    Abstract There is overwhelming evidence, from laboratory experiments, observations, and computational studies, that coherent structures can cause intermittent transport, dramatically enhancing transport. A proper description of this intermittent phenomenon, however, is extremely difficult, requiring a new non-perturbative theory, such as statistical description. Furthermore, multi-scale interactions are responsible for inevitably complex dynamics in strongly non-equilibrium systems, a proper understanding of which remains a main challenge in classical physics. As a remarkable consequence of multi-scale interaction, a quasi-equilibrium state (the so-called self-organisation) can however be maintained. This special issue aims to present different theories of statistical mechanics to understand this challenging multiscale problem in turbulence. The 14 contributions to this Special issue focus on the various aspects of intermittency, coherent structures, self-organisation, bifurcation and nonlocality. Given the ubiquity of turbulence, the contributions cover a broad range of systems covering laboratory fluids (channel flow, the Von Kármán flow), plasmas (magnetic fusion), laser cavity, wind turbine, air flow around a high-speed train, solar wind and industrial application

    Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to apply a health partnership program using commercially available mobile health apps to improve cardiovascular risk factors in male employees and verify its effectiveness.
    Methods: Using a randomized control group pretest-posttest design, male employees with cardiovascular risk factors from five small and medium-sized workplaces were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 32) and a control group (n = 31). The experimental group was encouraged to use three mobile health apps for 12 weeks to acquire the necessary cardiovascular disease-related information and practice strengthening training, walking, and diet management appropriate to their level. They also received feedback on their weekly activities and motivational text messages from health partners. Hypotheses were tested using the SPSS WIN 22.0.
    Results: The experimental group showed a significant difference compared to the control group in terms of their perception of mobile health app (
    Conclusion: Intervention using mobile apps based on partnership with health managers is effective in improving the objective cardiovascular risk index in male employees; therefore, such intervention should be continuously used as a useful lifestyle modification strategy in the workplace.

    Abstract We investigate the effects of different stochastic noises on the dynamics of the edge-localised modes (ELMs) in magnetically confined fusion plasmas by using a time-dependent PDF method, path-dependent information geometry (information rate, information length), and entropy-related measures (entropy production, mutual information). The oscillation quenching occurs due to either stochastic particle or magnetic perturbations, although particle perturbation is more effective in this amplitude diminishment compared with magnetic perturbations. On the other hand, magnetic perturbations are more effective at altering the oscillation period; the stochastic noise acts to increase the frequency of explosive oscillations (large ELMs) while decreasing the frequency of more regular oscillations (small ELMs). These stochastic noises significantly reduce power and energy losses caused by ELMs and play a key role in reproducing the observed experimental scaling relation of the ELM power loss with the input power. Furthermore, the maximum power loss is closely linked to the maximum entropy production rate, involving irreversible energy dissipation in non-equilibrium. Notably, over one ELM cycle, the information rate appears to keep almost a constant value, indicative of a geodesic. The information rate is also shown to be useful for characterising the statistical properties of ELMs, such as distinguishing between explosive and regular oscillations and the regulation between the pressure gradient and magnetic fluctuations.

    Abstract Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing quality of life (QoL) of low-income older adults (LOAs) with sarcopenia.
    Methods: A convenience sample of 125 older adults was recruited from Jeonbuk Province, South Korea. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire that included nutritional status, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument-Older Adults Module. Additionally, grip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle mass, were evaluated, along with the short physical performance battery.
    Results: Sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia were observed in 43.2% and 56.8% of participants, respectively. Using multiple regression analysis, depression (β = -.40,
    Conclusion: The results of this study can be used to develop a nursing intervention program and establish policies to improve depression, anxiety, and nutritional status to enhance QoL of LOAs with sarcopenia.

    Abstract The high confinement mode (H-mode) is the widely adopted standard operation scenario for the path to fusion in toroidal confinement devices. Since its discovery in 1982, the H-mode and access to the H-mode (the low to high and high to low transitions) remain two of the most actively researched areas in magnetically confined fusion programmes across the world. Significant progress has been made in the understanding of the intricate H-mode phase dynamics in recent years, from improvement in experimental diagnostic capability, theoretical development and modelling. The 'H-mode transition and pedestal studies' Special Issue provides a timely overview of recent progress in the study of H-modes covering experimental studies, further theoretical inquiry and computational modelling. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'H-mode transition and pedestal studies in fusion plasmas'.

