Abstract As its prevalence increases and its association with cardiovascular disease and mortality is established, there is a need to improve prevention and management strategies for hypertension. Therefore, we aimed to compare differences in cardiovascular health status between men and women with hypertension defined by systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg, and/or treatment with antihypertensive drugs. The association between cardiovascular health status and health-related quality of life was also evaluated. Additionally, a secondary analysis was performed on the cross-sectional data from 7306 adults with hypertension, ≥40 years of age between 2013 and 2018. Of this sample, 51.2% of patients were women from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The seven Cardiovascular Health Metrics were used to quantify cardiovascular health status and the 5-dimensional European Quality of Life Questionnaire (EQ-5D) was used to evaluate health-related quality of life. A higher proportion of men than that of women was observed in the poor cardiovascular health score group [total score 0-7], with a higher proportion of women in the intermediate group [total score 8-10] and ideal group [total 11-14] (p<0.0001). The proportion of women in the EQ-5D index was higher than that of men in the poor and intermediate groups (p<0.0001), with no difference in the proportion of men and women in the ideal group (p = 0.1452). Furthermore, specific cardiovascular risk factors were different between men and women: women had lower physical activity level and higher prevalence of high cholesterol (≥200 mg/dl), and men had higher body mass indices and worse diet management. These findings indicate that prevention and management strategies for hypertension and cardiovascular health might need to differ for men and women to improve outcomes.

Abstract Transports within industrial logistics networks are planned strategically. Due to the existence of uncertainties an operational control of transports is necessary. Thereby, dispatchers are today not supported adequately. A control approach for dynamic, complex and multimodal transports is developed, which intends to support or automate the operational control. The approach has a decentral and heterarchical organization, in which the goods and means of transports are modeled as agents

Abstract Objectives: This study aimed to compare the mental health status of patients with diabetes before and after the COVID-19 pandemic and to determine the effect of COVID-19 on their mental health status. This study was the first to investigate the relationship between diabetes and mental health in the Korean population during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Design: This retrospective cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of mental health problems before (2018-2019) and during (2020-2021) the COVID-19 pandemic in individuals with diabetes aged 40 years or older who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mental health problems were assessed using self-reported experiences of depression diagnosis, stress perception and suicide ideation. Depression was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Clinically significant depression requiring treatment was determined using an optimal cut-off score of 10 out of a total of 27 points.
Participants: There were 824 men and 763 women in the 2018-2019 survey and 882 men and 887 women in 2020-2021.
Results: In the unadjusted analysis, women had a statistically significantly higher prevalence of suicide ideation in 2020-2021 (2.9, 95% CI: 1.5 to 4.2) than in 2018-2019 (1.0, 95% CI: 0.4 to 1.7, but p<0.0067). There was no statistically significant difference in both men and women in 2018-2019 after adjusting for age, education, economic activity, hypoglycaemic drug intake or insulin injection, current alcohol consumption, hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia. A comparison of the results of the PHQ-9 survey conducted in 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 found no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of depressive disorder among both men and women.
Conclusions: Long-term, retrospective observations and studies on the effects of COVID-19 on the mental health of patients with diabetes should be conducted in the future.

Abstract Birth weight is a key human biological characteristic as a measure of prenatal development and a variable related to later quality of life. Studies have firmly established that a stressful situation in utero adversely affects newborns' birth weight. Using birth statistics provided by Statistics Korea, this study examined how universal cash transfer during the COVID-19 crisis affected newborns' birth weight in South Korea. Given that the normal gestation period is nearly 10 months, we chose newborns without a self-selection issue by utilizing information on birthdate and total pregnancy period from the dataset, subsequently applying difference-in-differences estimation. Results showed that universal cash transfer offset newborns' weight loss amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The effects differed according to households' sociodemographic characteristics, with effects being more pronounced for girls; more pronounced for households with more than two children; more pronounced in local districts severely affected during the initial stage of the pandemic, but less significant in metropolitan regions; and more among middle-class families. This study presents evidence that governmental cash transfer during the pandemic has improved newborns' health and that continuing such a policy would positively impact future generations from a health perspective.

