Abstract The effective control of air pollution to advance human health and improve well-being has risen to the forefront of discussion in recent years. Based on China’s 2019 environmental protection tax data and China Social Survey (CSS) data, this paper studies the effects of subjective air pollution and the environmental protection tax on residents’ well-being using an econometric mediation effect model. The research conclusions are as follows: (1) Subjective air pollution can significantly reduce residents’ well-being, (2) an environmental protection tax can significantly improve residents’ well-being and it can eliminate some of the negative influence of subjective air pollution on residents’ well-being, and (3) the grouping test of residents’ income, regional distribution, urban and rural structure, age structure, gender structure, and other variables shows that the effects of subjective air pollution on residents’ well-being are heterogeneous among different populations. After further endogeneity testing with the instrumental variables method, adjusting the primary variables, and altering the research procedures, the results are still robust. Based on these findings, we should vigorously promote the development of ecological civilization and good air quality and support reforming the environmental protection tax system to enhance well-being. It is also necessary to shift from a crude development model to a green industry and business model. While emphasizing social equity and production efficiency, we should ensure the synchronous development of cities and villages. Additionally, tangible steps should be implemented to raise people’s incomes, expand young people’s work options, and enhance their satisfaction. The article focuses on the impact of subjective air pollution on residents’ well-being, adding air pollution to the factors affecting well-being. Furthermore, the article finds that the environmental protection tax has two advantages: it can govern air pollution and promote green development, and, at the same ...

Abstract With the rapid development of digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data and cloud computing, China’s agricultural production is entering a new era characterized by digitalization. Based on provincial panel data of China from 2013 to 2020, this paper adopts the system GMM and mediating effects model to systematically examine the impact of digitalization on low-carbon agricultural production from the perspective of resource misallocation. The results indicate that digitalization can significantly curb agricultural carbon emissions and thus promote low-carbon agricultural production, and this finding still holds after the robustness test. The heterogeneity analysis indicates that the inhibiting effect of digitalization on agricultural carbon emissions is most pronounced in the eastern region relative to the central and western regions (the regression coefficients are −0.400 and −0.126 respectively). Further mechanism analysis suggests that digitalization can reduce agricultural carbon emissions by correcting the widespread capital and labor misallocation in agricultural factor markets. The findings of this study provide significant policy implications for low-carbon agricultural production in China.

Abstract The integrated development of agriculture and tourism is conducive to the realization of agricultural ecological value, which will promote the green development of agriculture and improve the green total factor productivity of agriculture as well. Based on panel data in China from 2008 to 2019, the super-efficiency SBM method and the coupling coordination degree model were used to estimate the agricultural green total factor productivity (AGTFP) and the integration level of agriculture and tourism (ATL). The dynamic spatial Durbin model and threshold effect model were used to demonstrate the effects and characteristics of the agriculture and tourism integration on AGTFP. Results showed that: 1) During the study period, AGTFP and ATL increased steadily, and showed obvious spatial agglomeration characteristics; 2) The integration of agriculture and tourism will directly promote the improvement of AGTFP in the local region, and this impact has a spatial spillover effect. The direct effect in the central region in China is the strongest, and the spillover effect in the eastern region is the largest. 3) The influence of the agriculture and tourism integration on AGTFP was enhanced with the improvement of ATL, showing a threshold characteristic. From the perspective of subregion, the threshold value of ATL in the eastern region is the lowest, while the threshold value in the western region is the highest. The results of this study provide useful enlightenment for promoting the deep integration of agriculture and tourism and improvement of AGTFP so as to promote the green development of agriculture.

Abstract Ozone (O3) pollution in the atmosphere is getting worse in many cities. In order to improve the accuracy of O3 prediction and obtain the spatial distribution of O3 concentration over a continuous period of time, this paper proposes a VAR-XGBoost model based on Vector autoregression (VAR), Kriging method and XGBoost (Extreme Gradient Boosting). China is used as an example and its spatial distribution of O3 is simulated. In this paper, the O3 concentration data of the monitoring sites in China are obtained, and then a spatial prediction method of O3 mass concentration based on the VAR-XGBoost model is established, and finnally its influencing factors are analyzed. This paper concludes that O3 features the highest correlation with PM2.5 and the lowest correlation with SO2. Among the measurement factors, wind speed and temperature are the most important factors affecting O3 pollution, which are positively correlated to O3 pollution. In addition, precipitation is negatively correlated with 8-hour ozone concentration. In this paper, the performance of the VAR-XGBoost model is evaluated based on the ten-fold cross-validation method of sample, site and time, and a comparison with the results of XGBoost, CatBoost (categorical boosting), ExtraTrees, GBDT (gradient boosting decision tree), AdaBoost (adaptive boosting), RF (random forest), Decision tree, and LightGBM (light gradient boosting machine) models is conducted. The result shows that the prediction accuracy of the VAR-XGBoost model is better than other models. The seasonal and annual average R2 reaches 0.94 (spring), 0.93 (summer), 0.92 (autumn), 0.93 (winter), and 0.95 (average from 2016 to 2021). The data show that the applicability of the VAR-XGBoost model in simulating the spatial distribution of O3 concentrations in China performs well. The spatial distribution of O3 concentrations in the Chinese region shows an obvious feature of high in the east and low in the west, and the spatial distribution is strongly influenced by topographical factors. The mean ...

