Abstract This study explores Korean-American parents' perceptions on successful transition to kindergarten (TTK) for their child on the autism spectrum. It further examines challenges experienced during this process, and possible predictors for their challenges. Findings from an online survey (N = 212) indicate that participants consider their child's behavioral readiness and cooperation with teachers as the most important school readiness skills for successful TTK. They further consider building positive relationships with teachers and providing support at home as the most important support parents could provide during this process. Moreover, the child being a vocal communicator, higher income and parent's educational level were found to buffer against their reported challenges, while first-generation immigrant status and restrictive school placement were found to predict more challenges.

Abstract Lay abstract: Working memory is an important skill for school success, and it involves holding information in our memory while using it to solve complex problems at the same time. Autistic children often have difficulty with working memory. Because working memory development can be easily influenced by many factors from a young age, it is important to find factors that help with autistic children's development. This study tested the factors that are related to autistic children's working memory when they start kindergarten and the factors that can help with rapid improvement throughout their elementary school. We used a nationally representative data set that followed the same group of children from kindergarten to fifth grade. We found that autistic students from backgrounds with more resources and students with advanced learning approaches such as being organized, being excited to learn, and paying careful attention to their work, started school with strong working memory. Autistic students with advanced learning approaches continued to make rapid improvements during the first 3 years, and then their growth slowed down during the last 3 years. Autistic students who had a good relationship with their teachers made rapid improvements during the last 3 years of their elementary school. In addition, autistic children who struggled with working memory upon school entry were more likely to receive special education services at school. These findings suggest that we need effective ways to teach young autistic children important learning-related behaviors from a very young age through the school system, and teachers must prioritize building positive relationships with their students.

Abstract Purpose: The purse-string closure (PSC) method is used for skin closure after stoma reversal to reduce surgical site infections (SSIs). However, PSC requires a longer healing period than primary closure. The application of negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) may reduce the healing period of many wound types. This study aimed to investigate whether the application of NPWT promotes wound healing after the PSC method for stoma reversal.
Methods: This study was a randomized controlled study. Patients who had undergone stoma reversal surgery were randomized to receive NPWT or simple dressing after surgery. The primary outcome was a complete wound-healing period. We also investigated SSI, hospital stay, total cost, and the patient and observer scar assessment scale (POSAS) as secondary outcomes.
Results: A total of 36 patients were randomized into 2 groups. The median wound healing period was shorter in the NPWT group than in the control group (17.5 days [range, 11-24 days]
Conclusion: This study revealed that NPWT application after PSC for stoma reversal site is effective in reducing the wound healing period compared to simple dressing, without increasing SSI and total cost.

Abstract The soft structure of creatures without a rigid internal skeleton can easily adapt to any atypical environment. In the same context, robots with soft structures can change their shape to adapt to complex and varied surroundings. In this study, we introduce a caterpillar-inspired soft crawling robot with a fully soft body. The proposed crawling robot consists of soft modules based on an electrohydraulic actuator, a body frame, and contact pads. The modular robotic design produces deformations similar to the peristaltic crawling behavior of caterpillars. In this approach, the deformable body replicates the mechanism of the anchor movement of a caterpillar by sequentially varying the friction between the robot contact pads and the ground. The robot carries out forward movement by repeating the operation pattern. The robot has also been demonstrated to traverse slopes and narrow crevices.

Abstract Purpose: While working memory (WM) is a powerful predictor for children's school outcomes, autistic children are more likely to experience delays. This study compared autistic children and their neurotypical peers' WM development over their elementary school years, including relative growth and period of plasticity.
Methods: Using a nationally-representative dataset, latent growth models were built to examine periods of high plasticity and the relationship between children's performance upon school entry and their relative growth.
Results: While both groups made steeper gains during the early school years, autistic children's period of highest plasticity was prolonged by 1 year, which suggests a larger window for interventions. Further, autistic children who started kindergarten with poorer WM were more likely to make rapid growth during the last 3 years of elementary school, which is when their neurotypical peers' development started to plateau.
Conclusion: Findings should prompt various stakeholders to examine interventions and instructions to maximize autistic children's growth in WM. Further, the continued support and monitoring by educators throughout autistic children's late childhood can be particularly beneficial for the "late-bloomers."

Abstract The effectiveness of closed drainage tube insertion after low anterior resection has been controversial. We believe that drain tube displacement, which occurs up to 35% in real clinical practice, reduces the effectiveness of the drain tube. We report in this video a simple way to secure the drain tube in the pelvic cavity after low anterior resection and introduce a case that used the drain fixation method and treated anastomotic leakage without interventional procedure.