Abstract Difficult airway management is critical to ensuring patient safety. It involves addressing the challenges and failures that can occur, even with skilled healthcare providers, during face mask ventilation, intubation, supraglottic airway placement, invasive airway procedures, or extubation. Although the incidence of the most critical situation in airway management, "cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate," is low at 0.0019-0.04%, its occurrence can have severe consequences, including dental injury, airway injury, hypoxic brain damage, and even death. This study aimed to offer healthcare providers a comprehensive and evidence-based approach for difficult airway management by reviewing recent guidelines and incorporating the latest evidence-based practices to improve their preparedness and competence in difficult airway management, and thus ultimately contribute to improved patient safety.

Abstract Twin pregnancy with a complete hydatidiform mole and coexisting fetus (CHMCF) is an exceedingly rare condition with an incidence of about 1 in 20,000-100,000 pregnancies. It can be detected by prenatal ultrasonography and an elevated maternal serum beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (BhCG) level. Herein, the author reports a case of CHMCF which was incidentally diagnosed through pathologic examination without preoperative knowledge. The 41-year-old woman, transferred due to preterm labor, delivered a female baby by cesarean section at 28 + 5 weeks of gestation. Clinically, the surgeon suspected placenta accreta on the surgical field, and the placental specimen was sent to the pathology department. On gross examination, focal vesicular and cystic lesions were identified separately from the normal-looking placental tissue. The pathologic diagnosis was CHMCF and considering the fact that placenta accreta was originally suspected, invasive hydatidiform mole was not ruled out. After radiologic work-up, metastatic lung lesions were detected, and methotrexate was administered in six cycles at intervals of every two weeks. The author presents the clinicopathological features of this unexpected CHMCF case accompanied by pulmonary metastasis, compares to literature review findings, and emphasizes the meticulous pathologic examination.

Abstract Microorganisms regulate the expression of energetically expensive phenotypes via a collective decision-making mechanism known as quorum sensing (QS). This study investigates the intricate dynamics of biofilm growth and QS-controlled biofilm dispersal in heterogeneous porous media, employing a pore-scale reactive transport modeling approach. Model simulations carried out under various fluid flow conditions and biofilm growth scenarios reveal that QS processes are influenced not only by the biomass density of biofilm colonies but also by a complex interplay between pore architecture, flow velocity, and the rates of biofilm growth and dispersal. This study demonstrates that pore architecture controls the initiation of QS processes and advection gives rise to oscillatory growth of biofilms. Such oscillation is suppressed if biofilm dynamics are in favor of sustaining a sufficiently high signal concentration, such as fast growth or slow dispersal rates. By establishing a mathematical framework, this study contributes to the fundamental understanding of QS-controlled biofilm dynamics in complex environments.

Abstract Background: Although the cardiovascular health and quality of life (QoL) of stroke survivors have been previously studied, no study has investigated the correlation between cardiovascular health and QoL. This study aimed to investigate whether there would be a difference in the quality of life (QoL) in this population depending on the degree of cardiovascular health.
Methods: Overall, 577 people aged > 40 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2013 to 2018 were included and were divided into three groups according to the survey period (2013-2014, n = 145; 2015-2016, n = 198; and 2017-2018, n = 234). Participants were further divided into the following groups based on their cardiovascular health score, as defined by the American Heart Association: poor, intermediate, and ideal groups. We examined how the health-related QoL score was expressed through the five-dimensional European Quality of Life Questionnaire (EQ-5D-3L).
Results: The ideal (cardiovascular health scores 11-14) and intermediate (cardiovascular health scores 8-10) groups had the lowest (7.72-8.14%) and highest (46.39-57.70%) number of participants, respectively. The total EQ-5D index score was highest in the ideal group, followed by the intermediate and poor groups across all three periods (2013-2014, p = 0.0015; 2015-2016, p = 0.0040; 2017-2018, p < 0.0001). The dimension-specific analysis revealed that, Findings showed that stroke survivors' mobility significantly varied by cardiovascular health scores (p = 0.0371 in 2015-2016, p =0.0486 in 2017-2018), whereas usual activities (p = 0.0322) and pain/discomfort (p = 0.0420) were significantly different among the three groups in 2015-2016.
Conclusion: QoL in post-stroke survivors, when related to cardiovascular health degree, could be correlated with stroke sequelae.
