Abstract China's global expansion has led to concerns amongst other developing country exporters that they will be displaced by Chinese competition in their export markets. The paper develops a new index to measure the extent of the competitive threat which countries face from China, which is then applied to empirical data on US imports from China and 18 Latin American countries. It also presents new estimates of the impact of China on the value of Latin American exports to the US over the past decade, using an extension of constant market share analysis. It finds that, contrary to many previous studies, China has had a significant impact on the exports of a number of Latin American countries and that this has increased since China joined the WTO in 2001. -- China

Abstract Spectral pre-processing is an essential step in data analysis for biomedical diagnostic applications of Raman spectroscopy, allowing the removal of undesirable spectral contributions that could mask biological information used for diagnosis. However, due to the specificity of pre-processing for a given sample type and the vast number of potential pre-processing combinations, optimisation of pre-processing via a manual "trial and error" format is often time intensive with no guarantee that the chosen method is optimal for the sample type. Here we present the use of high-performance computing (HPC) to trial over 2.4 million pre-processing permutations to demonstrate the optimisation on the pre-processing of human serum Raman spectra for colorectal cancer detection. The effect of varying pre-processing order, using extended multiplicative scatter correction, spectral smoothing, baseline correction, binning and normalization was considered. Permutations were assessed on their ability to detect patients with disease using a random forest (RF) algorithm trained with 102 patients (510 spectra) and independently tested with a set of 439 patients (1317 spectra) in a primary care patient cohort. Optimising via HPC enables improved performance in diagnostic abilities, with sensitivity increasing by 14.6%, specificity increasing by 6.9%, positive predictive value increasing by 3.4%, and negative predictive value increasing by 2.4% when compared to a standard pre-processing optimisation. Ultimate values of these metrics are very important for diagnostic adoption, and once diagnostics demonstrate good accuracy these types of optimisations can make a significant difference to roll-out of a test and demonstrating advantages over existing tests. We also provide tips/recommendations for pre-processing optimisation without the use of HPC. From the HPC permutations, recommendations for appropriate parameter constraints for conducting a more basic pre-processing optimisation are also detailed, thus helping model development for researchers not having access to HPC.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of recruiting participants diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF) taking oral anticoagulation therapies (OATs) and recently experiencing a bleed to collect health-related quality of life (HRQoL) information.
Design: Observational feasibility study. The study aimed to determine the feasibility of recruiting participants with minor and major bleeds, the most appropriate route for recruitment and the appropriateness of the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) selected for collecting HRQoL information in AF patients, and the preferred format of the surveys.
Setting: Primary care, secondary care and via an online patient forum.
Participants: The study population was adult patients (≥18) with AF taking OATs who had experienced a recent major or minor bleed within the last 4 weeks.
Primary and secondary outcome measures: Primary outcomes
Results: We received initial expressions of interest from 103 participants. We subsequently recruited 32 participants to the study-14 from primary care and 18 through the AF forum. No participants were recruited through secondary care. Despite 32 participants consenting, only 26 initial surveys were completed. We received follow-up surveys from 11 participants (8 primary care and 3 AF forum). COVID-19 had a major impact on the study.
Conclusions: Primary care was the most successful route for recruitment. Most participants recruited to the study experienced a minor bleed. Further ways to recruit in secondary care should be explored, especially to capture more serious bleeds.
Trial registration number: The study is registered in the Clinicaltrials.gov database, NCT04921176.
