Abstract The coordination environment of Fe(II) significantly affect the reductive reactivity of Fe(II). Lactate is a common substrate for enhancing microbial dechlorination, but its effect on abiotic Fe(II)-driven reductive dechlorination is largely ignored. In this study, the structure-reactivity relationship of Fe(II) is investigated by regulating the ratio of lactate:Fe(II). This work shows that lactate-Fe(II) complexing enhances the abiotic Fe(II)-driven reductive dechlorination with the optimum lactate:Fe(II) ratio of 10:20. The formed hydrogen bond (Fe-OH∙∙∙∙∙∙O = C-) and Fe-O-C metal-ligand bond result in a reduced Fe(II) coordination number from six to four, which lead to the transition of Fe(II) coordination geometry from octahedron to tetrahedron/square planar. Coordinatively unsaturated Fe(II) results in the highest reductive dechlorination reactivity towards carbon tetrachloride (k

Abstract The use of ferrate has been demonstrated as a highly efficient technique for the removal of pollutants in water and wastewater treatment. While most of the published work about ferrate investigated the treatment performance by ferrate alone, new applications of ferrate expand to the synergistic application of ferrate with other techniques such as membrane separation, sulphur-based chemical use, UV radiation, ozonation, acidification, and other chemical additives. This paper aims to review and explore the treatment performance and reaction mechanisms associated with synergistic applications of ferrate. The main objective of this study is to conduct case studies on the synergistic application of ferrate with other water processes. It was found that the efficiency of water treatment increased significantly by the synergistic application of ferrate, and this is attributed to the alleviation of membrane fouling, the activating the formation of more radical oxidative species, enhanced coagulation, and the potential improvement of micropollutants’ biodegradability. Therefore, the stated ferrate technology holds high potential for improving the efficiency of water treatment and other environmental remediation processes. Further studies are required to explore a more feasible combination of ferrate with other techniques and expand the understanding of the working mechanisms of the known synergistic applications of ferrate.

Abstract Non-tuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) skin infections have become increasingly prevalent in recent years, presenting a unique challenge in clinical management. This review explored the complexities of NTM infections localized to the superficial tissues and provided valuable insights into the optimal therapeutic strategies. The antibiotic selection should base on NTM species and their susceptibility profiles. It is recommended to adopt a comprehensive approach that considers the unique characteristics of superficial tissues to improve treatment effectiveness and reduce the incidence of adverse reactions, infection recurrence, and treatment failure. Infection control measures, patient education, and close monitoring should complement the treatment strategies to achieve favorable outcomes in managing NTM skin infections. Further efforts are warranted to elucidate factors and mechanisms contributing to treatment resistance and relapse. Future research should focus on exploring novel treatment options, innovative drug development/delivery platforms, and precise methodologies for determining therapeutic duration. Longitudinal studies are also needed to assess the long-term safety profiles of the integrated approaches.
