    Abstract Abstract Based on Fourier analysis, we develop an expression for modeling and simulating nonlinear first order systems. This expression is associated to a nonlinear first order differential equation $$y=f(x)+g(x)x'$$ y = f ( x ) + g ( x ) x ′ , where $$x=x(t)$$ x = x ( t ) is the dynamical variable, $$y=y(t)$$ y = y ( t ) is the driving force, and the f and g functions are the characteristic curves which are associated to dissipative and memory elements, respectively. The model is obtained from the sinusoidal response, specifically by calculating the Fourier analysis of y(t) for $$x(t)=A_1\sin (\omega t)+A_0$$ x ( t ) = A 1 sin ( ω t ) + A 0 , where the model parameters are the Fourier coefficients of the response, and the values of $$A_0$$ A 0 , $$A_1$$ A 1 and $$A_1'=A_1\omega$$ A 1 ′ = A 1 ω . The same expression is used for two kinds of time-domain simulations: to calculate other driving force $$\hat{y}$$ y ^ based on a dynamical variable $$\hat{x}$$ x ^

and, to calculate the dynamical variable $$\hat{x}$$ x ^ based on a driving force $$\hat{y}$$ y ^ . In both cases, the dynamical variable must remain in the range $$\hat{x}\in [A_0-A_1,A_0+A_1]$$ x ^ ∈ [ A 0 - A 1 , A 0 + A 1 ] . By analyzing this expression, we found an equivalence between the Fourier coefficients and the polynomial regressions of the characteristic curves of f and g. This result allows us to obtain the system modeling and simulation based on the amplitude and phase Fourier spectrum obtained from the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the sampled $$y_n$$ y n version of y(t). It is shown that this technique has a low computational complexity, and it is expected to be suitable for real-time applications for system modeling, simulation and control, in particular when the explicit expressions of the characteristic curves are unknown. Fourier analysis is a fundamental tool in electronics, mathematics and physics, but to the best of the author’s knowledge, no work has found this clear evidence of the connection between the Fourier analysis and a ...

Abstract The philosophico-methodological analysis of the social dimension of the Internet, seen from the complexity —structural and dynamic— requires considering several aspects. 1) The Internet —network of networks— is a complex, polyhedral system. A major component is the social dimension. 2) The philosophico-methodological configuration of the Internet —in a broad sense— is structurally triadic: scientific activity, technological undertaking and social reality. 3) The scientific perspective, seen from the social sciences, reflects the social dimension in the Internet sciences and possibilities related to the network. 4) The technological facet of the Internet —in the strict sense— uses different kinds of technologies. The social dimension concerns different companies, which have different repercussions for the users. 5) Three types of social activity are related to the Internet, connected with design, use and those derived from use. Their dynamics are permeated by historicity. 6) The social dimension of the Web from social networks shows three types of activity. They combine sociability with historicity. 7) Several types of methods are in the social dimension of the Web. They are diversified according to the relevance of the researcher’s presence in each method. 8) Social problems on the Web are of particular importance, as can be seen with cybersecurity.

Abstract Proper and innovative waste management methods still pose a major concern in our present world. Continuous accumulation of biowaste from bio-processing industries, household, organic residues and so on makes the environment polluted and endangers the health of man and other animals. The common waste management methods which include direct dumping into water bodies, open-air combustion, and as land fillers are obsolete and are the major causes of environmental pollution. Conversion of biowastes into valuable materials aids proper waste management, and helps to attain a cleaner environment, in addition to the fact that wastes are turned into wealth. Biowastes are rich in carbon and can serve as excellent precursors for the synthesis of important carbon materials such as activated carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes etc. Three important methods of converting biowastes into carbon materials are discussed in this review. The electrochemical, adsorption, and electrocatalytic properties of the materials and the applications in electrochemical energy storage devices are also discussed in brief. This review focuses on the synthesis of carbon materials from biowaste residues and their use in developing electrode materials for batteries and supercapacitors. Future perspectives on the need to exploit greener technology for the conversion of biowastes into important carbon materials should be considered.

Abstract Through the monographic issue “From the Social Sciences to the Sciences of the Artificial: New Philosophical Perspectives”, the aim to broaden the usual philosophical-methodological scope of action on science. Thus, the conceptual framework is provided by two main factors: 1) to foster greater recognition of the social sciences as a field of reflection, since they usually receive much less attention than the natural sciences; and 2) to highlight the need to address issues of the sciences of the artificial, due to the growing importance of the design sciences in the contemporary world, which contrasts with the scarce presence they have in the dominant trend in contemporary philosophy and methodology of science. The contents of this monographic issue have a bearing on several aspects: (i) offering novelties in horizontal or longitudinal terms, which leads to the consideration of new approaches, especially in the disciplines of the social sciences; and (ii) looking for vertical or transversal novelties, to deal with new issues and to go deeper into disciplines that have not received sufficient attention, especially in the field of design sciences. It is within this framework that details are given of the articles in this volume.

Abstract Active hotspot volcanism is the surface expression of ongoing dynamic subsurface changes, such as the generation, transport, and stalling of magmas within the upper mantle and crust. Magmatic influx and migration affects local stress patterns in the crust and lithospheric mantle, which influences seismic anisotropy. A better understanding of those patterns helps improve robustness of models forecasting the likelihood of an eruption and prolonged seismicity, with detailed studies being required to observe the significant variations that can occur on small spatial and temporal scales. Here, we investigate seismic anisotropy before, during and after volcanic eruptions. We use local seismicity around El Hierro and La Palma, the two westernmost islands in the Canaries and sites of the most recent volcanic eruptions in the archipelago. We obtained 215 results in El Hierro during and after the 2011/2012 eruption with five three-component broadband seismic stations and 908 results around the 2021 eruption in La Palma with two three-component broadband stations. On La Palma, the majority of seismicity and splitting results are recorded during the eruption and simultaneous deflation of the island. Seismicity locations do not change significantly and fast shear wave polarisation direction is mostly constant, but some variation can be attributed to changes in the magmatic plumbing system. On El Hierro, the general radial pattern reflects stresses induced by the overall uplift of the island during multiple magma intrusion events. Temporal subsets reveal significant variations in location and depth of the events, as well as significant variations in fast polarisation direction caused by ongoing dynamic changes of under- and overpressurisation. An increase of results starting in 2018 hints towards renewed subsurface activity within deeper parts of the plumbing system, affecting the rate of overall seismicity but not any vertical movement of the island.

Abstract Image-guided interventional procedures have become one of the medical applications that produces the highest doses of radiation for both the patient and the personnel involved in it. Safety assessment was applied to a generic service where image-guided interventional procedures was carried, using the semi-quantitative method of risk matrix, implemented in the Cuban SECURE-MR-FMEA code. The process map was prepared, identifying 6 stages with 76 accidental sequences. Values showed that the first screening for the developed model reports 45 % of high risks, 42% and 13 % of moderate and low risks, and once the number of controllers increased, high risks decrease to 11 % and there is an increase in moderate and low risks of 54 % and 35 % respectively. These results stress the importance of using all necessary measures for the protection of the public, patients and occupationally exposed workers.
