Abstract Courts are key players in the dynamics of federal countries since their rulings have a direct impact on the ability of governments to centralize and decentralize power. Courts in Federal Countries examines the role high courts play in thirteen countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Nigeria, Spain, and the United States. The volume's contributors analyse the centralizing or decentralizing forces at play following a court's ruling on issues such as individual rights, economic affairs, social issues, and other matters. The thirteen substantive chapters have been written to facilitate comparability between the countries. Each chapter outlines a country's federal system, explains the constitutional and institutional status of the court system, and discusses the high court's jurisprudence in light of these features. Courts in Federal Countries offers insightful explanations of judicial behaviour in the world's leading federations

Abstract This chapter covers the electrodiagnostic (EDX) evaluation of upper extremity nerves and the brachial plexus. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common peripheral nerve disorder of the upper extremity. A number of techniques are used but there is no gold standard approach for its diagnosis. Needle EMG aids in the differentiation of proximal and distal median neuropathies. Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and ulnar neuropathy at or distal to the wrist can be distinguished by EDX techniques. Radial neuropathy at the spiral groove has a specific EDX pattern. EDX assessment of proximal upper extremity nerve lesions such as brachial plexopathy is a valuable tool for exploring the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of this complex disorder.

Abstract Nerve conduction studies are a key component of the electrophysiologic evaluation of the peripheral nerve system, and provide important information about the integrity of the large, myelinated axons, neuromuscular junctions, and muscle. Nerve conduction studies involve eliciting nerve action potentials at sites along a peripheral nerve and recording the response from another site along the nerve or from a muscle innervated by that nerve. Attention to details of test performance, use of well-established normative values, and knowledge of the patterns of abnormality produced by disorders that affect neuronal, axonal, and myelin sheath function are fundamental for proper interpretation of results.

Abstract Purpose of review: This article provides core information on the clinical neurophysiology techniques available for the investigation of disorders of the peripheral nervous system.
Recent findings: The role of small fiber dysfunction in some types of polyneuropathy is being increasingly appreciated, and neurophysiologic techniques for evaluating the autonomic components of peripheral axons have enhanced our understanding of small fiber dysfunction.
Summary: The principles of nerve conduction studies and needle EMG are presented in this article, along with the patterns of abnormality encountered in patients with polyneuropathy due to large and small fiber involvement.

Abstract Impact statement: NAD is a central metabolite connecting energy balance and organismal growth with genomic integrity and function. It is involved in the development of malignancy and has a regulatory role in the aging process. These processes are mediated by a diverse series of enzymes whose common focus is either NAD's biosynthesis or its utilization as a redox cofactor or enzyme substrate. These enzymes include dehydrogenases, cyclic ADP-ribose hydrolases, mono(ADP-ribosyl)transferases, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases, and sirtuin deacetylases. This article describes the manifold pathways that comprise NAD metabolism and promotes an increased awareness of how perturbations in these systems may be important in disease prevention and/or progression.

Abstract Bacterial impairment of freshwater systems is a commonly studied global problem. However, studies on the relative distribution of bacterial pathogens in different impaired aquatic systems have been limited. Frequently, impaired freshwater systems are classified by the presence of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) and the identification of sources of fecal contamination through microbial source tracking. In this study, we assessed the relative abundance of DNA sequences related to potential human bacterial pathogens along with human fecal indicator bacteria in three impaired watersheds. These watersheds consistently showed a high abundance of FIB for the past several years. Using Illumina paired-end DNA sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons, we observed variation in the relative distribution of DNA sequences related to Legionellaceae, Enterobacteriaceae and Bacteroidaceae families across different sites. We identified potential hotspots sites in these impaired water systems, which showed a relatively high abundance of pathogen-related DNA sequences. This study demonstrates the significance of Next-Gen DNA sequencing for the initial screening of waterborne pathogens and the identification of high-risk sites for preferential remediation efforts in impaired water systems. Secondly, the frequent temporal monitoring of specifically identified pathogens that are in high abundance in a watershed can help in the accurate prediction and prevention of disease outbreaks.
