained $\mathfrak{B}$ paths and the subset of Motzkin paths avoiding horizontal steps at even indices. Generating functions are derived to enumerate these vertically constrained, partially directed paths when restricted to the half and quarter-plane. Finally, we extend Schr\"{o}der and Delannoy step sets in a similar manner and find a bijection between these paths and a subset of Schr\"{o}der paths that are smooth (do not change direction) at a regular horizontal interval.

Abstract One of the most extraordinary episodes in British royal history took place on 15 December 1785 when George, Prince of Wales (later Prince Regent and George IV) secretly married the beautiful, twice-widowed and Roman Catholic Maria Fitzherbert. This marriage was in breach of the Royal Marriages Act of 1772 but was almost certainly valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church, and possibly of all Christian churches. If it had been discovered, George might well have forfeited his claim to the throne. As it was, George and Maria remained together for over twenty-five years, staying deeply attached, de

    Abstract: Given two $n$-vertex polygons, $P=(p_1, \ldots, p_n)$ lying in the $xy$-plane at $z=0$, and $P'=(p'_1, \ldots, p'_n)$ lying in the $xy$-plane at $z=1$, a banded surface is a triangulated surface homeomorphic to an annulus connecting $P$ and $P'$ such ... ...

Abstract Given two $n$-vertex polygons, $P=(p_1, \ldots, p_n)$ lying in the $xy$-plane at $z=0$, and $P'=(p'_1, \ldots, p'_n)$ lying in the $xy$-plane at $z=1$, a banded surface is a triangulated surface homeomorphic to an annulus connecting $P$ and $P'$ such that the triangulation's edge set contains vertex disjoint paths $\pi_i$ connecting $p_i$ to $p'_i$ for all $i =1, \ldots, n$. The surface then consists of bands, where the $i$th band goes between $\pi_i$ and $\pi_{i+1}$. We give a polynomial-time algorithm to find a banded surface without Steiner points if one exists. We explore connections between banded surfaces and linear morphs, where time in the morph corresponds to the $z$ direction. In particular, we show that if $P$ and $P'$ are convex and the linear morph from $P$ to $P'$ (which moves the $i$th vertex on a straight line from $p_i$ to $p'_i$) remains planar at all times, then there is a banded surface without Steiner points.

Abstract Understanding the determinants of early introduction of sugar sweetened beverages (SSBs) may assist in designing effective public health interventions to prevent childhood weight related conditions (obesity). This study explores the relationship between family/infant characteristics and the early introduction of SSBs among infants in Sydney, Australia. Mothers (n = 934) from an ongoing birth cohort study were interviewed at 8, 17, 34, and 52 weeks postpartum. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify family/infant factors independently associated with the likelihood of early introduction of SSBs (<52 weeks of age). Of the 934 mothers interviewed, 42.7% (n = 399) of infants were introduced to SSBs before 52 weeks. Mothers who were born in Vietnam (adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 2.14; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.33, 3.47), other Asian countries (AOR = 1.62; 95% CI 1.02, 2.58) as well as single mothers (AOR = 3.72; 95% CI 2.46, 5.62) had higher odds of introducing SSBs early to their infants. Mothers from highly advantaged socioeconomic background (AOR = 0.43; 95% CI 0.28, 0.68), those who breastfed their baby for 17–25 weeks (AOR = 0.60; 95% CI 0.37, 0.99), 26–51 weeks (AOR = 0.65; 95% CI 0.45, 0.94), and 52 weeks or more (AOR = 0.62; 95% CI 0.43, 0.90); and those who introduced solids between 17–25 weeks (AOR = 0.58; 95% CI 0.36, 0.91) and 26 weeks or more (AOR = 0.55; 95% CI 0.34, 0.91) had reduced odds of introducing SSBs early. Tailoring health promotion programs for these vulnerable groups may delay the introduction of SSBs.

Abstract Aim: This paper is a report of a study to explain how mothers used a community based, cohort-based electronic communication system.
Background: Early psychosocial support for families is regarded as inadequate. Employed women with young children can feel isolated from other families. Most parent e-mail lists are in a read-only format, with parents receiving informative e-mails from a corporation or a commercially motivated initiative. In an increasingly virtual age, it is important to examine parents' use of online support groups initiated by parents.
Method: We used a qualitative descriptive design to conduct an inductive content analysis of archived threads of e-mail from 40 middle class Canadian mothers involved in a grass-roots online support cohort that shared birth year and geographical community. Two hundred and ninety-two pages of single-spaced mother-based communication that occurred from June 2004 to May 2005 were analysed.
Findings: Mothers used cohort-based electronic communication to build a local community, request and provide emotional support, share information and facilitate learning, and provide validation for the 'normalcy' of other women's mothering experiences. They shared stories and feelings, expressed sympathy, offered accolades, expressed appreciation for shared experiences, conveyed gratitude for support, and shared beliefs and expectations. Mothers anticipated childrearing difficulties shared strategies, exchanged advice, confirmed others' strategies and shared information.
Conclusion: Women in particular geographical areas can use asynchronous mail systems to share information with and obtain support from other mothers. Cohort-based electronic communication could be particularly important in rural areas where travel is restricted for women and access to professional support is limited.

Abstract $\Theta_6$-Graphs graphs are important geometric graphs that have many applications especially in wireless sensor networks. They are equivalent to Delaunay graphs where empty equilateral triangles take the place of empty circles. We investigate lower bounds on the size of maximum matchings in these graphs. The best known lower bound is $n/3$, where $n$ is the number of vertices of the graph. Babu et al. (2014) conjectured that any $\Theta_6$-graph has a (near-)perfect matching (as is true for standard Delaunay graphs). Although this conjecture remains open, we improve the lower bound to $(3n-8)/7$. We also relate the size of maximum matchings in $\Theta_6$-graphs to the minimum size of a blocking set. Every edge of a $\Theta_6$-graph on point set $P$ corresponds to an empty triangle that contains the endpoints of the edge but no other point of $P$. A blocking set has at least one point in each such triangle. We prove that the size of a maximum matching is at least $\beta(n)/2$ where $\beta(n)$ is the minimum, over all theta-six graphs with $n$ vertices, of the minimum size of a blocking set. In the other direction, lower bounds on matchings can be used to prove bounds on $\beta$, allowing us to show that $\beta(n)\geq 3n/4-2$.

Abstract Departments of geriatric medicine engage in two distinct forms of clinical activity: acute/rehabilitative and long-stay care. These are organizationally distinct and have very different resource needs. Current hospital planning models, however, assume that patients all move through the system at the same rate, thereby ignoring this effect of inherent heterogeneity in patient behaviour. The present paper describes the movement of patients through geriatric hospitals by a two-stage continuous-time Markov model, where the stages represent acute/rehabilitative and long-stay patients respectively. Patients are initially admitted to the first stage, from which they may depart from the system, by death or discharge, or move into the second stage, from which they eventually depart by death or discharge (unlikely). Admissions are modelled in two ways: either as replacements for departures or as a Poisson stream. Expressions for the distribution and movement of numbers of patients are derived and evaluated for data from a number of hospitals. Such an approach has the advantage, over previous crude models, of taking into account different types of patients and introducing variability, thus making it possible to extract variances as well as means of numbers of geriatric patients requiring hospital care.