Abstract 【Objective】The spatial variability and scale effect of soil available nitrogen content in maize propagation base were investigated, and reasonable sampling interval was determined to provide a theoretical basis for accurate soil sampling design.【Method】Taking the perennial southern maize propagation plot as the test plot, soil samples were collected at 10 m sampling interval with original scale, and sampled successively at 20, 30 and 40 m to form different sampling interval data sets. Spatial autocorrelation Moran index, semi-variogram and fractal dimension were used to analyze the spatial structure changes of soil available nitrogen content under different sampling interval conditions.【Result】The average content of soil available nitrogen in the test site was 90.24 mg/kg, belonging to the medium level, and the coefficient of variation was 19.77%, belonging to the medium range of variation. At the sampling intervals of 10, 20, 30 and 40 m, the data structure of soil available nitrogen samples did not change notably, only the coefficient of variation was different greatly. The coefficient of variation at the sampling interval of 20 m was the largest 29.37 %, while that at the other sampling intervals was little different. With the increase of sampling interval, the spatial autocorrelation Moran index of soil available nitrogen content decreased and its spatial aggregation became weaker, while the nugget value, block base ratio and fractal dimension showed an increasing trend, indicating that the spatial variation caused by random factors gradually increased, while the spatial variation caused by random factors gradually weakened the spatial variation caused by structural factors, making the spatial correlation gradually weakened. The spatial distribution of soil available nitrogen content with a 20 m sampling interval was consistent with the original scale of a 10 m sampling interval, and the root mean square error value of spatial prediction was the smallest, indicating that the spatial prediction accuracy was ...

Abstract Smart grid provides convenience for power generation, consumption and distribution. Authenticated key exchange (AKE) is a fundamental technique to protect data transmission from interception and tampering in smart grid. However, since the smart meters only have limited resources in computation and communication, most of the existing AKE schemes are inefficient for smart grid. First, many schemes have to use large security parameters to compensate the loose reduction in their security proofs. Second, most of these schemes require at least three-round of communication to negotiate a secret session key with explicit key confirmation. To alleviate these issues, we propose a novel two-round AKE scheme with tight security for smart grid. Our proposed scheme integrates Diffie-Hellman key exchange and a tightly secure digital signature, in which not only mutual authentication can be realized but also the communicating parties can confirm that session keys are negotiated between them explicitly. Compared with the existing AKE schemes, the overheads in both communication and computation are lighter in our proposed scheme, because fewer rounds of communication are required and smaller security parameters can be used to achieve the same security level. Therefore, our scheme contributes to a more practical solution for secure key establishment in smart grid.

Abstract Despite the existing extensive research on stance markers such as hedges, boosters, and self-mention in academic writing, few studies, however, examined the co-occurrence of these stance markers to help authors project their identities in writing. In this study, we examine how self-mention with boosters and hedges are used by writers of different groups to manifest authorial presence and what functions they realize in research writing. Two self-compiled corpora were constructed to compare the discursive practice between Chinese PhD students and journal article writers from four disciplines in hard applied and hard pure science. In general, student writers use fewer self-mention with boosters but more self-mention with hedges than expert writers. An examination of the rhetorical functions of these devices shows that both expert and student writers employ most self-mention with boosters for presenting research findings, but students are more inclined to invest self-mention with boosters than expert writers when describing research procedures or elaborating arguments. Meanwhile, self-mention with hedges are mostly used for elaborating arguments, but compared with expert writers, students seem to overly obscure their presence in this function.

Abstract Background. The metabolic characteristics of body fluids of excellent water polo players before and after competition have not been reported. The purpose of the study was to compare the metabolites in the urine of water polo players before and after competition by 1H-NMR-based metabolomic approach. Methods. Twenty-six young water polo players participated in the study voluntarily. The urine and blood samples of players were collected one week before competition (A), immediately after competition (B), and one week after competition (C). Metabolomic analysis was conducted on the urine samples. Urine routine items and biochemical indicators in blood samples were detected. Results. Metabolomic results showed that the contents of eleven metabolites including lactic acid, acetoacetate, and succinic acid in the urine of the subjects increased and four metabolites such as dimethylamine, choline, and glucose decreased at stage B. Most metabolites at stage C had basically returned to the levels at stage A. Pyruvate metabolism, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, synthesis, and degradation of ketone bodies were mainly involved in the above process. Urine conventional analysis results showed that the urine pH decreased dramatically and the levels of PRO and URO significantly increased at stage B, and the three indicators had similar values between stages A and C. The other indicators did not have obvious difference among the three stages. Analysis of blood biochemical indicators showed that the levels of LDH, BUN, CK, and AST significantly increased at stage B and did not show an obvious difference between stages A and C. The results are helpful for coaches to arrange the athletes’ diet reasonably and to conduct scientific training for athletes.

Abstract Vertical integration is conducive to the realization of complementary interests and sustainable development of pig industry. The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in 2018 has disrupted many activities along pig industry chain in China. The production capacity of breeding pigs has dropped rapidly, and the supply of pig is tight. The vertical integration of pig industry chain is the main driving force to ensure food supply. Based on the data of 12 listed pig companies from 2012 to 2019, we examine the ways and reasons for vertical integration of pig companies when external shocks increase by taking ASF as an example, breakpoint regression and Tobit model are used to analyze differences and determinants of the forward and backward integration of pig industry chain under ASF. The empirical results showed that the forward integration of the feed processing link and slaughter circulation link is higher than the backward integration. ASF had different effects on the vertical integration degree of each link. ASF promoted forward integration. The main factors have different influences on the vertical integration of pig industry in China. Forward integration increased mainly depending on previous asset specificity, legal system environment, market demand, and transaction frequency. The findings of the study imply that pig industry chain is taking the forward integration to cope with the ASF shock. The combination of feed link and breeding link reduces feed cost and ensures pig supply. Pig companies tend to reduce transaction costs by strengthening the control of downstream supply.
