Abstract Purpose: This study reviews the use of mirabilite in traditional Chinese medicine and various preparations by describing its chemical composition, processing methods, pharmacology, toxicology, and clinical research progress. Methods: The applications and processing methods of mirabilite are searched in traditional and modern Chinese medical writings, and the articles on chemical composition, pharmacological effects, toxicology, and clinical studies of mirabilite and its combinations in PubMed and China Knowledge Network are reviewed, sorted, and analyzed. Results: The main chemical component of mirabilite is sodium sulfate decahydrate (Na2SO4·10H2O), followed by small amounts of sodium chloride, magnesium sulfate, calcium sulfate, and other inorganic salts. This study systematically organizes the history of the medicinal use of mirabilite in China for more than 2,000 years. This mineral has been used by nine Chinese ethnic groups (Han, Dai, Kazakh, Manchu, Mongolian, Tujia, Wei, Yi, and Tibetan) in a large number of prescription preparations. The Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China (2020 edition) records stated that mirabilite can be used for abdominal distension, abdominal pain, constipation, intestinal carbuncle, external treatment of breast carbuncle, hemorrhoids, and other diseases. The traditional processing methods of mirabilite in China include refining, boiling, sautéing, filtration after hot water blistering, and firing. Since the Ming Dynasty, processing by radish has become the mainstream prepared method of mirabilite. Mirabilite can exhibit anti-inflammatory detumescence effects by inhibiting AMS, LPS, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and NO levels and attenuating the upregulation of TNF-α and NF-κB genes. It can promote cell proliferation and wound healing by increasing the production of cytokines TGFβ1 and VEGF-A and gastrointestinal motility by increasing the release of vasoactive intestinal peptide, substance P, and motilin. It can increase the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor and AKT ...

Abstract Abstract Background The most prevalent mutation in ovarian cancer is the TP53 mutation, which impacts the development and prognosis of the disease. We looked at how the TP53 mutation associates the immunophenotype of ovarian cancer and the prognosis of the disease. Methods We investigated the state of TP53 mutations and expression profiles in culturally diverse groups and datasets and developed an immune infiltration predictive model relying on immune-associated genes differently expressed between TP53 WT and TP53 MUT ovarian cancer cases. We aimed to construct an immune infiltration predictive model (IPM) to enhance the prognosis of ovarian cancer and investigate the impact of the IPM on the immunological microenvironment. Results TP53 mutagenesis affected the expression of seventy-seven immune response-associated genes. An IPM was implemented and evaluated on ovarian cancer patients to distinguish individuals with low- and high-IPM subgroups of poor survival. For diagnostic and therapeutic use, a nomogram is thus created. According to pathway enrichment analysis, the pathways of the human immune response and immune function abnormalities were the most associated functions and pathways with the IPM genes. Furthermore, patients in the high-risk group showed low proportions of macrophages M1, activated NK cells, CD8+ T cells, and higher CTLA-4, PD-1, PD-L1, and TIM-3 than patients in the low-risk group. Conclusions The IPM model may identify high-risk patients and integrate other clinical parameters to predict their overall survival, suggesting it is a potential methodology for optimizing ovarian cancer prognosis.

Abstract Based on the high-resolution electromagnetic field intensity observed by the DEMETER satellite, the harmonic electromagnetic radiations in the ionosphere closely above the extra-high voltage and ultra-high voltage power projects in the Chinese power grid have been detected. In the time-frequency spectrograms, these radiations are characterized by parallel spectral lines with spacings of 50, 100, 150, or 600 Hz. The highest frequency can reach approximately 8,850 Hz. The radiations are probably attributed to the nonlinear devices such as converters or geomagnetic disturbance. The harmonic radiations over alternating current-to-direct current (AC-to-DC) substations of power system are generally more diverse and stronger than those over AC-to-AC substations. The measurements on the ground demonstrate that the weak magnetic radiations at several kilohertz with an intensity in the order of nT do exist around substations. A simple physical model is established to understand the characteristics of harmonic radiations propagating from the Earth’s surface to the ionosphere.

