Abstract Objective. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between acute mastitis and the constitution of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the potential risk factors of acute mastitis in Chinese breastfeeding mothers. Method. A retrospective study on infant feeding practices was conducted in the Breast Surgery Department of Longhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine between February 2017 and March 2018. A total of 184 women with acute mastitis and 201 women without mastitis of childbearing age were included in this study. All participants filled a baseline questionnaire on demographic characteristics, previous deliveries, and mastitis history and other possible risk factors; data were collected by face-to-face interview. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to ascertain pertinent risk factors affecting the incidence of acute mastitis. The biased constitution of TCM of participants was identified through questionnaires surveyed with the TCM constitution table (ZYYXH/T157-2009). The relationship between acute mastitis and the constitution of TCM was assessed. Results. The protective factors included regular nipple cleansing and cesarean section. The risk factors were nipple infection, Primipara, improper diet, emotional stimuli, postpartum colostrum overdue for more than 72 h, breastfeeding more than 7 times each day, and late primiparity age. Forty-five percent of acute mastitis occurred within 8 weeks after postpartum, and the most common biased constitution of TCM at this period was Qi-Deficiency Constitution (QDC) and Qi-Stagnation Constitution (QSC). Another peak was 25–48 weeks after delivery, accounting for 18%, and the most common biased constitution of TCM was QSC and QDC. More participants were or were prone to be classified as Balanced Constitution (BC) in the control group than the case group (88.5% vs 29.6%), while QDC was the most common constitution of TCM in the case group. The logistic regression analysis further proved that BC was the protective factor of acute mastitis while QDC was a risk factor. Conclusions. The protective factors of acute mastitis were regular nipple cleansing and cesarean section. The risk factor was nipple infection. Among all the constitutions of TCM, BC was a protective factor, while QDC was a risk factor. For all breastfeeding mothers with various constitutions of TCM, regular nipple cleansing and breast vacuuming, a healthy lifestyle, and a positive mental state can keep mastitis away.

Abstract The severity of engine emissions for the environment and human health cannot be ignored. This article optimizes the combustion and emission of gasoline-cassava bioethanol fuel blends in electronic fuel injection engines using response surface methodology to achieve the goal of reducing carbon and pollutant emissions. The experiment investigated the effects of different gasoline-cassava bioethanol mixing ratios (G100, G90E10, G80E20, and G70E30) on engine performance, including torque, brake specific fuel consumption, power, total hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide emissions. The results show that the gasoline-cassava bioethanol fuel blend is not as good as G100 in terms of braking power, torque, and brake specific fuel consumption, but better than G100 in terms of carbon monoxide emissions and total hydrocarbon emissions. Then, the optimization objective function was determined, and the combustion and emission characteristics were optimized using the response surface methodology method. The optimization results indicate that the response surface methodology method can determine the interaction between design variables such as brake specific fuel consumption, nitrogen oxides, and total hydrocarbon emissions and find the best solution. In this experiment, the independent variables of the best solution were 72.9 N·m torque, 30% G70E30 mixing rate, and 2000 rpm speed, corresponding to brake specific fuel consumption at 313 g/(kW·h), nitrogen oxide emissions at 2.85 × 10 3 ppm, and total hydrocarbon emissions at 166 ppm. The findings of this study indicate that by optimizing the gasoline-cassava bioethanol mixture ratio, lower emission levels can be achieved in electronic fuel injection engines, thereby promoting the sustainable development of renewable energy and reducing pollutant emissions.

Abstract Objective To explore the association between the controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score and disease activity in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Methods This retrospective study enrolled patients with UC. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were collected and compared. The CONUT score was obtained for each patient. The association between the CONUT score and laboratory parameters was analysed and the ability of the score to assess disease activity was evaluated. Results A total of 182 patients with UC were enrolled. Patients with active disease showed significantly increased inflammatory biomarkers and decreased nutritional biomarkers compared with patients in remission. Malnourished individuals had significantly elevated inflammatory biomarkers and significantly reduced haemoglobin, prealbumin and retinol-binding protein. The CONUT score was inversely correlated with haemoglobin, prealbumin, retinol-binding protein and was positively correlated with faecal calprotectin, C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.655 (95% confidence interval, 0.557–0.752). The optimal cut-off value was 1.5 points, with a sensitivity of 75.7% and a specificity of 50.0%. Conclusion The CONUT score may evaluate the inflammatory response and nutritional status of UC patients, so it could be a potential biomarker to assess disease activity in UC.