Abstract Purpose: Most patients with rectal cancer undergo a total mesorectal excision and a partial resection of the sigmoid colon to improve oncologic outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the distribution of lymph nodes (LNs) in rectal cancer.
Methods: The records of 54 patients with mid and low rectal cancer between April 2015 and March 2017 were reviewed, and 49 patients were enrolled in this study. All harvested LNs were analyzed according to the harvested area: the mesorectum area (MA), the vascular pedicle area (VA), and the sigmoid area (SA).
Results: Finally, 865 LNs were harvested from all patients, and of these, 71 (8.2%) showed metastases. In stage III patients, 343 LNs were harvested, and of these, 52 (15.2%) showed metastases. Significant differences were found in the total numbers of harvested LNs by area (P < 0.001) and in the numbers of harvested positive LNs by area (P < 0.001). In stage III patients, LNs from the MA were more frequently to be positive than were those from the VA (P < 0.001) or the SA (P < 0.001).
Conclusion: LN metastasis in the SA was rare. Therefore, resecting the mesorectum and the vascular pedicle may be more important than resecting the sigmoid mesentery due to concerns about LN metastases.

Abstract Background and Objectives: for isolated older adults, alternative training indoors to maintain balance is essential; however, related studies are lacking. To improve the balance of isolated older adults and reduce their fear of falling, we aimed to examine the balance−keeping effect of a virtual reality (VR) program and motor imagery training (MIT) and propose training that could improve physical activity among older adults. Methods: a total of 34 older adults admitted to a convalescent hospital were assessed. VR (n = 12) and MIT (n = 10) groups completed their assigned intervention in six weeks, whereas the control group (CG) (n = 12) did not. The follow−up was performed after two weeks. Results: in group × time interactions, body center movement area, open and closed eyes balance scores, and fall efficacy were significantly different (p < 0.05). In contrast with the VR group, the MIT group did not show a significant difference in the open or closed eyes balance scores depending on the period. However, there was a significant difference between the MIT group and CG in the open eyes balance score post-test (d = 1.13, 95% confidence interval, 0.40−12.33). Conclusions: we propose VR and MIT as training methods to prevent physical weakness in isolated older adults.

Abstract Background: It is essential to characterize communication patterns for better health outcomes for family caregivers and persons living with dementia.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationships between communication patterns and the characteristics of dyads of family caregivers and persons living with dementia.
Methods: A secondary analysis was conducted using 75 video-recorded home care observations from 19 dyads. Participant characteristics and caregiver burden, depression, and sense of competence were collected from the parent study. The video-recorded dyadic communication patterns were assessed using a coding scheme developed based on Communication Accommodation Theory and Classical Test Theory. The relative frequency of the communication patterns was compared between groups.
Results: Overall, 8311 caregiver and 8024 care recipient communication behaviors were observed. Caregiver communication patterns were categorized as facilitative, disabling, and neutral. Care recipient communication patterns were categorized as engaging, challenging, and neutral. Caregiver gender, care recipient gender, care recipient education level, dementia diagnosis length, types of dementia, dyadic gender difference, burden, depression, and competence of caregiver, and types of communication were significantly associated with caregiver communication. Dementia diagnosis length, caregiver competence, dyadic gender difference, and types of communication were significantly associated with care recipient communication.
Conclusions: The findings demonstrated different communication patterns depending on individual and dyad characteristics and evidence for dyadic communication support to promote meaningful interaction for persons living with dementia. Further analysis is needed to identify mediating factors and causal relationships.

Abstract Background and objectives: It is critical to use validated instruments to diagnose and manage chewing and swallowing problems of persons living with dementia. The study aimed to synthesize the characteristics and psychometric quality of instruments that assess the chewing and swallowing abilities of persons living with dementia.
Research design and methods: The systematic review was used to conduct this study. We searched 5 electric databases for records published from January 1, 1980, to July 8, 2022. Records were eligible if they included any instrument to assess chewing ability or swallowing ability in the dementia population. Eight characteristics of eligible instruments were extracted from the records: (1) development process, (2) operationalized concept/construct, (3) sample and setting, (4) administration method, (5) items, (6) scoring format/interpretation, (7) reliability, and (8) validity. The psychometric assessment for self-report and observational tool was used to evaluate 12 psychometric properties of eligible instruments.
Results: In total, 11,074 records were reviewed. Thirty-five eligible instruments, including observational tools, self-report questionnaires, and physiological instruments, were identified from 60 records. All 8 instruments assessing chewing ability were evaluated as having low psychometric quality, and only 3 out of 27 instruments assessing swallowing ability were evaluated as having moderate psychometric quality. Fifteen instruments were tested for only 1 type of psychometric property, limiting the overall evaluation of psychometric evidence.
Discussion and implications: The study findings inform the use and adaptation of appropriate instruments for practice and research. All existing instruments warrant further validation in larger samples to expand use in diverse care settings. This review described and evaluated current instruments measuring chewing and swallowing abilities and potential use in research and clinical practice to plan for and evaluate the effectiveness of mealtime and oral care practice and reduce health-related negative outcomes of persons living with dementia.
