Abstract Three flocks of broilers from the epizootiological region of South Banat, Serbia were chosen for examination, one flock with manifestation of respiratory disorders and two control flocks without respiratory disorders. In the flock with manifested respiratory disorders which was marked as flock number one (flock 1), high seroprevalence of specific antibodies for Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (46%) was found in 30-dayold broiler chickens. The symptoms presented were: depression, reduction in feed consumption and water intake, sneezing, mucosal nasal discharge and facial edema. Production results were below technological standards due to increased mortality, decreased growth range and increased number of stunted chickens. Autopsy found frequent changes in the trachea, air sacs and lungs, which were manifested as: tracheitis catarrhalis, aerosacculitis fibrinosa and pneumonia fibrinosa. In control flocks marked as flock number two (flock 2) and flock number three (flock 3) where 4 % and 8 % of seropositive chickens were found, there were no clinical signs which would indicate illness, and production results were much closer to technological standards as compared with flock 1. Autopsy found lower number of chickens with changed respiratory organs as compared with flock 1; in addition intensity of changes was lower than in flock 1. No case of airsacculitis was found in flocks 2 and 3, which was a frequent finding in flock 1.

Abstract The consequence of intramuscular application of HE was an increased count of total leukocytes in all trial groups, the most expressed leukocytosis being registered 24 h after application of HE. The application of HE had no significant effect on the count of monocytes in treated animals. The applied extract has caused a significant increase in the degree of phagocytosis by residing peritoneal macrophages and neutrophil granulocytes in blood.

Abstract This paper presents the results of investigations of parameter values of the red blood cell count in Wistar rats, after intramuscular application of rhizome and root extract of Helleborus odorus W. et K (HE). The trial was conducted in experimental conditions on 49 Wistar rats divided into 7 groups with 7 animals per unit (control and six experimental groups). The control group was treated by an intramuscular injection of sterile saline (0.25 ml/100 g BM). For the purpose of determing the duration of the HE effects, the animals were injected with a dose of 10 mg/100 g BMand blood was collected by cardial taps after 24, 48 and 72 hrs. Moreover, we investigated the influence of elevated temperatures on the noted HE extract effects, 24 hrs after the application of the inactivated (56 deg C 30 min) or denaturized (100 deg C 5 min) extract, as well as the influence of dialyzed HE. The obtained results of haematological analyses have pointed out the weak hemolyses activity of the extract. In all experimental groups, the erythrocyte count was decreased, but remained within reference values. Haemoglobin concentration and haematocrit values in the experimental and the control groups of rats were decreased in comparison to the physiological values, while the applied extract did not significantly affect the examined parameters.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine pathomorphological lesions in the organs of birds infected with H5N1 avian influenza virus, presence and distribution of the viral antigen in tissue samples and the degree of their correlation. Examination was conducted on the carcasses of seven mute swans (Cygnus olor) and one domestic rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus). After necropsy, trachea, lungs, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidney and intestine tissues were sampled for histopathology and immunohistochemical examination. LSAB method and H5N1 avian influenza virus nucleoprotein polyclonal antibodies were used for detecting the viral antigen in the examined tissues. The most frequent gross lesions were hemorrhages and necroses of the pancreas. Major histological lesions were multifocal necroses in the pancreas, liver and spleen, non purulent encephalitis, with neuronal dystrophy and neuronophagia. Viral nucleoprotein was immunohistochemically proven in the pancreas, brain, liver, lungs, and in one swan in the kidney. A high correlation between pathomorphological lesions and distribution of the viral antigen was determined.

Abstract Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play a significant role in hepatic fibrogenesis. In the following study we described the distribution of cells that express alpha-smooth muscle actin (alfa-SMA) and desmin in the cat liver with various degrees of fibrosis, as well as the significance of hepatic stellate cells and portal myofibroblasts in the genesis of fibrosis in cats with polycystic kideny disease. Liver samples from 15 necropsied Persian cats were examined. Liver fibrosis was confirmed in cats with terminal stage of chronic cholangiohepatitis and it was characterized by connective tissue septa which divide the liver parenchyma into irregular lobuli. Inflammation in the cat liver is connected with the activation of periductal myofibroblasts. The intensity of immunopositivity of perisinusoidal HSCs to alfa-SMA and desmin varied depending on the degree of fibrosis and was the strongest in livers of cats with cirrhosis.

Abstract The aim of this study was to estimate the association between body condition and fatty liver in high-yielding dairy cows. One hundred dry Holstein cows were selected. After dividing cows into groups according to fatty liver degree, it was shown that only cows with severe fatty liver were obese during the dry period and that 76.47% of cows from this group had marked condition loss from the dry period to puerperium, 47.06% from dry period to month 2 of lactation and 23.53% from puerperium to month 2 of lactation. These indicate that in cows with severe fatty liver lipomobilisation is intensive and starts around calving, before milk production enhacement. Our results indicate a strong association between body condition and fatty liver in cows, which can be estimated only when body condition is analyzed in details. Besides, our results clearly indicate that body condition is not the only etiological factor that leads to fatty liver in dairy cows.
