Abstract Curative therapies are most successful when cancer is diagnosed and treated at an early stage. We advocate that technological advances in next-generation sequencing of circulating, tumor-derived nucleic acids hold promise for addressing the challenge of developing safe and effective cancer screening tests.

Abstract (CIT): The explosion of technologies that allow us to measure many thousands of data points simultaneously has created new research tools and has been very much at the heart of the new systems biology. These technologies have had a huge impact in discovery and offer great promise in the potential of next generation diagnostics, biomarkers, and drug discovery and personalized medicine. Despite the promise, the translation of these technologies into clinically useful tools has been disappointingly slow. This gap between research tools and clinical tools is the basis for my talk and I will explore one example of how the gap has been breached in oncology molecular diagnostics and explore the lessons therein.

Abstract In part 1, Richard Klausner, director of the National Cancer Institute, gives the keynote address. He discusses the study of metastases or how cancer progresses. He notes the complexity and contextual issues. He also defines cancer as the accumulation of genetic changes, and as genetic and genomic instability. He speaks for 50 minutes. Dr. Phillip Sharp, MIT, moderator of the first session, introduces Richard Hynes, MIT, whose title is "Cell adhesion changes and invasion of metastases." Dr. Hynes uses slides, speaks for 25 minutes, and answers questions for about 8 minutes at the beginning of part 2. Next, Dr. Peter Herrlich, University of Karlsruhe, Germany, speaks on "Two sides of one in the same molecule CD44: metastases promotion and suppression." Dr. Herrlich speaks for 32 minutes and takes questions for about 5 minutes. In part 3, Edward Harlow, Harvard, moderates the second session and introduces Erkki Ruoslahti, Burnham Institute. Dr. Ruoslahti's topic is "Vascular addresses in metastases and experimental tumor models". He speaks for 40 minutes and takes questions for 7 minutes. The next speaker is Ajit Varki, University of California, San Diego. His topic is cell surfaces and metastases during which he discusses glycans. Dr. Varki speaks for 22 minutes and answers questions for 3 minutes. In part 4, Victor Ling, British Columbia Cancer Research Center, moderates the session and introduces Kari Alitalo, Haartman Institute at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Alitalo's topic is lymph angiogenesis and metastasis. He speaks for about 37 minutes and answers questions for about 2 minutes. The final speaker is Dr. Judah Folkman, Harvard University. The title of his presentation is "New directions in angiogenesis research." He speaks for 22 minutes and answers questions for about 2 minutes. All the speakers illustrated their talks.