Abstract The automatic ship detection method for thermal infrared remote sensing images (TIRSIs) is of great significance due to its broad applicability in maritime security, port management, and target searching, especially at night. Most ship detection algorithms utilize manual features to detect visible image blocks which are accurately cut, and they are limited by illumination, clouds, and atmospheric strong waves in practical applications. In this paper, a complete YOLO-based ship detection method (CYSDM) for TIRSIs under complex backgrounds is proposed. In addition, thermal infrared ship datasets were made using the SDGSAT-1 thermal imaging system. First, in order to avoid the loss of texture characteristics during large-scale deep convolution, the TIRSIs with the resolution of 30 m were up-sampled to 10 m via bicubic interpolation method. Then, complete ships with similar characteristics were selected and marked in the middle of the river, the bay, and the sea. To enrich the datasets, the gray value stretching module was also added. Finally, the improved YOLOv5 s model was used to detect the ship candidate area quickly. To reduce intra-class variation, the 4.23–7.53 aspect ratios of ships were manually selected during labeling, and 8–10.5 μm ship datasets were constructed. Test results show that the precision of the CYSDM is 98.68%, which is 9.07% higher than that of the YOLOv5s algorithm. CYSDM provides an effective reference for large-scale, all-day ship detection.

Abstract Identifying useful taxonomic indicators for classifying Hibiscus syriacus L. (Malvaceae) cultivars can help address challenges in their homonymy and synonymy. Moreover, analyzing which pollen traits possibly lead to their successful fruiting can serve to guide the hybridization and breeding of H. syriacus . For the first time, this study classified 24 cultivars of H. syriacus based on 24 morphological and palynological indicators assessed for flowers, leaves, and pollen grains. These indicators were a mixture of quantitative and qualitative traits, measured to contribute to the identification and classification of H. syriacus cultivars. The results showed that the 24 H. syriacus cultivars could be classified into 2–6 clusters according to different taxonomic criteria. The leading diagnostic indicators were eight quantitative and eight qualitative traits, of which two new quantitative traits—the width of the spine base (SW) and average of the pollen grain radius and spine length (D-spine)—and five new qualitative traits—the amount of pollen surface spines (O-SA), whether the petals have the red center (B-RC), whether the pollen surface ruffles strongly (B-RS), the degree of pollen surface ruffling (O-DR), and relationship between calyx and bract (O-CB)—could be used as defining traits for H. syriacus cultivars owing to their robust contribution to the classification. The correlations between indicators for flowers, leaves, and pollen grains were explored, which revealed that the O-SA in H. syriacus was strongly tied to quantitative pollen traits. Furthermore, three qualitative morphological traits—whether the stamens are heterogeneous in terms of inner petals (B-IP), O-CB, and whether the leaf lobing is strong (B-LL)—were correlated with partial quantitative pollen traits. We also found that those H. syriacus cultivars with micro-spines or granulate on the pollen grain surface have higher fruiting rates; additionally, pollen diameter, spine length, and spine spacing might also be potential factors influencing ...

Abstract Objective To perform a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation on thyroid autoimmunity markers in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT). Methods This meta-analysis included randomized controlled clinical trials identified by a systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed®, MEDLINE®, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure) from inception to August 2020. All studies included patients with HT that received vitamin D supplementation irrespective of the doses administered or the duration of treatment. The primary and secondary outcome measures were thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and/or thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb) titres. Results Eight studies ( n = 652) were included. There was significant heterogeneity between the studies. Using a random-effect model, vitamin D supplementation reduced TPOAb titre (standardized mean difference [SMD]: –1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1–1.92, –0.29) and TGAb titre (SMD: –1.12; 95% CI: –1.96, –0.28). A subgroup analysis demonstrated that vitamin D supplementation for >3 months resulted in a decrease in TPOAb titre (SMD: –1.66, 95% CI: –2.91, –0.41) but treatment ≤3 months was ineffective. Treatment with vitamin D 3 decreased TPOAb titre (SMD: –1.48; 95% CI: –2.53, –0.42) whereas vitamin D did not. Conclusion These data suggest that vitamin D reduces autoantibody titre in patients with HT.

