    Abstract R-loops, intricate three-stranded structures formed by RNA-DNA hybrids and an exposed non-template DNA strand, are fundamental to various biological phenomena. They carry out essential and contrasting functions within cellular mechanisms, underlining their critical role in maintaining cellular homeostasis. The specific cellular context that dictates R-loop formation determines their function, particularly emphasizing the necessity for their meticulous genomic regulation. Notably, the aberrant formation or misregulation of R-loops is implicated in numerous neurological disorders. This review focuses on the complex interactions between R-loops and double-strand DNA breaks, exploring how R-loop dysregulation potentially contributes to the pathogenesis of various brain disorders, which could provide novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underpinning neurological disease progression and identify potential therapeutic targets by highlighting these aspects.

    Abstract Sixteen new species of the genus Ptocasius are described from Mt. Gaoligong, Yunnan: P. angulatus sp. nov. (♀); P. circulus sp. nov. (♀); P. danzhu sp. nov. (♂♀); P. davidi sp. nov. (♀); P. filiformus sp. nov. (♂♀); P. foliolatus sp. nov. (♀); P. geminus sp. nov. (♂♀); P. jietouensis sp. nov. (♂♀); P. longapophysis sp. nov. (♂♀); P. longlingensis sp. nov. (♂♀); P. rectangulus sp. nov. (♀); P. robustus sp. nov. (♀); P. tengchongensis sp. nov. (♂♀); P. umbellulatus sp. nov. (♀); P. zabkai sp. nov. (♂♀) and P. zonatus sp. nov. (♀). Including P. montanus (Żabka, 1981) and P. pseudoflexus (Liu, Yang & Peng, 2016), a total of eighteen species of Ptocasius have been reported from Mt. Gaoligong. For each new species, a morphological description, photos of the body and copulatory organs, line drawings of copulatory organs, and locality maps are provided.

    Abstract BackgroundTo evaluate the efficacy of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs on the systemic inflammatory response (SIR) of patients following gynecological surgery, a randomized controlled trial was performed to compare the ERAS programs with the conventional perioperative care programs. Furthermore, novel SIR markers could be identified to evaluate the ERAS programs of gynecological surgery.MethodsPatients undergoing gynecological surgery were randomly allocated to either the ERAS group or the conventional group. The correlations between the elements of ERAS protocols and SIR markers following gynecological surgery were evaluated.ResultsA total of 340 patients who underwent gynecological surgery were enrolled (ERAS = 170; conventional = 170). First, we identified whether the ERAS programs after gynecological surgery reduced the perioperative difference between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). Interestingly, first flatus time postoperatively, visual analog scale (VAS) score of patients was positively correlated with the perioperative difference NLR or PLR. Moreover, we discovered that the perioperative difference NLR or PLR was correlated with elements of ERAS protocol, including first sips of water, first semifluid diet postoperatively, pelvic drain duration, and out-of-bed time of patients.ConclusionWe originally reveal that certain elements of ERAS programs alleviated SIR to operation. The implementation of ERAS programs enhances postoperative recovery after gynecological surgery via improving system inflammatory status. NLR or PLR could be the novel and inexpensive marker to assess ERAS programs in gynecological surgery.Clinical trial registration:ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier, NCT03629626.

    Abstract As the third largest river basin in the world, the Yangtze River basin in China has vegetation ecosystems in its plain, mountain, and alpine regions. Studying the change characteristics of the vegetation’s net primary productivity (NPP) and its relationship with natural factors and human activities can aid with understanding, to a certain extent, the response of the ecosystem to global climate change. Based on a total of 21 years of MOD17A3 data products from 2000 to 2020, this paper analyzed the spatial variation characteristics and future trends of the NPP in this region by using the coefficient of variation (CV), trend analysis (β), and Hurst index (H) methods. Meanwhile, correlation analysis was used to explore the influence of natural factors and human activities on the NPP. The results show the following: (1) the total amount of the NPP in the Yangtze River Basin was relatively high, and the overall change trend is rising, while the inter-annual fluctuation is evident. The total amount of NPP ranges from 0.786 PgC (2000) to 1.024 PgC (2020), and the annual average was 0.932 PgC. This increase was mainly caused by the increase in the average NPP of forest land, cultivated land, and construction land. (2) The mean value of the NPP in the different regions of the Yangtze River Basin ranged from 0 (construction land) to 1902.89 gC/m 2 ·a. The mean value of the NPP in the Yangtze River Basin was high in the south and low in the north, as well as high in the middle and low in the east and west. The main high-value areas were located in the Hengduan Mountains and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The coefficient of variation (CV) was 0.0009–0.9980, and the mean CV was only 0.1126. Regarding the future development trend, 77.90% and 22.10% of the regions showed an increase, 22.10% showed a decrease, and 75.25% showed an anti-sustainable state. (3) The effect of human activities on the NPP was generally negative, and the loss of NPP due to land use change in 2020 was around 9.85 TgC when compared with the same in 2000. ...