Abstract Abstract Observational studies suggest certain sleep traits are associated with telomere length, but the causal nature of these associations is unclear. The study aimed to determine the causal associations between 11 sleep-related traits and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) through two-sample Mendelian randomization and colocalization analyses using the summary statistics from large-scale genome-wide association studies. Univariable Mendelian randomization indicates that genetically determined short sleep is associated with decreased LTL, while morning chronotype is associated with increased LTL. Multivariable Mendelian randomization further supports the findings and colocalization analysis identifies shared common genetic variants for these two associations. No genetic evidence is observed for associations between other sleep-related traits and LTL. Sensitivity MR methods, reverse MR and re-running MR after removing potential pleiotropic genetic variants enhance the robustness of the results. These findings indicate that prioritizing morning chronotype and avoiding short sleep is beneficial for attenuating telomere attrition. Consequently, addressing sleep duration and chronotype could serve as practical intervention strategies.

Abstract A practical method to synthesize N-heteroaryl esters from N-heteroaryl methanols with acyl cyanides via C–C bond cleavage without using any transition metal is demonstrated here. The use of Na2CO3/15-crown-5 couple enables access to a series of N-heteroaryl esters in high efficiency. This protocol is operationally simple and highly environmentally benign producing only cyanides as byproducts.

Abstract Objective. Baicalin is an active compound found in many natural herbs and has been used to treat intestinal disorders such as diarrhea and colon cancer. In this study, we used a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model to investigate baicalin’s mechanisms in the treatment of colitis. Methods. 3% DSS was administered through the drinking supply for 7 days to induce colitis followed by the administration of 5-aminosalicylic acid and baicalin at three different doses (25, 50, and 100 mg/kg, W/W) for an additional 7 days. Body weight, stool consistency, and colon length were recorded. Colon tissue was stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) to be used for histopathological scoring. Cytokine levels of the colon tissue and serum were evaluated using real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), respectively. mRNA expression and protein levels of tight junctions (TJs) were detected with qRT-PCR and Western blotting. Goblet cells and the mucosal layer of the colon were visualized by Alcian Blue/periodic acid-Schiff (AB/PAS) staining. Mucin 2 (MUC2) was evaluated in both mRNA expression and protein levels. Nod-like receptor pyrin domain-containing protein 6 (NLRP6) inflammasomes were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. Results. Treatment with baicalin significantly relieved colitis as evidenced by reversing both weight loss and colon length shortening. In addition, baicalin inhibited inflammation by reducing proinflammatory cytokines and protected the intestinal barrier by upregulating tight junction proteins. Moreover, goblet cell count and intestinal mucosa thickness were both significantly increased after baicalin treatment. Giving baicalin could upregulate the expression of NLRP6 and interleukin (IL-18) both in mRNA and protein. Conclusion. Baicalin ameliorates DSS-induced colitis by protecting goblet cells through activating NLRP6 inflammasomes.

Abstract Effective, economical and feasible remediation technology of heavy metal pollution in farmland is an important research concentration in the field of farmland soil remediation. In order to investigate the remediation effects of formula fertilizer and biochar on cadmium (Cd)–plumbum (Pb) contaminated farmland, blank (CK), lime (SH), biochar (SWT), formula fertilizer (FL), and biochar + formula fertilizer (FS) were set up in Cd–Pb contaminated farmland. The results demonstrated the following: (1) Compared with CK, SWT and FS increased the yield by 11.21% and 15.00%, respectively, which was significantly higher than other treatments. (2) The concentrations of Cd and Pb in maize kernels under all treatments were lower than the limited value stipulated by GB 2762-2022 in China. Compared with CK, FS reduced the concentration of Cd and Pb in maize kernels by 24.96% and 31.46%, respectively, which were the most significant. All the treatments can reduce the concentrations of Cd and Pb in maize cob and straw and inhibit the transfer of Cd and Pb from the lower part of the maize field to the overground part. (3) FL, SWT, and FS increased soil pH by 0.17, 0.10, and 0.19 units, respectively. FS can reduce the concentrations of available cadmium (DTPA-Cd) and available lead (DTPA-Pb) significantly, which are 31.05% and 38.57% lower than CK, respectively. (4) Each treatment can reduce the extraction state and reducible state of weak acid Cd and Pb in soil, while increasing the proportion of oxidizable state and residual state. FL and FS significantly increased the percentage of residual Cd and Pb by 18.00% and 24.32%, respectively, and 33.33% and 37.76%, respectively. (5) FL (1.747) and FS (1.679) were relatively higher than CK in input/output. In conclusion, the combined application of biochar and formula fertilizer in Cd/Pb polluted farmland can effectively reduce the concentration of Cd and Pb in maize and has high economic benefits and practicability.

