Abstract Since the end of the last century, geographers have been using the concept of touristification understood as a complex process in which various stakeholders interfere, transforming a territory through tourist activity. However, over recent years, this word has become popular in other areas with a distinct connotation, understanding touristification as a negative idea of tourism, like the massification of a destination or as a synonymous for gentrification or tourism-phobia. This situation discourages the use of the term and causes the necessity to question the usefulness of the concept, considered as too ambiguous or even empty. We argue for a correct use of the term touristification, focused on the territorial phenomenon and process it is meant to describe in a geographical approach without ideological preconceived notion, to construct knowledge from a territorial understanding of tourism in an ever-globalized world.

Abstract In Information-Centric Networking (ICN), consumers send interest packets to the network and receive data packets as a response to their request without taking care of the producers, which have provided the content, contrary to conventional IP networks. ICN supports the use of multiple paths; however, with multiple consumers and producers, coordination among the nodes is required to efficiently use the network resources. Network coding (NC) is a promising tool to address this issue. The challenge in the case of NC is to be able to get independent coded content in response to multiple parallel interests by one or several consumers. In this work, we propose a novel construction called MILIC (Multiple Interests for Linearly Independent Contents) that impose constraints on how the replies to interests are coded, intending to get linearly independent contents in response to multiple interests. Several protocol variants, called MICN (MILIC-ICN), built on top of NDN (Named Data Networking), are proposed to integrate these interest constraints and NC of data packets. Numerical analysis and simulations illustrate that the MILIC construction performs well and that the MICN protocols are close to optimal throughput on some scenarios. MICN protocols compare favorably to existing protocols and show significant benefits when considering the total number of transmitted packets in the network, and in the case of high link loss rate.

Abstract Network slicing has emerged as a key concept in 5G systems, allowing Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to build isolated logical networks (slices) on top of shared infrastructure networks managed by Infrastructure Providers (InP). Network slicing requires the assignment of infrastructure network resources to virtual network components at slice activation time and the adjustment of resources for slices under operation. Performing these operations just-in-time, on a best-effort basis, comes with no guarantee on the availability of enough infrastructure resources to meet slice requirements. This paper proposes a prioritized admission control mechanism for concurrent slices based on an infrastructure resource reservation approach. The reservation accounts for the dynamic nature of slice requests while being robust to uncertainties in slice resource demands. Adopting the perspective of an InP, reservation schemes are proposed that maximize the number of slices for which infrastructure resources can be granted while minimizing the costs charged to the MNOs. This requires the solution of a max-min optimization problem with a non-linear cost function and non-linear constraints induced by the robustness to uncertainties of demands and the limitation of the impact of reservation on background services. The cost and the constraints are linearized and several reduced-complexity strategies are proposed to solve the slice admission control and resource reservation problem. Simulations show that the proportion of admitted slices of different priority levels can be adjusted by a differentiated selection of the delay between the reception and the processing instants of a slice resource request.

Abstract The ACCLAIM Study aimed to assess the effect of a package of community interventions on the demand for, uptake of, and retention of HIV-positive pregnant/postpartum women in maternal and child health (MCH) and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services. The study occurred from 2013 to 2015 in Eswatini, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. The three interventions were: (1) a social learning and action component for community leaders, (2) community days, and (3) peer discussion groups. Household cross-sectional surveys on community members' MCH and PMTCT knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs were analyzed pre- and post-intervention, using MCH, HIV stigma, and gender-equitable men (GEM) indicators. We used t-tests to measure the significance of mean pre- vs. post-intervention score changes stratified by gender within each intervention arm and generalized linear models to compare mean score changes of the cumulative intervention arms with the community leaders-only intervention. Response rates were over 85% for both surveys for men and women, with a total of 3337 pre-intervention and 3162 post-intervention responses. The combined package of three interventions demonstrated a significantly greater increase in MCH scores for both women (diff = 1.34, p ≤ 0.001) and men (diff = 2.03, p < 0.001). The arms that included interventions for both community leader engagement and community days (arms 2 and 3)led to a greater increase in mean GEM scores compared to the community leader engagement intervention alone (arm 1), for both women (diff = 1.32, p = 0.002) and men (diff = 1.37, p = 0.004). Our findings suggest that a package of community interventions may be most effective in increasing community MCH/HIV knowledge and improving gender-equitable norms.

Abstract This paper considers controlled scalar systems relying on a lossy wireless feedback channel. In contrast with the existing literature, the focus is not on the system controller but on the wireless transmit power controller that is implemented at the system side for reporting the state to the controller. Such a problem may be of interest, \emph{e.g.}, for the remote control of drones, where communication costs may have to be considered. Determining the power control policy that minimizes the combination of the dynamical system cost and the wireless transmission energy is shown to be a non-trivial optimization problem. It turns out that the recursive structure of the problem can be exploited to determine the optimal power control policy. As illustrated in the numerical performance analysis, in the scenario of a dynamics without perturbations, the optimal power control policy consists in decreasing the transmit power at the right pace. This allows a significant performance gain compared to conventional policies such as the full transmit power policy or the open-loop policy.