    Abstract Objectives: This study aimed to identify and compare nursing students' achievement emotions associated with clinical practicums and alternative learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
    Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study enrolled 236 nursing students. Participants completed a web-based, self-administered survey regarding achievement emotions. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to calculate mean differences in achievement emotions associated with clinical practicums and alternative learning.
    Results: Nursing students who undertook e-learning reported higher negative achievement emotions than those who experienced other alternative learning modalities. Higher achievement emotions were associated with clinical practicums than with alternative learning. The most frequently reported negative emotions were anxiety associated with clinical practicums and boredom with alternative learning.
    Conclusions: Nurse educators should design and implement supportive clinical learning experiences to engender productive achievement emotions. Implications for an international audience: Nurse educators should play roles in providing well-designed and supportive clinical learning environments to help nursing students regulate achievement emotions.

    Abstract The physiological response of the cardio-vascular system (CVS) to physical activity is of great importance to those working in sporting research and has profound consequences for the health and well-being of people. Coronary vasodilation and the physiological mechanisms involved in exercise have frequently been the focus of numerical models for simulating exercise. This is partly achieved using the time-varying-elastance (TVE) theory, which prescribes the pressure-volume relationship of the ventricle as a periodic function of time, tuned using empirical data. The empirical foundations of the TVE method however, and its suitability for CVS modelling are frequently questioned. To overcome this challenge, we adopt a different synergistic approach in which a model for the microscale heart muscle (myofibers) activity is embedded within a macro organ-scale CVS model. We developed such a synergistic model by including the coronary flow and various control mechanisms at the circulation level through feedback and feedforward means, and at the microscale (contractile) through the regulation of ATP availability and myofiber force depending on exercise intensity or heart rate. The coronary flow produced by the model displays the well-known 2-phase character of the flow, which is preserved under exercise. The model is tested by simulating reactive hyperemia, which is a transient occlusion of the coronary flow, successfully reproducing the additional coronary flow following the block removal. On-transient exercise results reveal a rise in both cardiac output and mean ventricle pressure as expected. The stroke volume increases initially, but then declines during the latter period of HR rise, corresponding with one of the main physiological responses to exercise. The pressure-volume loop expands during exercise, as systolic pressure rises. The Myocardial oxygen demand increases during exercise and the coronary blood supply increases in response, causing an excess of oxygen supply to the heart. Off-transient exercise recovery is largely a reverse of this response, although the behaviour is slightly more varied, with sudden spikes in coronary resistance. Different levels of fitness and exercise intensity are tested and reveal that the stroke volume rises until a level of myocardial oxygen demand is reached at which point it declines. This level of demand is independent of fitness or exercise intensity. An advantage of our model is demonstrated in the correspondence between the micro and organ scale mechanics so that cellular pathologies can be traced from exercise performance with relatively little computational or experimental expense.

    Abstract In this work, we explore information geometry theoretic measures for characterizing neural information processing from EEG signals simulated by stochastic nonlinear coupled oscillator models for both healthy subjects and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients with both eyes-closed and eyes-open conditions. In particular, we employ information rates to quantify the time evolution of probability density functions of simulated EEG signals, and employ causal information rates to quantify one signal's instantaneous influence on another signal's information rate. These two measures help us find significant and interesting distinctions between healthy subjects and AD patients when they open or close their eyes. These distinctions may be further related to differences in neural information processing activities of the corresponding brain regions, and to differences in connectivities among these brain regions. Our results show that information rate and causal information rate are superior to their more traditional or established information-theoretic counterparts, i.e., differential entropy and transfer entropy, respectively. Since these novel, information geometry theoretic measures can be applied to experimental EEG signals in a model-free manner, and they are capable of quantifying non-stationary time-varying effects, nonlinearity, and non-Gaussian stochasticity presented in real-world EEG signals, we believe that they can form an important and powerful tool-set for both understanding neural information processing in the brain and the diagnosis of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease as presented in this work.
