Abstract We study noise amplification by asymmetric dyads in freely expanding non-Hermitian optical systems. We show that modifications of the pumping strengths can counteract bias from natural imperfections of the system's hardware while couplings between dyads lead to systems with nonuniform statistical distributions. Our results suggest that asymmetric non-Hermitian dyads are promising candidates for efficient sensors and ultrafast random number generators. We propose that the integrated light emission from such asymmetric dyads can be efficiently used for analog all-optical degenerative diffusion models of machine learning to overcome the digital limitations of such models in processing speed and energy consumption.

Abstract Rapid bioanalysis is beneficial to many applications. However, how 'rapid' a method is, or could be, is often an unanswered question. In this statistical review, the authors have assessed multiple pre-analytical (i.e. sample preparation), and analytical method parameters specifically for liquid chromatography to assist researchers in developing and validating 'rapid' bioanalytical methods. We restricted the search to urine and plasma matrices only. Data were extracted from over 2,000 recent studies and evaluated to assess how these parameters affected the 'on-instrument' analysis time. In addition to methods using ultra-violet (UV) detection, there were a large number of mass spectrometric (MS) methods, allowing additional review of the differences between high- and low-resolution MS on analysis time. We observed that most (N = 922, 70 %) methods used 5 or 10 cm columns, and that whilst uptake of ultra-high performance (U)HPLC columns was good, the use of sub-5 cm columns and/or flow rates in excess of 1 mL/min was incredibly rare (N = 25, 3 %). The detector of choice for quantitative (U)HPLC-MS remains the triple quadrupole, although a number of groups report the use of high-resolution MS for such methods.

Abstract The limited regenerative capacity of the human body, in conjunction with a shortage of healthy autologous tissue, has created an urgent need for alternative grafting materials. A potential solution is a tissue-engineered graft, a construct which supports and integrates with host tissue. One of the key challenges in fabricating a tissue-engineered graft is achieving mechanical compatibility with the graft site; a disparity in these properties can shape the behaviour of the surrounding native tissue, contributing to the likelihood of graft failure. The purpose of this review is to examine the means by which researchers have altered the mechanical properties of tissue-engineered constructs via hybrid material usage, multi-layer scaffold designs, and surface modifications. A subset of these studies which has investigated the function of their constructs in vivo is also presented, followed by an examination of various tissue-engineered designs which have been clinically translated.

Abstract Dogs are able to cooperate in reciprocal exchange with humans but little is known about the extent of these abilities (Range & Virányi, 2015). In the Still Face paradigm, infants reply to a sudden nonreciprocal facial expression with gaze aversion and an increase in re-engagement and distress behaviors (E. Tronick et al., 1978). We directly adapted this method; the dog's owner talked to the dog, then abruptly switched to a still, neutral face, maintaining eye contact. In Study 1 (

Abstract Background: Ensuring compliance with privacy law is not just a matter of respecting patient confidentiality. The past year has seen the introduction of new legal requirements including data breach notification, and higher penalties for breaches of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cwlth). Disturbingly, the first reporting period shows that the health sector has the highest number of data breaches of any sector.
Objective: This article outlines the key steps a health practice can take towards managing its privacy compliance.
Discussion: The absence of a privacy compliance program can itself be a breach of the Privacy Act, even if no personal information was lost or misused in any way. Health service providers need to place a fresh focus on their legal compliance.
