    Abstract This book provides a unique and intriguing insight into current debates concerning the relationship between nation and state as well as the political management of international image in today's Europe through an examination of debates on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest. Europe is a contested construct and its boundaries are subject to redefinition. This work aims to advance critical thinking about contemporary nation branding and its relationship to, and influence on, nation building. In particular it focusses on key identity debates that the Eurovision Song Contest engendered in Estonia in the run-up to EU accession. The Eurovision Song Contest is an event which is often dismissed as musically and culturally inferior. However, this work demonstrates that it has the capacity to shed light on key identity debates and illuminate wider socio-political issues. Using a series of in-depth interviews with political elites, media professionals and opinion leaders, this book is a valuable contribution to the growing field of research on nation branding and the Eurovision Song Contest

    Abstract Given a squared Euclidean norm penalty, we examine some less well-known properties of shrinkage estimates. In particular, we highlight that it is possible for some components of the shrinkage estimator to be placed further away from the prior mean than the original estimate. An analysis of this effect is provided within three different modeling settings-encompassing linear, logistic, and ordinal regression models. Additional simulations show that the outlined effect is not a mathematical artefact, but likely to occur in practice. As a byproduct, they also highlight the possibilities of sign reversals ("overshoots") for shrinkage estimates. We point out practical consequences and challenges, which might arise from the observed effects with special emphasis on psychometrics.

In addition, attention to online review sites has come to be an important part of protecting a physician's image. This article will discuss the importance of engaging the physician online review sites and help identify strategies for reviewing and improving a physician's online image.

    Abstract Influenza A virus contains regions of its segmented genome associated with ability to package the segments into virions, but many such regions are poorly characterised. We provide detailed predictions of the key locations within these packaging-associated regions, and their structures, by applying a recently-improved pipeline for delineating constrained regions in RNA viruses and applying structural prediction algorithms. We find and characterise other known constrained regions within influenza A genomes, including the region associated with the PA-X frameshift, regions associated with alternative splicing, and constraint around the initiation motif for a truncated PB1 protein, PB1-N92, associated with avian viruses. We further predict the presence of constrained regions that have not previously been described. The extra characterisation our work provides allows investigation of these key regions for drug target potential, and points towards determinants of packaging compatibility between segments.

    Abstract Testing asymptomatic people for SARS-CoV-2 aims to reduce COVID-19 transmission. Screening programmes' effectiveness depends upon testing strategy, sample handling logistics, test sensitivity and individual behaviour, in addition to dynamics of viral transmission. The interaction between these factors is not fully characterized. We investigated the interaction between these factors to determine how to optimize reduction of transmission. We estimate that under idealistic assumptions 70% of transmission may be averted, but under realistic assumptions only 7% may be averted. We show that programmes that overwhelm laboratory capacity or reduce isolation of those with minor symptoms have increased transmission compared with those that do not: programmes need to be designed to avoid these issues, or they will be ineffective or even counter-productive. Our model allows optimal selection of whom to test, quantifies the balance between accuracy and timeliness, and quantifies potential impacts of behavioural interventions. We anticipate our model can be used to understand optimal screening strategies for other infectious diseases with substantially different dynamics.

    Abstract The shoot apical meristem is the plant tissue that produces the plant aerial organs such as flowers and leaves. To better understand how the shoot apical meristem develops and adapts to the environment, imaging developing shoot meristems expressing fluorescence reporters through laser confocal microscopy is becoming increasingly important. Yet, there are not many computational pipelines enabling a systematic and high-throughput characterization of the produced microscopy images. This chapter provides a simple method to analyze 3D images obtained through laser scanning microscopy and quantitatively characterize radially or axially symmetric 3D fluorescence domains expressed in a tissue or organ by a reporter. Then, it presents different computational pipelines aiming at performing high-throughput quantitative image analysis of gene expression in plant inflorescence and floral meristems. This methodology has notably enabled the quantitative characterization of how stem cells respond to environmental perturbations in the Arabidopsis thaliana inflorescence meristem and will open new avenues in the use of quantitative analysis of gene expression in shoot apical meristems. Overall, the presented methodology provides a simple framework to analyze quantitatively gene expression domains from 3D confocal images at the tissue and organ level, which can be applied to shoot meristems and other organs and tissues.

