    Abstract Abstract This study utilizes Cobarrubias’ (1983. Ethical issues in status planning. In: Progress in language planning: international perspectives. pp. 41–85) taxonomy of language ideologies as the framework to uncover the ideologies underlying language policy and planning (LPP) in the Philippines. We discuss the different language ideologies, including linguistic assimilation, vernacularization, linguistic pluralism, and internationalization, through a historical analysis of the mandated LPP in the Philippines and how they have influenced the country’s LPP. Our findings reveal that legislation and administrative measures have played a crucial role in the process of linguistic assimilation, which has historically been the dominant ideology underlying LPP in the Philippines. Furthermore, we highlight that various language ideologies can coexist and be present simultaneously within a language policy or society. We also posit that Cobarrubias’ (1983. Ethical issues in status planning. In: Progress in language planning: international perspectives. pp. 41–85) framework has the potential to aid in the analysis and enhancement of LPP in other countries facing similar linguistic scenarios. Additionally, multilingual and multicultural countries must continually adapt their LPP to emphasize inclusive language policies, language maintenance initiatives, and national identity construction that values and respects linguistic diversity, empowers local communities, and strives for social inclusivity and cohesion within the context of neocolonialism and globalization.

    Abstract The implementation of shape modification (SM) to reinforced concrete (RC) columns has been demonstrated to be effective when enhancing the effectiveness of the fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confinement of the columns, particularly for non-circular columns. The SM approach generally includes modifying a square section into a circular one, modifying a rectangular section into an elliptical/oval one and modifying a square/rectangular section into a curvilinearized square/rectangular section. In this paper, a state-of-the-art review of studies on FRP-confined non-circular columns with SM is conducted. The effects of key parameters on the effectiveness of FRP confinement are discussed, and different methods for the implementation of SM in real applications are briefly introduced. The findings of the review further confirm the effectiveness of the SM approach, and the test results demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of section curvilinearization with a limited increase in cross-sectional area. Additionally, existing theoretical models for FRP-confined concrete in columns with SM are summarized. Further research opportunities associated with FRP-confined non-circular columns with SM are identified.

    Abstract Lake sediments serve as a sink for trace elements and provide a record of watershed changes resulting from anthropogenic activities and natural processes. In this study, eight trace elements in the sediments of Lake Aha, an urban lake in Guiyang City, Southwest China, were investigated to reveal the effects of historical coal mining and rapid urbanization in the watershed. Results showed that the median contents of measured trace elements in order of Zn (220.00 mg/kg) > Ni (98.16 mg/kg) > Cr (70.26 mg/kg) > Cu (66.20 mg/kg) > As (58.14 mg/kg) > Co (41.66 mg/kg) > Pb (28.33 mg/kg) > Cd (1.39 mg/kg). Except for Cr and Pb, the median concentrations of Cd, As, Zn, Ni, Co, and Cu were 4.64, 2.33, 2.00, 1.92, 1.81, and 1.09 times higher than regional natural background values respectively. Trace element contents in sediments of the center of the lake were significantly higher than in the rest of the sediment cores, resulting from relatively stable hydrodynamic processes in the region. Vertical variation of trace elements indicated that the fluctuations in the intensity of coal mining activities in the tributaries were effectively tracked by variations of trace element levels in the middle layer sediments of the Youyu River and Baiyan River estuaries. The elevated concentrations of Pb in the surface sediments of the Jinzhong River estuary reflected the rapid urbanization in the basin over the past 20 years. PMF analysis demonstrated that As, Cd, and Pb in sediments were from a mixture of natural and urban activities, and Cu, Zn, Ni, and Co originated from coal mining. This study provides important information for comprehending the anthropogenic activities of small-scale lakes and historical environmental changes.

    Abstract The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWD) in China is a trans-basin water transfer project for water resource optimization that affects ecosystem services functions along its main transfer line. Exploring the effects of land-use change on ecosystem services in the headwater and receiving areas along the SNWD is conducive to improving the protection of the surrounding ecological environment. However, previous research lacks a comparative analysis of ecosystem services values (ESVs) in these areas. In this study, the land-use dynamic degree index, land-use transfer matrix, and spatial analysis method were used to comparatively analyze the impact of land-use changes on ESVs in the headwater and receiving areas of the SNWD. The results show that cultivated land was the main land use type in the receiving areas and HAER. From 2000 to 2020, CLUDD in the headwater areas was faster than that in the receiving areas. Spatially, in general, the land-use change areas of the receiving areas were larger. During the study period, cultivated land in the headwater areas of the middle route mainly transferred to water areas and forestry areas, while built-up areas mainly occupied cultivated land in the headwater areas of the east route, receiving areas of the middle route, and receiving areas of the east route. From 2000 to 2020, the ESV increased only in the headwater areas of the middle route, while the ESV in the other three sections decreased. The variation extent of ESV in the receiving areas was greater than that in the headwater areas. The results of this study have important policy significance for land use and ecological protection in the headwater and receiving areas of the SNWD in the future.

