Abstract Objective: Evaluate facial changes after Presurgical Naso-Alveolar Molding (PNAM) in unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients treated with Modified Grayson Technique and AlignerNAM (with DynaCleft nasal elevator) using a 3D facial scan.
    Design: Randomised clinical trial.
Setting: Institutional study. Participants: 20 UCLP patients allocated to two groups (10 patients each).
Interventions: Group A patients underwent PNAM with Modified Grayson Technique and Group B patients underwent AlignerNAM (with DynaCleft nasal elevator). Their 3D facial scans were obtained by using an iOSbased application (Bellus3D FaceApp) mounted on a novel frame. These .stl files were analysed using 3D software (GOM INSPECT) at three-time intervals; before intervention (T0), after intervention (T1) and one month after lip repair surgery (T2).
Main outcome measure(s): Changes in facial and nasolabial morphology.
Results: Both techniques brought significant improvement in the columellar length, nasal tip projection, columella angle, nasal tip angle and a significant reduction in cleft width. At T1, a statistically significant difference in angular and linear measurements was present in both groups. At T2, no statistically significant difference in linear parameters was observed between the two groups except for the outer lateral height of the non-cleft side, basal lateral height of the non-cleft side, and philtrum width. Similar pattern was observed in angular measurements with no statistically significant difference between the two groups except in nasolabial angle, anterior nasal base triangle III, and anterior nasal root triangle.
Conclusions: Aligner NAM and Modified Grayson technique are equally effective PNAM methods with similar clinical results in nasolabial morphology after lip repair surgery.

Abstract Context: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of tooth length measurements using conventional and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging techniques.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy and reliability of various tooth length measurements made on CBCT scans and conventional imaging techniques [intraoral periapical radiograph (IOPA) and orthopantomogram (OPG)].
Settings and design: This is an
Subjects and methods: In total, 50 extracted single-rooted premolar teeth were mounted on the dry human mandible. For each extracted tooth, measurements for tooth length, crown length, and root lengths were taken with a Vernier caliper and using three imaging modalities: CBCT, OPG, and IOPA radiographs. The measurements were compared with the gold standard (Vernier caliper).
Statistical analysis used: One-way analysis of variance was used to compare mean values between the groups that are Vernier caliper, CBCT, IOPA, and OPG. The multiple comparisons of means of tooth length, root length, and crown length were done by Bonferroni test.
Results: A significant difference in the tooth length measurements was seen between the measurements taken by CBCT and IOPA and between IOPA and OPG. But, no significant difference was seen between any other groups. The highly significant difference was seen between the root length measurements taken by IOPA and OPG and by CBCT and OPG. However, no significant difference was seen between any other groups. No significant difference was seen in between the crown length measurements taken by Vernier caliper and CBCT and between IOPA and OPG. However, a significant difference was seen between all the groups.
Conclusions: Among the radiographic techniques, CBCT was found to be the most accurate in measuring the tooth, root, and crown lengths.

Abstract Introduction: Proximal stripping of enamel is a routine clinical procedure employed in orthodontics to create space or for balancing tooth size discrepancies. This procedure may result in heat transfer to the pulp, predisposing it to histopathological changes and necrosis of the pulp tissue.
Objective: To measure the temperature changes in the pulp chamber during different stripping procedures.
Methods: 80 proximal surfaces of 40 extracted human premolar teeth were stripped using four techniques: diamond burs in air-rotor handpiece with air-water spray; diamond burs in micromotor handpiece, with and without a coolant spray; and hand-held diamond strips. A J-type thermocouple connected to a digital thermometer was inserted into the pulp chamber for evaluation of temperature during the stripping procedure.
Results: An increase in the pulpal temperature was observed for all stripping method. Diamond burs in micromotor handpiece without coolant resulted in the higher increase in temperature (3.5oC), followed by hand-held diamond strips (2.8oC), diamond burs in air-rotor with air-water spray (1.9oC); and the smallest increase was seen with diamond burs in micromotor handpiece with coolant (1.65oC). None of the techniques resulted in temperature increase above the critical level of 5.5oC.
Conclusion: Frictional heat produced with different stripping techniques results in increase in the pulpal temperature, therefore, caution is advised during this procedure. A coolant spray can limit the increase in temperature of the pulp.

Abstract Background: Rugae are the anatomical folds that are located on the anterior third of palate behind the incisive papillae. They are also known as "Plica palatine," and the study of these patterns is called palatoscopy. It can be used in various fields such as sex determination, orthodontics and forensic odontology.
Objective: To investigate palatal rugae patterns in females and males and to evaluate the stability of these patterns in pre- and post-operative orthodontic cases.
Materials and methods: Fifty patients were selected for this study (25 males and 25 females). From the above sample, 10 males and 10 females had undergone orthodontic treatment and their casts were retrieved for sex determination analysis and stability of rugae patterns pre- and post-treatment.
Results: Changes occur in bony structures during fixed orthodontic treatment but rugae patterns remain stable. Kappa stats and Chi square test were used to analyze agreement between the two evaluators, and 95% correct matches were achieved.
Conclusion: Palatal rugae are unique to every individual and can be used as an indicator in forensic odontology.
