Abstract Continuum limits are a powerful tool in the study of many-body systems, yet their validity is often unclear when long-range interactions are present. In this work, we rigorously address this issue and put forth an exact representation of long-range interacting lattices that separates the model into a term describing its continuous analog, the integral contribution, and a term that fully resolves the microstructure, the lattice contribution. For any system dimension, any lattice, any power-law interaction, and for linear, nonlinear, and multi-atomic lattices, we show that the lattice contribution can be described by a differential operator based on the multidimensional generalization of the Riemann zeta function, namely the Epstein zeta function. We employ our representation in Fourier space to solve the important problem of long-range interacting unconventional superconductors. We derive a generalized Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer gap equation and find emerging exotic phases in two-dimensional superconductors with topological phase transitions. Finally, we utilize non-equilibrium Higgs spectroscopy to analyze the impact of long-range interactions on the collective excitations of the condensate. We show that the interactions can be used to fine-tune the Higgs mode's stability, ranging from exponential decay of the oscillation amplitude up to complete stabilization.

Abstract Background: For cancer domains such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a large set of data elements is obtained from different institutions with heterogeneous data definitions within one patient course. The lack of clinical data harmonization impedes cross-institutional electronic data exchange and future meta-analyses.
Objective: This study aimed to identify and harmonize a semantic core of common data elements (CDEs) in clinical routine and research documentation, based on a systematic metadata analysis of existing documentation models.
Methods: Lists of relevant data items were collected and reviewed by hematologists from two university hospitals regarding routine documentation and several case report forms of clinical trials for AML. In addition, existing registries and international recommendations were included. Data items were coded to medical concepts via the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) by a physician and reviewed by another physician. On the basis of the coded concepts, the data sources were analyzed for concept overlaps and identification of most frequent concepts. The most frequent concepts were then implemented as data elements in the standardized format of the Operational Data Model by the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium.
Results: A total of 3265 medical concepts were identified, of which 1414 were unique. Among the 1414 unique medical concepts, the 50 most frequent ones cover 26.98% of all concept occurrences within the collected AML documentation. The top 100 concepts represent 39.48% of all concepts' occurrences. Implementation of CDEs is available on a European research infrastructure and can be downloaded in different formats for reuse in different electronic data capture systems.
Conclusions: Information management is a complex process for research-intense disease entities as AML that is associated with a large set of lab-based diagnostics and different treatment options. Our systematic UMLS-based analysis revealed the existence of a core data set and an exemplary reusable implementation for harmonized data capture is available on an established metadata repository.

Abstract BACKGROUND: Upstream open reading frames (uORFs) represent translational control elements within eukaryotic transcript leader sequences. Recent data showed that uORFs can encode for biologically active proteins and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-presented peptides in malignant and benign cells suggesting their potential role in cancer cell development and survival. However, the role of uORFs in translational regulation of cancer-associated transcripts as well as in cancer immune surveillance is still incompletely understood. METHODS: We examined the translational regulatory effect of 29 uORFs in 13 cancer-associated genes by dual-luciferase assays. Cellular expression and localization of uORF-encoded peptides (uPeptides) were investigated by immunoblotting and immunofluorescence-based microscopy. Furthermore, we utilized mass spectrometry-based immunopeptidome analyses in an extensive dataset of primary malignant and benign tissue samples for the identification of naturally presented uORF-derived HLA-presented peptides screening for more than 2000 uORFs. RESULTS: We provide experimental evidence for similarly effective translational regulation of cancer-associated transcripts through uORFs initiated by either canonical AUG codons or by alternative translation initiation sites (aTISs). We further demonstrate frequent cellular expression and reveal occasional specific cellular localization of uORF-derived peptides, suggesting uPeptide-specific biological implications. Immunopeptidome analyses delineated a set of 125 naturally presented uORF-derived HLA-presented peptides. Comparative immunopeptidome profiling of malignant and benign tissue-derived immunopeptidomes identified several tumor-associated uORF-derived HLA ligands capable to induce multifunctional T cell responses. CONCLUSION: Our data provide direct evidence for the frequent expression of uPeptides in benign and malignant human tissues, suggesting a potentially widespread function of uPeptides in cancer biology. These findings may inspire novel approaches in direct molecular as well as immunotherapeutic targeting of cancer-associated uORFs and uPeptides.
