Abstract The Azores islands have been historically linked to cetaceans, becoming an example of a successful transition from whaling to whale watching. Twenty-eight cetacean species have been sighted in these waters, making the archipelago one of the most recognised whale and dolphin watching destinations worldwide. The business is well-established in the region, operates in four of the nine islands year-round or seasonally and provides an excellent opportunity to collect long term information on cetacean distribution and abundance in an affordable way. Continuous monitoring is indeed essential to establish baseline knowledge and to evaluate cetacean response to potential natural or anthropogenic impacts. Opportunistic data greatly complement traditional dedicated surveys, providing additional support for appropriate management plans. The MONICET platform has been running continuously since 2009 as a collaborative instrument to collect, store, organise and disseminate cetacean data voluntarily collected by whale watching companies in the Azores. In the period covered by this dataset (2009-2020), 11 whale watching companies have voluntarily provided data from the four islands of the archipelago where whale watching takes place. The dataset contains more than 37,000 sightings of 25 species (22 cetaceans and three turtles). This manuscript presents the first long-term whale watching cetacean occurrence dataset openly available for the Azores. We explain the methodology used for data collection and address the potential biases and limitations inherent to the opportunistic nature of the dataset to maximise its usability by external users.

Abstract Several lists of marine fish from the Azores were published in the past. Most of those publications are difficult to access on line and several were not published in peer reviewed journals. This checklist updates all the chondrichthyan records for the Azores area (EEZ), according to the most recent taxonomic status for cartilaginous fish, together with information on the conservation status for all species. We also present recent literature data on rare species and recent records from the Azores. This is the first comprehensive list of cartilaginous fishes from the Azores to be published in GBIF database.

Abstract Since the first published comprehensive checklist of Azorean fishes - covering the whole EEZ region - several new records have been published and an updated checklist published in 2010. This new dataset covers all confirmed species of bony fish for the Azorean EEZ.In this update we made corrections to the previous checklists, updated the taxonomy according to the most recent bibliography and added two new species to the Azorean Actinopterygii checklist.

Abstract The Low Mondego ( Baixo Mondego , in Portuguese) river basin has been considerably modified by human interventions to prevent floods and to improve agricultural conditions over recent decades. This work analyzes the main impacts arising from those interventions and the socio-economic context in which they occurred. The development and application of a framework to compute the variation of the nitrogen surplus between 1986 and 2018 in the Low Mondego watershed in the central part Portugal is presented. The nitrogen mass balances take into consideration different land use types, inputs and outputs, thereby making it possible to understand how human interventions have impacted the variation of the surplus. It is noticeable that the major nitrogen sources are related to the agricultural sector. However, factors such as the implementation of the Code of Good Agricultural Practices, as well as social conditions, and regulations to reduce nitrogen emissions to the atmosphere helped to cut the nitrogen surplus. This work shows how improving the agricultural conditions has served to increase the crop productivity in improved areas. Very particular social circumstances led to the reduction in anthropogenic nitrogen sources, which has been accompanied by a decline in the nitrogen that is exported at the river outlet.
