    Abstract The relationship between satellite thermal infrared anomalies and earthquakes or fault activity has been studied for more than 30 years. In this study, five strong earthquakes (the MS6.1 earthquake in Biru, Tibet; the MS7.4 earthquake in Madoi, Qinghai; the MS6.0 earthquake in Delingha, Qinghai; the MS6.1 earthquake in Lushan, Sichuan; and the MS6.8 earthquake in Luding, Sichuan) that occurred on the western mainland of China over the past 2 years were studied. Based on monthly MODIS land surface temperature (LST) data and daily NOAA satellite longwave radiation data, the departure algorithm and the Robust Satellite Techniques (RST) algorithm were used to extract and analyze the characteristics of thermal infrared anomaly information for blocks and faults around the earthquake from different temporal and spatial scales. The results showed the following: 1) In the medium-term scale study based on monthly data, blocks near the epicenters of five earthquakes showed temperature increase anomalies of 1–6 months before the earthquakes; the areas of temperature increase anomalies were clearly controlled by the spatial distribution of the blocks, and earthquakes mostly occurred within blocks with frequent temperature increase anomalies. 2) In the short-term, thermal infrared anomaly feature tracking based on daily data meant that obvious thermal anomalies were also found. The thermal anomalies before the five seismic events all appeared within a period of 3 months before the earthquake, and there were multiple consecutive days of anomalies. The significant temperature increases generally occurred a month before the earthquake, and the distribution of the anomalies was mostly in the form of strips, which is basically consistent with the trend of the fault zone. The use of thermal infrared remote sensing data to summarize the dynamic evolution of thermal infrared anomalies of blocks and faults before strong earthquakes can provide a basis for the long-term monitoring of fault activity and seismic monitoring by satellite ...

    Abstract Introduction. We investigated the proportion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and their subsets in patients with rheumatic diseases and clarified the association between these cells and the patient clinical data. Methods. Patients with rheumatic diseases and healthy controls were recruited. The clinical characteristics were obtained. The MDSCs and their subsets were marked with fluorescently labelled antibodies and were then analyzed with flow cytometry. Results. The patients included 31 with RA, 21 with AS, 14 with OA, 11 with SLE with arthritis, 13 with SLE without arthritis, 9 with Gout, 10 with HUA, and 25 healthy controls. The proportions of MDSCs, M-MDSCs, and G-MDSCs were higher in patients with RA than in healthy controls (6.56±6.77% versus 1.46±0.96%, 2.52±3.81% versus 0.35±0.35%, and 1.13±1.64% versus 0.18±0.14%; p<0.001). The same increased cells were also found in other patients. The proportions of MDSCs and M-MDSCs were mostly correlated with the patient's joint inflammation indexes and the disease activity. When other cell subsets were adjusted, the increased risk of arthritis was also obtained for M-MDSCs (adjusted OR=5.772; p=0.031). Conclusions. The expansion of MDSCs and their subsets was correlated with the disease activity and joint inflammation in patient with different rheumatic diseases. The proportion of M-MDSCs was associated with the risk of arthritis in those populations.

    Abstract BACKGROUND: It has been confirmed that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), a macrophage-derived pro-inflammatory cytokine, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis vulgaris and psoriatic arthritis (PsV&PsA). In contrast, the reported association of TNFα gene promoter region single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and PsV&PsA has remained controversial. Accordingly, we performed a meta-analysis to provide new evidence that SNPs in the TNFα gene promoter region alter not only the risk of psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) but also of PsV&PsA. METHODS: Interrelated literature dated to October 2012 was acquired from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink databases. The number of the genotypes and/or alleles for the TNFα promoter in the PsV and PsA and control subjects was obtained. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to calculate the risk of PsV and/or PsA with TNFα promoter SNPs. RESULTS: A total of 26 papers of 2159 for PsV (2129 normal controls) and 2360 for PsA (2997 normal controls) were included in our meta-analysis. The results showed that the variant genotype and allele of TNFα -308A/G was protective in pooled groups of patients with PsV&PsA (OR = 0.682, 0.750; 95% CI, 0.596-0.779, 0.653-0.861). However, the variant genotypes and alleles of TNFα -238A/G and -857T/C had an increased risk of PsV&PsA (OR = 2.493, 2.228, 1.536, 1.486, 95% CI, 1.777-3.498, 1.628-3.049, 1.336-1.767, 1.309-1.685). Moreover, the meta-analysis revealed a significant association between TNFα -238A/G and -857T/C polymorphism and PsA susceptibility (OR = 2.242, 2.052, 1.419, 1.465; 95% CI, 1.710-2.941, 1.614-2.610, 1.214-1.658, 1.277-1.681). In contrast, the variant genotypes and alleles of TNFα -308A/G proved to be protective against PsV (OR = 0.574, 0.650, 95% CI, 0.478-0.690, 0.556-0.759), whereas TNFα -238A/G was found to have a risk association (OR = 2.636, 2.223, 95% CI, 1.523-4.561, 1.317-3.751).