Abstract The efficient development of Economic and Technological Development Zones (ETDZs) across China has been key to the country’s economic transformation. Despite this, few studies have addressed the dynamic characteristics of the efficiency of ETDZs. Taking China’s 115 national ETDZs established before 2010 as the research sample, this study measures the comprehensive operating efficiency of ETDZs and identifies dynamic characteristics of that efficiency throughout the period 2011–2017, using a three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model and the Markov method. This research also explores the relationship between the operation efficiency of ETDZs and urban economic development. The results indicate that the operating efficiency of national ETDZs was generally low, and subject to a downward trend over the study period; the efficiency of ETDZs in the western region was found to be higher than that in the central and eastern areas. It was found that operating efficiency was stable in terms of the types of transfer witnessed, and the results emphasize the difficulty of achieving leapfrog development in a relatively short time. In addition, medium-high coupling coordination was detected in the relationship between urban social and economic development and the operating efficiency of ETDZs. When the operating efficiency of the ETDZ was high, this coupling coordination improved significantly. Finally, most of China’s ETDZs remain in a factor-driven stage in their development, with their expansion occurring at the expense of efficiency. Based on these results, this paper suggests that the government should pay greater attention to the overall efficiency and growth quality in the sustainable development of the country’s ETDZs.

Abstract Abstract Background Bladder cancer is an epidemic and life-threating urologic carcinoma. Anoikis is a unusual type of programmed cell death which plays a vital role in tumor survival, invasion and metastasis. Nevertheless, the relationship between anoikis and bladder cancer has not been understood thoroughly. Methods We downloaded the transcriptome and clinical information of BLCA patients from TCGA and GEO databases. Then, we analyzed different expression of anoikis-related genes and established a prognostic model based on TCGA database by univariate Cox regression, lasso regression, and multivariate Cox regression. Then the Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed. GEO database was used for external validation. BLCA patients in TCGA database were divided into two subgroups by non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) classification. Survival analysis, different gene expression, immune cell infiltration and drug sensitivity were calculated. Finally, we verified the function of S100A7 in two BLCA cell lines. Results We developed a prognostic risk model based on three anoikis-related genes including TPM1, RAC3 and S100A7. The overall survival of BLCA patients in low-risk groups was significantly better than high-risk groups in training sets, test sets and external validation sets. Subsequently, the checkpoint and immune cell infiltration had significant difference between two groups. Then we identified two subtypes (CA and CB) through NMF analysis and found CA had better OS and PFS than CB. Besides, the accuracy of risk model was verified by ROC analysis. Finally, we identified that knocking down S100A7 gene expression restrained the proliferation and invasion of bladder cancer cells. Conclusion We established and validated a bladder cancer prognostic model consisting of three genes, which can effectively evaluate the prognosis of bladder cancer patients. Additionally, through cellular experiments, we demonstrated the significant role of S100A7 in the ...

Abstract Lab safety problems have become an impeding factor that cannot be ignored in normal teaching and scientific research activities at colleges and universities. As the risk factors of lab accidents can be conceptualized as occurring at multiple levels, systematically improving and optimizing lab safety is the crucial route to accident prevention in labs. In this paper, a novel method that integrates a structural equation model (SEM) and system dynamics (SD) is presented to dynamically assess lab safety with the characteristics of insufficient data and uncertainty. On the basis of a questionnaire investigation, the SEM was utilized to determine the influencing factors on lab safety and acquire the path coefficients among these factors, which were embedded into the SD model as the weight of the influencing factors. An illustration was carried out to test and validate the proposed method, and a sensitivity analysis was also conducted to recognize variables contributing the most to the improvement of lab safety. The results demonstrated that the safety input of human and management subsystems is the most effective to improve the lab safety; meanwhile, “safety awareness”, “emergency ability”, “operation skills”, “safety culture” and “safety training” are the top five contributing factors, which can promote lab safety in the shortest time.