    Abstract Nature reserves (NRs) are the main components of protected areas and geographic spaces, with unique natural and cultural resources. The establishment of nature reserves has not only strengthened the protection of specific species but has also played a vital role in the protection of ecosystem services (ESs). However, few studies have been conducted to systematically assess the effectiveness of nature reserves from the perspective of ecosystem services supply and demand (S&D) or make comparisons between the conservation effects of different types of nature reserves. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics of ecosystem service supply and demand in 412 Chinese national nature reserves. The results showed that both supply and demand for ecosystem services per unit area show a spatial pattern of increasing from west to east. The supply–demand matching pattern is dominated by high supply–high demand (H–H) and low supply–high demand (L–H) in the central and eastern regions, and high supply–low demand (H–L) and low supply–low demand (L–L) in the northeast, northwest, and southwest regions. The coupling coordination degree (CCD) of ecosystem services supply and demand increased from 0.53 in 2000 to 0.57 in 2020, and the number of NRs reaching the coordinated level (>0.5) increased by 15 from 2000 to 2020, representing 3.64% of the total number of protected areas. Steppe meadows, ocean coasts, forest ecosystems, wildlife, and wild plant types of nature reserves all improved more obviously. This provides a scientific basis for strengthening the ecological and environmental supervision of nature reserves, and the research methods and ideas can provide references for similar research.

    Abstract Previous studies have established a relationship between Chinese L3 English learners' learning strategies, environment, self-efficacy, and motivation. However, limited research has examined these interconnections concerning Chinese L3 learners' phonetic symbol learning (PSL), and it is hard to determine the extent or manner in which the aforementioned factors have an impact on the motivation toward PSL and their interactions among Chinese L3 English learners according to existing related studies. Structural equation modeling (SEM) can be utilized to tackle this question given its advantages in analyzing various factors in language learning motivation based on specific theories. This study, therefore, aims to investigate the direct and indirect effects of learning strategies and learning environment on the motivation towards PSL among Chinese L3 English learners and offer some pedagogical advice to teachers in Chinese L3 English instruction. To achieve this, a PSL Motivation Scale was developed, using data collected from 45 minority college students and analyzed via SEM. The results revealed that learning strategies and learning environment have direct impacts on the motivation towards PSL among Chinese L3 English learners, as well as indirect impacts on motivation through the mediation of self-efficacy. This study may provide a methodological and pedagogical reference for English pronunciation teaching in China and other contexts that we can stimulate students' motivation toward PSL either directly or through the mediating effect of self-efficacy.

    Abstract In this paper, we propose a hyperchaotic image encryption system based on particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) and cellular automata (CA). Firstly, to improve the ability to resist plaintext attacks, the initial conditions of the hyperchaotic system are generated by the hash function value which is closely related to the plaintext image to be encrypted. In addition, the fitness of PSO is the correlation coefficient between adjacent pixels of the image. Moreover, On the basis of hyperchaotic system, cellular automata technology is adopted, which can enhance the randomness of population distribution and increase the complexity and diversity of the population so that the security of the encryption system can be improved and avoid falling into local optimum. The simulation results and security analysis of the proposed encryption system demonstrate that the hyperchaotic image encryption system has high resistance against plaintext attack and statistical attack.

    Abstract The rainwater chemistry and related air contaminants are used to investigate the rainwater ions sources, variations, and influence factors from 2012 to 2014 in Guiyang city (the typical karst urban area of Southwest China). According to temporal rainwater ion concentrations, the obvious variations were presented in the study period, such as Ca2+ (125∼6,652 μeq L−1) and SO42− (11∼4,127 μeq L−1). Consequently, Ca2+, Mg2+, SO42− and Cl− are considered as the leading ions. Three critical influencing factors of rainwater ions concentrations, including sources variations, rainfall amount and long-distance migration (rainfall amount > 100 mm) are identified. Based on the typical ionic ratios, source identification suggested that anthropogenic inputs mainly contributed to F−, NO3− and SO42−, while the dusts (crustal sources) are the primary sources of Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+. Cl− Enrichment in long-distance transport is the main contributor of Cl−. According to the observation of high level of total wet acid deposition, the more detailed spatio-temporal monitoring of rainfall-related acid deposition (particularly sulfur deposition) is required to understand its potential environmental effects in the aquatic ecosystem of the earth surface.
