Abstract Base-catalyzed ring-opening reaction of epoxides with the thiol nucleophiles is useful in the preparation and post-polymerization modification of synthetic polymers. Due to its many beneficial characteristics, this process is referred to as the thiol-epoxy 'click' reaction. In this article, our aim is to discuss the fundamental attributes of this process by tracing our own steps in the field. We initially address the aspects of efficiency, regio-selectivity, stoichiometry, and reaction conditions with the help of linear, hyperbranched, graft, dendritic, and cross-linked poly(β-hydroxy thioether)s. A special emphasis is placed on hydrogel synthesis and photopolymerization on surfaces. Subsequently, quenching of the alkoxide anion is considered which is a critical step in the formation of the β-hydroxy thioether linkage upon completion of reaction. The amenability of further reaction on the hydroxy and thioether groups through esterification and sulfur alkylation is then discussed. Initially, post-gelation/fabrication modification of sulfide linkages is considered to obtain cationic sulfonium hydrogels and zwitterionic photopatterned networks with antibacterial and antibiofouling properties, respectively. A post-synthesis functionalization strategy is then described to access same centered and segregated main-chain poly(β-hydroxy sulfonium)s as potent antibacterial materials. In side-chain polysulfides, the sequential post-synthesis modifications involving poly(glycidyl methacrylate) scaffolds can lead to the formation of amphiphilic homopolymers. The application of such materials is discussed in the arena of siRNA delivery. Finally, concerns relating to the formation of disulfide defects and open research goals such as study of the orthogonality of the reaction are addressed.

Abstract Tigers are endangered apex predators. They typify endangered species because they are elusive, rare, and face numerous threats across their range. Tigers also symbolize conservation. However, it is very difficult to study tigers because of their stated nature. Also, tiger conservation is a geopolitically sensitive topic, making it difficult to use the studies to propose evidence-based management that allows their recovery, especially in the context of conservation genetics. Zhang et al. (Mol. Ecol. Resour., 2022) have created very valuable and rare resources to aid the community in conserving tigers. First, they present chromosome level genome assemblies of a South China tiger and an Amur tiger. Second, they present whole genome sequences of 16 captive South China tigers. Additionally, by using the assemblies they model the demographic history of these populations, estimate inbreeding and the potential threats they face in captivity. This approach is particularly important because genetic management is now the only remaining option for South China tigers, because they are extinct in the wild. In other words, captive individuals are our only hope for some day restoring the wild populations of South China tigers.

Abstract Foreign body ingestion and aspiration can present as a life-threatening emergency in children. These foreign bodies are diagnosed based on history, physical exam, and focused radiography to reduce the risk of excessive radiation. We describe a case of a 3-year-old child who ingested magnetic beads and presented to the emergency department with no symptoms. On a single view x-ray of chest and abdomen, the magnetic beads were identified in the abdomen but a closer look at these single view x-rays raised a suspicion of additional foreign bodies in the larynx. A dedicated x-ray of the neck identified 2 more magnetic beads locked with each other on either side of the epiglottis. These laryngeal magnetic beads were nearly missed on initial x-rays, especially because the child had no symptoms of upper airway obstruction. This case report provides further evidence that in the evaluation of radiopaque foreign bodies in children we should strongly consider "nose to rectum" x-rays.
