    Abstract The flat band system is an ideal quantum platform to investigate the kaleidoscope created by the electron-electron correlation effects. The central ingredient of realizing a flat band is to find its compact localized states. In this work, we develop a systematic way to generate compact localized states by designing destructive interference patterns from 1-dimensional chains. A variety of 2-dimensional new flat band systems are constructed with this method. Furthermore, we show that the method can be extended to generate the compact localized states in multi-orbital systems by carefully designing the block hopping scheme, as well as in quasicrystal and disorder systems.

    Abstract Objective: The study aimed to set up and validate a predictive nomogram for post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans in severe pneumonia.
    Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data of 228 patients diagnosed with severe pneumonia and constructed a prediction nomogram. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model was utilized to optimize the selection of features for the clinical characteristics of post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans. Individual nomograms of bronchiolitis obliterans incorporating clinical factors were developed using the multivariate logistic model. The C-index, calibration plot, and decision curve analysis were used to verify the calibration, discrimination, and clinical utility. The bootstrapping method was used for the internal validation of the model.
    Results: Predictors in the individualized predictive nomogram included age of patients (odds ratio [OR], 0.994; 95% confidence interval; [CI], 0.990-0.998), length of stay (OR, 1.043; 95% CI: 1.015-1.073), mechanical ventilation (OR, 1.865; 95% CI: 1.236-2.817), human adenoviral infection (OR, 1.671; 95%, CI: 1.201-2.326), and the level of interleukin (IL)-2 (OR, 0.947; 95% CI: 0.901-0.955). The model discriminated reasonably well, with a C-index of 0.907 (C-index, 0.888 and 0.926) with good calibration and internal validation, which was not statistically significant by the Hosmer-Lemeshow test (P = 0.5443). Decision curve analysis showed that nomograms were useful in clinical settings.
    Conclusion: In this study, a model was developed and presented as a nomogram with relatively good accuracy to help clinicians accurately and early diagnose post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans in children with severe pneumonia.

    Abstract Background: Mixed neuroendocrine and non-endocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) are challenging to diagnose and manage clinically. The current understanding of MiNENs' pathobiology, molecular mechanisms, and management is incomplete. Though microsatellite instability (MSI) is known to impact carcinogenesis, reports examining MSI mechanisms for MiNENs are rare.
    Methods: We report an unusual colonic MSI-MiNEN uncovered in an 89-year-old woman and the review of the literature.
    Results: Pathologic inspection revealed a high-grade carcinoma composed of tumor cells with neuroendocrine histologic traits and immunophenotype intermixed with mucin-containing signet ring-like cells arranged in nested and micronodular patterns. Loss of MLH1 and PMS2 mismatch repair proteins was detected in tumor cells. INSM1 immunostaining highlighted about 50% of the tumour, further reinforcing the MiNEN diagnosis. Next-generation sequencing identified multiple carcinogenic mutations. Because of the advanced stage of the tumor and its adhesion to the adjacent organs, surgical resection was aborted; immunotherapy was initiated. The tumor is in remission 30 months following initiation of treatment, and the patient remains asymptomatic.
    Conclusion: This unique MSI MiNEN was characterized by its immunohistochemical and molecular signatures and illustrated how correctly diagnosing MSI can strongly improve a patient's outcomes.

    Abstract A diatomic circular polarizer based on a single-layered metasurface is proposed. This metasurface circular polarizer carries the controllable phase besides the desired circular dichroism, which is different from the existing circular polarizers. The diatoms contain two nanoholes equivalent to half-wave plates with a specified cross angle and a fixed phase difference. The alternative circular polarization transmission of this circular polarizer depends on the relative angular position of diatoms, and the controllable phase of this circular polarizer can be adjusted through rotating nanoholes. The generation of the optical vortex and holographic imaging verifies the polarization and phase manipulation of the diatomic circular polarizer. The numerical simulations and the experimental measurement give the powerful verification. Simple design, compact structure, and poly-functionality enable the wide applications of circular polarizer in integrated and polarized optics.