    Abstract Family-school partnership interventions can effectively address behavioral concerns in students (T. E. Smith et al., 2020). However, little is known about factors impacting the successful delivery of behavioral strategies by parents and teachers in the context of such interventions, particularly for adolescent populations. This study used a mixed methods design to examine the treatment integrity of behavior support plans (BSPs) for adolescents in middle school. Parents and teachers of eight middle school students at risk for emotional or behavioral difficulties engaged in conjoint behavioral consultation to develop and implement BSPs. Participants completed measures of stress and student behavioral severity prior to implementing BSPs, and treatment integrity was monitored during implementation. Open-ended survey questions gathered qualitative implementation information from parents and teachers at the conclusion of the intervention. Quantitative findings indicated negative correlations between parenting stress and days of implementation (r = -.93) and between teacher perceptions of student behavioral severity and adherence to the BSP (r = -.81). Qualitative findings identified barriers to implementation (e.g., time and scheduling, intensity of student behavior); facilitators of implementation (e.g., alignment with values and practices, collaboration across participants); and parent endorsement of changes to parenting practices. Quantitative and qualitative results were in partial agreement regarding the relationship between student behavioral severity and implementation, and the triangulated results expanded our understanding of barriers and facilitators to implementing BSPs.     Abstract Despite discussions about the replicability of findings in psychological research, two issues have been largely ignored: selection mechanisms and model assumptions. Both topics address the same fundamental question: Does the chosen statistical analysis tool adequately model the data generation process? In this article, we address both issues and show, in a first step, that in the face of selective samples and contrary to common practice, the validity of inferences, even when based on experimental designs, can be claimed without further justification and adaptation of standard methods only in very specific situations. We then broaden our perspective to discuss consequences of violated assumptions in linear models in the context of psychological research in general and in generalized linear mixed models as used in item response theory. These types of misspecification are oftentimes ignored in the psychological research literature. It is emphasized that the above problems cannot be overcome by strategies such as preregistration, large samples, replications, or a ban on testing null hypotheses. To avoid biased conclusions, we briefly discuss tools such as model diagnostics, statistical methods to compensate for selectivity and semi- or non-parametric estimation. At a more fundamental level, however, a twofold strategy seems indispensable: (1) iterative, cumulative theory development based on statistical methods with theoretically justified assumptions, and (2) empirical research on variables that affect (self-) selection into the observed part of the sample and the use of this information to compensate for selectivity.

    Abstract Purpose: To report two patients with a complication of Yamane intrascleral haptic fixation surgery (ISHF) with the Zeiss CT Lucia 602 lens: severely tilted intraocular lens (IOL) leading to significantly decreased vision in the early post-operative period.
    Observations: We report two patients presenting with severely tilted IOL implants one day and one month following Yamane ISHF. The first patient is a monocular 81-year-old woman referred for treatment of cornea edema. Initial surgery involved replacement of an anterior chamber lens with a CT Lucia 602 posterior chamber lens using Yamane technique and Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty. The patient returned at one month follow-up with poor vision and IOL tilt observable at the slit lamp through a peripheral iridectomy site. Explanation of the Zeiss lens revealed haptic distortion at the optic-haptic insertion point such that each haptic was about 45° off axis to the plane of the optic in approximately equal and opposite directions. The second patient, a 75-year-old woman, was referred with a completely dislocated lens-bag complex in the right eye. The initial operative treatment for this patient included pars plana vitrectomy, retrieval and removal of the dislocated lens-bag complex, and placement of a Zeiss 602 lens via Yamane ISHF technique. On the first postoperative day, the patient was count fingers in the right eye with an intraocular pressure of 5 mm Hg and obvious IOL tilt on slit lamp examination. Explanation of the lens revealed severely distorted haptics relative to the optic by more than a 60-degree angle on both sides. In both cases, initial surgery was performed with an IOL inspected prior to implantation and found to have normal appearing haptics. At the end of each case, there was adequate centration and no tilt of the IOL. Management in both patients included removal of the defective lens and placement of a new, same power CT Lucia 602 lens via the Yamane technique. Visual acuity improved from CF to 20/30 best corrected after reoperation in both cases.
    Conclusions and importance: In summary, we describe a complication of Yamane ISHF with the CT Lucia 602 lens in which there is lens tilting associated with distortion at the optic-haptic fastening zone in the early postoperative period. In the event of a titled lens following Yamane ISHF, awareness of this complication may help surgeons consider lens replacement, as the haptics may be permanently distorted or damaged.
