Abstract Objective: To assess dental anxiety in patients undergoing oral surgery, as well as its impact on blood pressure and heart rate. Material and Methods: A total of 233 patients answered a socio-demographic questionnaire and another one based on the Corah dental anxiety scale. Blood pressure and heart rate were assessed at three moments while: patients were in the waiting room, immediately before and after the procedure. Results: This study revealed a prevalence of anxiety of 77.3%. There was a statistically significant difference in mean systolic blood pressure and heart rate at the three moments of the evaluation. Anxiety was prevalent in the sample and was observed from the time in the waiting room until the time when local anesthesia was performed, causing variations in systolic blood pressure and heart rate, anxiety levels decreased after the end of the service. In conclusion, we observed that oral surgery is directly related to increased anxiety, and anxiety is mainly related to the change in heart rate.

Abstract Introduction: Several situations in the dental office may cause emergency cases. Administration of local anesthetics, dental care to patients with systemic deterioration, anxiety and fear are often the most common causes. Objective: To evaluate the dental level of perception of dental students facing the main dental emergencies. Methods: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study of the data through questionnaires. We interviewed 138 students from the 5th to the 10th period of Dental Medicine at the Federal University of Campina Grande, in the city of Patos, Paraíba. Results: We observed that 86.2% of the interviewed students knew the difference between urgency and emergency; 52.2% of the students confirmed receiving or having received extracurricular instructions about the topic; 59.4% answered that the learning provided about this topic after graduation is not being sufficient. About 17.4% of these students responded positively to knowing how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers; 11.6% of those interviewed felt themselves prepared to deal with an emergency situation, while 81.9% of the students interviewed intended to seek complementary training during or after graduation. Conclusion: Dental students were found to have a low level of perception about medical emergencies in the dental office.

Abstract Objective: The objective of this study was to relate the sinus ostium diameter with four known changes in the maxillary sinuses by means of cone beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), considering side and gender. Methodology: 415 CBCT scans were evaluated and a total of 328 CBCT scans from patients over 21 years of age were selected for the study. By means of corrected coronal reconstructions in positioning, an anteroposterior scan of the maxillary sinus region was performed to identify, locate, and measure the diameter of the sinus ostium on the right and left sides. Changes in the maxillary sinuses were considered: thickening of the sinus membrane, antral pseudocyst, partial veiling of the maxillary sinus and total veiling of the maxillary sinuses. Results: There was an influence of sex in the presence of sinus alterations, because in the sample, the odds (odds ratio) of men to have any sinus alteration was 2.44 times (p = 0.0002) greater than in women. In general, regardless of gender, there were no statistically significant differences between the diameters of the left (3.27 ± 1.2 mm) and right (3.12 ± 1.12 mm) ostia. There was also no relationship between age and diameter of ostia, and between age and types of changes sinuses. Conclusion: According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that there is no relationship between the diameter of the sinus ostium of the maxillary sinus and the most frequent sinus changes.

Abstract It is called the tooth that, when the chronological time of eruption arrives, remains partially or totally enclosed within the alveolar bone, with preservation or not of the pericoronal follicle. When not associated with any disorder, they can be used. Among the methods of utilization of impacted teeth, we can mention the accompaniment, orthodontically assisted eruption or transplant. The objective of this study was to report two cases of use of included teeth. Case 1 - Female patient, 15 years old, leucoderma, normossystemic, was referred by her orthodontist for orthopedic traction of elements 13 (upper right canine) and 23 (upper left canine) included. Clinical intraoral examination revealed absence of the same. The treatment consisted in the surgical exposition of elements 13 and 23 by the technique of apical repositioning of the flap (open technique) and orthodontic button gluing for posterior traction. Case 2 - Female patient, 20 years old, feoderma, normosystemic, presented for exodontia of element 37 (second molar inferior left). The intra-oral clinical examination revealed great coronary destruction in said element by dental caries. Due to the impossibility of other treatments, it was planned to remove the same and subsequent autogenous transplantation of element 38. We chose to perform the transplantation in a single (immediate) session. It is important for the dental surgeon to know and know the techniques of tooth utilization, as well as their advantages and disadvantages, in order to optimize their use and minimize the inconveniences arising from dental inclusion.

Abstract With the evolution of bacterial resistance over conventional antimicrobials and the development of new antimicrobials, the search for new compounds of natural origin has intensified, since plants with therapeutic potential constitute a source of new biologically active compounds, encouraging the development of new therapeutic options. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-adherent activity of the ethanolic extract of Praxelis clematidea (Griseb.) R.M. King & Robinson (Asteraceae) on strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecalis. Tests were carried out to determine the MIC and MBC by means of broth microdilution in 96-well plates, and to determine the MICA, a technique with inclined tubes in the presence of 5% sucrose was used. It was observed that the ethanolic extract of P. clematidea has strong bactericidal activity on K. pneumoniae, and moderate bactericidal activity on S. pneumoniae and E. faecalis. Being able to inhibit adherence to K. pneumoniae strains. Thus, the ethanolic extract of P. clematidea proves to be effective as an antimicrobial in the control and prevention of infections by S. pneumoniae, K. pneumoniae and E. faecalis. It also has an effective anti-adherent effect on K. pneumoniae strains.

Abstract Introduction:The central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a non-neoplastic entity, which may be able to cause considerable osseous destruction.Based on its clinical and radiological features, the diagnosis may be performed as aggressive or non-aggressive lesion, which is a determinant factor to the treatment and also something that will direct the type of treatment instituted. Case report and conclusion: The purpose of this study is to report a case of CGCG in a 22 year-old male, located in the right region of the mandibular body. Initially, the treatment consisted of intralesional corticosteroid injections.Because there was no improvement in this case, aggressive curettage was therefore performed.

Abstract The aim of this study was to report a case of two supernumerary teeth in the nasal cavity in a 22-year-old woman who presented pain, rhinorrhea, and inflammation of the nasal mucosa (rhinosinusitis). The computed tomograph scan showed two radiopaque images that were diagnosed as supernumerary nasal teeth. One was unerupted in the floor and the other inverted, and erupted on the floor on the left side of the nasal cavity. They were removed under general anesthesia, one through the palatine approach, and the other directly through the nasal cavity. The patient was followed for a year and there was no sign of recurrence of rhinosinusitis.