    Abstract Cholelithiasis, commonly known as gallstones, represents a prevalent hepatobiliary disorder. This study aimed to elucidate the therapeutic role and mechanism of Danyankang capsulein treating cholelithiasis induced by a high-fat diet in C57BL/6 mice. The therapeutical potential of Danyankang was assessed through biochemical analyses, histopathological examinations, protein detection, and 16S rDNA sequencing. A high-fat diet resulted in cholelithiasis manifestation in mice, with discernable abnormal serum biochemical indices and disrupted biliary cholesterol homeostasis. Danyankang treatment notably ameliorated liver inflammation symptoms and rectified serum and liver biochemical abnormalities. Concurrently, it addressed biliary imbalances. Elevated expressions of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB)/pNF-κB, HMGCR, CYP7A1, and CYP8B1 observed at the inception of cholelithiasis, were notably reduced upon Danyankang administration. Furthermore, 16S rDNA analysis revealed a decline in species number and diversity of the intestinal flora in cholelithiasis-treated mice, while the decline was reversed with Danyankang treatment. Danyankang capsules reduced the abundance of Verrucomicrobiota and increased the abundance of Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates that Danyankang exerts potent therapeutic efficacy against high-fat diet-induced cholelithiasis. This beneficial outcome is potentially linked to the inhibition of the TLR4/pNF-κB and SHP/CYP7A1/CYP8B1 signaling pathways, as well as the enhancement of intestinal flora species abundance.

    Abstract The mass erosion of the kinetic energy of projectiles penetrating concrete targets at high speed is an important reason for the reduction in penetration efficiency. The heat generation and heat conduction in the projectile are important parts of the theoretical calculation of mass loss. In this paper, theoretical models are established to calculate the mass erosion and heat conduction of projectile noses, including models of cutting, melting, the heat conduction of flash temperature, and the conversion of plastic work into heat. The friction cutting model is modified considering the heat softening of metal, and a model of non-adiabatic processes for the nose was established based on the heat conduction theory to calculate the surface temperature. The coupling numerical calculation of the erosion and heat conduction of the projectile nose shows that melting erosion is the main factor of mass loss at high-speed penetration, and the mass erosion ratio of melting and cutting is related to the initial velocity. Critical velocity without melting erosion and a constant ratio of melting and cutting erosion exists, and the critical velocities are closely related to the melting temperature. In the process of penetration, the thickness of the heat affected zone (HAZ) gradually increases, and the entire heat conduction zone (EHZ) is about 5~6 times the thickness of the HAZ.

    Abstract Objective: Herein, we aimed at exploring the FAP expression in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) along with its clinical implication.
    Methods: Using computational tools analysis of different freely accessible gene databases, the expression pattern, clinical importance, co-expressed genes, and signaling pathways of FAP in ccRCC were thoroughly investigated. FAP expression was examined in clinical ccRCC specimens through qRT-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Furthermore, in vitro and in vivo experiments were carried out using flow cytometry, CCK-8, wound-healing and Transwell assays, as well as xenograft tumor model, respectively.
    Results: FAP levels were found to be significantly elevated in ccRCC based on bioinformatic data from public databases. Patients who exhibited higher expression levels of FAP had poorer prognoses, according to Kaplan-Meier analysis of survival data. In addition, diagnostic and prognostic value of FAP in ccRCC was figured out by ROC curve and prognostic nomogram model. In vitro study revealed that the over-expression FAP accelerated cell proliferation, migration as well as invasion, and suppressed cell apoptosis, but silencing of FAP had the opposite effect. FAP suppression reduced the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway's stimulation, whereas FAP up-regulation increased the stimulation of the pathway. Blocking the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway with the dual PI3K/mTOR inhibitor BEZ235 repressesed cancer-promoting effect of FAP. Additionally, we found that the downregulation of FAP was effective at slowing tumor progression in vivo.
    Conclusion: It is possible that FAP could be a reliable biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of ccRCC because of its role in the ccRCC progression via triggering the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway.