Abstract The accumulation of heavy metals in rice is bound to affect human health and safety. In order to ensure food security, this study explores the effect of leaf surface regulation of zinc (Zn) fertilizer on the safety of rice in cadmium (Cd)-plumbum (Pb) polluted farmland. Through field experiments, the leaf surface control treatment of zinc fertilizer was set up, and the effects of leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer on rice yield, Cd and Pb concentration in different parts and zinc, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration in brown rice were studied in the growing period of rice. The results showed as follows: (1) Spraying twice or more in the growth stage of rice could increase the yield by 6.77–7.29% compared with the blank, which was significantly higher than that of single spraying in a certain growth stage. (2) After spraying zinc fertilizer on the leaf surface, Cd and Pb concentration in brown rice decreased by 29.52–56.01% and 11.10–28.34%, respectively, compared with CK. Two or more times of spraying can make Cd concentration in brown rice meet the Chinese standard GB 2762-2022, and one time of spraying can make Pb concentration in brown rice meet the standard. (3) Leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer could reduce the Cd enrichment ability of rice plant parts, and the Cd enrichment coefficient of brown rice was significantly reduced by 28.18–55.02%. Leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer can reduce Cd and Pb concentration in brown rice by reducing the transport ability of heavy metal Cd and Pb in rice roots to straw and then to brown rice. (4) The zinc concentration in brown rice was 18.16–20.68 mg·kg −1 , which was 18.21–34.64% higher than that in CK, and the zinc enrichment effect was the most significant after spraying three times. Meanwhile, the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration in brown rice also increased with the increase of spraying times. By comprehensive analysis, the leaf surface control of zinc fertilizer can reduce the Cd and Pb concentration in rice, and the Cd ...

Abstract In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established and verified on the basis of experimental results, and then the effect of hydrogenation addition on combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel–hydrogen dual-fuel engine fueled with hydrogenation addition (0%, 5%, and 10%) under different hydrogenation energy shares (HESs) and compression ratios (CRs) were investigated using CONVERGE3.0 software. And, this work assumed that the hydrogen and air were premixed uniformly. The correctness of the simulation model was verified by experimental data. The values of HES are in the range of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. And, the values of CR are in the range of 14, 16, 18, and 20. The results of this study showed that the addition of hydrogen to diesel fuel has a significant effect on the combustion characteristics and the emission characteristics of diesel engines. When the HES was 15%, the in-cylinder pressure increased by 10.54%. The in-cylinder temperature increased by 15.11%. When the CR was 20, the in-cylinder pressure and the in-cylinder temperature increased by 66.10% and 13.09%, respectively. In all cases, HC, CO, CO 2 , and soot emissions decreased as the HES increased. But, NO x emission increased.

Abstract Background. Astragali Radix-Curcumae Rhizoma (ARCR), a classic drug pair, has been widely used for the treatment of gastric intraepithelial neoplasia (GIN) in China. However, the underlying mechanisms of this drug pair are still unknown. Thus, elucidating the molecular mechanism of ARCR for treating GIN is imperative. Methods. The active components and targets of ARCR were determined from the TCMSP database, and the differentially expressed genes related to GIN were identified from the GSE130823 dataset. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and ARCR-active component-target-pathway network were constructed by STRING 11.0 and Cytoscape 3.7.2, respectively. In addition, a receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was conducted to verify the key targets, and enrichment analyses were performed using R software. Molecular docking was carried out to test the binding capacity between core active components and key targets. Results. 31 active components were obtained from ARCR, among which 22 were hit by the 51 targets associated with GIN. Gene Ontology (GO) functional enrichment analysis showed that biological process (BP), molecular function (MF), and cellular component (CC) were most significantly enriched in response to a drug, catecholamine binding, and apical part of the cell, respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis indicated ARCR against GIN through regulation of neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, nitrogen metabolism, calcium signaling pathway, chemical carcinogenesis-receptor activation, drug metabolism, gap junction, and cancers. In the PPI network, 15 potential targets were identified, of which nine key targets were proven to have higher diagnostic values in ROC. Molecular docking revealed a good binding affinity of active components (quercetin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and kaempferol) with the corresponding targets (CYP3A4, CYP1A1, HMOX1, DRD2, DPP4, ADRA2A, ADRA2C, NR1I2, and LGALS4). Conclusion. This study revealed the active components and molecular ...
