    Abstract Abstract Ependymal cells, a dormant population of ciliated progenitors found within the central canal of the spinal cord, undergo significant alterations after spinal cord injury (SCI). Understanding the molecular events that induce ependymal cell activation after SCI represents the first step toward controlling the response of the endogenous regenerative machinery in damaged tissues. This response involves the activation of specific signaling pathways in the spinal cord that promotes self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation. We review our current understanding of the signaling pathways and molecular events that mediate the SCI-induced activation of ependymal cells by focusing on the roles of some cell adhesion molecules, cellular membrane receptors, ion channels (and their crosstalk), and transcription factors. An orchestrated response regulating the expression of receptors and ion channels fine-tunes and coordinates the activation of ependymal cells after SCI or cell transplantation. Understanding the major players in the activation of ependymal cells may help us to understand whether these cells represent a critical source of cells contributing to cellular replacement and tissue regeneration after SCI. A more complete understanding of the role and function of individual signaling pathways in endogenous spinal cord progenitors may foster the development of novel targeted therapies to induce the regeneration of the injured spinal cord.

    Abstract Accordingly to its known function in corticospinal tract (CST) developmental growth, previous reports have shown an inhibitory role of Wnt5a in CST regeneration after spinal cord injury (SCI). Interestingly, it has been subsequently demonstrated that Wnt5a also modulates the developmental growth of non-CST axons and that different Wnt5a receptors are expressed in neurons, oligodendrocytes, NG2+ glial precursors and reactive microglia/macrophages and astrocytes after SCI. However, the role of Wnt5a in the response of these cell types, in the regeneration of non-CST axons and in functional recovery after SCI is currently unknown. To evaluate this, rats were subjected to spinal cord contusion and injected with a lentiviral vector generated to overexpress Wnt5a. Histological analyses were performed in spinal cord sections processed for the visualization of myelin, oligodendrocytes, neurons, microglia/macrophages, astrocytes, NG2+ glial precursors and serotonergic axons. Motor and bladder function recovery were also assessed. Further advancing our knowledge on the role of Wnt5a in SCI, we found that, besides its previously reported functions, Wnt5a overexpression elicits a reduction on neuronal cell density, the accumulation of NG2+ glial precursors and the descending serotonergic innervation in the affected areas, along with impairment of motor and bladder function recovery after SCI.

    Abstract Abstract Previous studies have proposed that low evidential criteria or proneness to jump to conclusions influences the formation of paranormal beliefs. We investigated whether the low evidential criteria hypothesis for paranormal beliefs extends to a conceptually distinct type of unwarranted beliefs: those related to pseudoscience. We presented individuals varying in their endorsement of pseudoscientific beliefs with two hypothesis testing tasks. In the beads task, the participants were asked to decide from which of two jars containing different proportions of colored beads they were collecting samples. In the mouse trap task, they were asked to guess which rule determined whether a participant-controlled mouse obtained a piece of cheese or was trapped. In both cases, the volunteers were free to decide when to stop collecting evidence before completing the tasks. Our results indicate that, compared to skeptics, individuals presenting stronger endorsement of pseudoscientific beliefs tend to require less evidence before coming to a conclusion in hypothesis testing situations.

    Abstract El artículo analiza los efectos de las desigualdades de clase social en Argentina en 2014-2015 en tres dimensiones de las condiciones de vida: los ingresos, los bienes y los activos económico-financieros de los hogares. Como fuente de información utilizamos la Encuesta Nacional sobre la Estructura Social del Programa de Investigación sobre la Sociedad Argentina Contemporánea. Con base en el Clasificador Socio-Ocupacional (Torrado, 1998), elaboramos categorizaciones de clases y de trayectorias de movilidad. Los resultados muestran diferencias significativas entre clases y también heterogeneidades internas según trayectorias intergeneracionales.

    Abstract Esta investigación tiene por objetivo conocer la influencia que tiene la represión sexual en los deseos sexuales en personas dedicadas a la vida eclesiástica. La metodología se basó en la realización de dos pruebas psicométricas, el inventario de culpabilidad sexual y la escala SDS; se trató de una muestra no probabilística de 100 personas dedicadas al celibato, con edades de 27 años a 78 años como máximo; en los resultados se encontró que en el género masculino poseen más afectaciones en cuanto a la represión sexual que en el género femenino, al mismo tiempo se halló que el 93% de los participantes poseen represiones altas, mientras que el 100% mostró deseos sexuales altos, finalmente y dando una correlación positiva de .594, se determina que mientras mayor represión exista, mayores deseos sexuales existirá. Concluyendo que las personas dedicadas al celibato padecerán altas represiones en intento de controlar los deseos sexuales.

    Abstract Operative parameters of La Fuenfría Hospital such as: hospitalized patients; daily admissions and discharges were studies for the hospital as a whole, and for each hospital's service unit (henceforth called 'services'). Conventional statistical analyzes and fractal dimension analyzes were performed on daily In-Patient series. The sequence of daily admissions and patients staying on each service were found to be a kind of random series known as random walks (Rw), sequences where what happens next, depends on what happens now plus a random variable. Rw analyzed with parametric or nonparametric statistics may simulate cycles and drifts which resemble seasonal variations or fake trends which reduce the Hospital's efficiency. Globally, inpatients Rw s in LFH, were found to be determined by the time elapsed between daily discharges and admissions. The factors determining LFH R were found to be the difference between daily admissions and discharges. The discharges are replaced by admissions with some random delay and the random difference determines LFH Rw s. These findings show that if the daily difference between admissions and discharges is minimized, the number of inpatients would fluctuate less and the number of unoccupied beds would be reduced, thus optimizing the Hospital service.

    Abstract La histerectomía en la India ha generado sospechas por su aumento inusual en mujeres jóvenes, analfabetas y pobres de zonas rurales. El objetivo del trabajo es analizar la relación entre violencia obstétrica, explotación laboral agrícola, prácticas médicas no éticas y tabúes relativos al útero y la menstruación. La metodología estuvo basada en una revisión bibliográfica sistemática mediante motores de búsquedas académicos que posibilitaron localizar las publicaciones más actuales y significativas sobre la problemática tratada. Los resultados indican que la práctica de la histerectomía está normalizada en la India y que resulta funcional al sistema capitalista, al sistema sanitario y a las pacientes para conseguir o conservar el empleo. Se concluye con la necesidad de activar auditorias médicas, destinar esfuerzos para lograr una mayor transparencia de los servicios sanitarios y centrar la atención sanitaria en una perspectiva de derechos humanos, con un enfoque de género que, especialmente empodere a las mujeres de bajo recursos para tomar decisiones que afectan a su propio cuerpo.

    Abstract Con una larga historia, el problema del narcotráfico ha ido incrementándose en las últimas décadas hasta alcanzar dimensiones globales. Este artículo estudia la evolución y el estado actual de la estrategia normativa de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas y la Unión Europea contra este problema, que actualmente se encuentra inserto en las redes del crimen organizado transnacional, en especial las redes transatlánticas. Se concluye que, a pesar de todo el ingente esfuerzo en esta lucha, lejos de combatirlo eficazmente, los resultados son muy pobres, tanto en los contextos nacionales más afectados como a nivel global.
