    Abstract In this study, we reported PVA nanocomposite films enhanced by polyethyleneimine (PEI)-lignin contained cellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) via the solvent casting method. An easy and available method was preformed to prepare LCNFs using a supermasscolloider from unbleached bamboo waste after a mild alkaline pretreatment. The results demonstrate that LCNF–PEI can greatly improve mechanical, hydrophobic, anti-UV shielding and antibacterial properties of the composite films. The tensile strength of LPP1 film was improved to 54.56 MPa, which was higher than 39.37 MPa of PVA film. The water contact angle of films increased from 35° to 104° with an increase in LCNF content from 0 to 6 wt%. Meanwhile, the nanocomposite film demonstrated the effect of full shielding against ultraviolet light when the amount of LCNF–PEI reached 6 wt%. The addition of LCNF–PEI endowed excellent antibacterial activity (against S. aureus and E. coli ), which indicated potential applications in the packaging field.

    Abstract To improve on the poor strength and flame retardancy of a chitosan (CS)-based functional film, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was taken as the reinforced material and both ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and branched polyethyleneimine (BPEI) as the flame-retardant additives in the CS matrix to prepare the CS/CNF/APP/BPEI composite film by simple drying. The resulting composite film showed good mechanical strength, with a tensile strength reaching 71.84 Mpa due to the high flexibility of CNF and the combination of CS, CNF and BPEI through strong hydrogen bonding interactions. The flame retardant-performance of the composite film greatly enhanced the limit oxygen index (LOI), up to 32.7% from 27.6% for the pure film, and the PHRR intensity decreased to 28.87 W/g from 39.38% in the micro-scale combustion calorimetry (MCC) test due to the ability of BPEI to stimulate the decomposition of APP, releasing non-flammable gases such as CO 2 , N 2 , NH 3 , etc., and forming a protective phosphating layer to block the entry of O 2 . Based on the good flame retardancy, mechanical strength and transparency, the CS/CNF/APP/BPEI composite film has a great potential for future applications.

    Abstract In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) obtained by the acid hydrolysis of waste bamboo powder were used to synthesize cellulose nanocrystal-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (CNC-g-P(AA/AM)) aerogels via graft copolymerization followed by freeze-drying. The structure and morphology of the resulting aerogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the CNC-g-P(AA/AM) aerogels exhibited excellent absorbent properties and adsorption capacities. Subsequent Pb(II) adsorption studies showed that the kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order equation, while the adsorption isotherms were best described using the Langmuir model. The maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model reached up to 366.3 mg/g, which is a capacity that outperformed that of the pure CNC aerogel. The CNC-g-P (AA/AM) aerogels become structurally stable through chemical cross-linking, which enabled them to be easily regenerated in HCl solution and retain the adsorption capacity after repeated use. The aerogels were found to maintain 81.3% removal efficiency after five consecutive adsorption−desorption cycles. Therefore, this study demonstrated an effective method for the fabrication of an aerogel adsorbent with an excellent reusability in the effective removal of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

    Abstract Rationale: The causal relationship between anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease and immunoglobulin A (IgA) nephropathy is still unclear and cases of concurrent anti-GBM disease and IgA nephropathy are very rare, especially with a good prognosis and long-term follow-up. Here, we report a case of concurrent anti-GBM disease and IgA nephropathy. By using corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide in combination with plasmapheresis, the patient achieved a very good prognosis with complete normalization of renal function and complete disappearance of hematuria and proteinuria at the subsequent follow-up. To our knowledge, no previous case with such a long follow-up and such a good prognosis have been reported.
    Patient concerns: This case report describes a 26-year-old Chinese woman who presented with fever as the initial symptom, followed by dysmorphic hematuria, overt proteinuria and rapidly worsening renal function. Before admission, the patient received symptomatic supportive treatment such as intravenous albumin infusion, improvement of circulation, but the symptoms were not significantly improved.
    Diagnosis: Per the results of kidney biopsy, the patient was diagnosed with crescentic glomerulonephritis and anti-GBM disease with IgA nephropathy.
    Interventions: The key to obtain a good prognosis was the early application of corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide in combination with plasmapheresis to make the anti-GBM antibody turn negative quickly.
    Outcomes: After 2 weeks of therapy, the patients' anti-GBM antibody turned negative and serum creatinine improved to a normal range. After 10 months, the patient's proteinuria level reached complete remission. After 12 months, the patient's hematuria had disappeared completely.
    Lessons: This case provides experience in the treatment of concurrent anti-GBM disease and IgA nephropathy and highlights the importance of early application of plasmapheresis and immunosuppressive therapy to obtain a good prognosis.

    Abstract Monolithic cellulose nanofibrils (CNF)-silica composite aerogels were successfully prepared by immersing CNF aerogels into a silica solution in a two-step sol-gel process (initial hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) followed by condensation of silica particles). Aerogels were characterized by SEM, BET surface area test, bulk density and silica content analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and compression test. The form of SiO2 existing in the composite aerogel was the spherical individual particles coated on CNF fibrils. The pH value of condensation solution was found to have great influence on the properties of the composite aerogels. By varying the pH value of condensation atmosphere from 8 to 12, the bulk densities of composite aerogels were able to be linearly increased from 0.059gcm−3 to 0.29gcm−3,and the silica content in the matrix sharply jumped from 3wt% to 79wt%. The porosities of the aerogels remained very high, between 85 and 96%, and the surface area of the composite aerogel reached up to 700.1m2g−1. The compression properties of the composite aerogel improved greatly compared with those of the silica aerogel, about 8–30 times higher. Moreover, the compressive strength of the composite aerogel prepared in this work greatly exceeded the conventional insulation materials found in the recent commercial market, and without substantial increases in thermal conductivity. Hence, the findings of this research offer a promising application for composite aerogels and give a theoretical basis for developing new advanced materials.

    Abstract Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response to infection. Sepsis, which can lead to severe sepsis, septic shock, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, is an important cause of mortality. Pathogenesis is extremely complex. In recent years, cell hypoxia caused by mitochondrial dysfunction has become a hot research field. Sepsis damages the structure and function of mitochondria, conversely, mitochondrial dysfunction aggravated sepsis. The treatment of sepsis lacks effective specific drugs. The aim of this paper is to undertake a narrative review of the current experimental treatment for mitochondrial dysfunction in sepsis. The search was conducted in PubMed databases and Web of Science databases from 1950 to January 2014. A total of 1,090 references were retrieved by the search, of which 121 researches met all the inclusion criteria were included. Articles on the relationship between sepsis and mitochondria, and drugs used for mitochondrial dysfunction in sepsis were reviewed retrospectively. The drugs were divided into four categories: (1) Drug related to mitochondrial matrix and respiratory chain, (2) drugs of mitochondrial antioxidant and free radical scavengers, (3) drugs related to mitochondrial membrane stability, (4) hormone therapy for septic mitochondria. In animal experiments, many drugs show good results. However, clinical research lacks. In future studies, the urgent need is to develop promising drugs in clinical trials.
