    Abstract Electrons on the helium surface display sharp resonant absorption lines related to the transitions between the subbands of quantized motion transverse to the surface. A magnetic field parallel to the surface strongly affects the absorption spectrum. We show that the effect results from admixing the intersubband transitions to the in-plane quantum dynamics of the strongly correlated electron liquid or a Wigner crystal. This is similar to the admixing of electron transitions in color centers to phonons. The spectrum permits a direct characterization of the many-electron dynamics and also enables testing the theory of color centers in a system with controllable coupling.

    Abstract The data on association between various pathologies of the ENT organs and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is analysed in the article. The variety of extraesophageal signs of GERD in children and adults is given, what is advisable to inform physicians of different specialties about the possibilities of antireflux therapy. These options are expanded with the emergence of a unique new drug, Alfasoxx. Its bioadhesive formula is based on hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulphate thereby protecting the esophageal mucosa. Alfasoxx acts on the surface of the esophageal mucosa without penetrating into the systemic bloodstream and it also has a low allergenic potential, which has been confirmed by numerous studies. With its healing and repairing effect on erosive lesions of the esophageal epithelium, Alfasoxx in combination with proton pump inhibitors is more effective in achieving regression of clinical manifestations of the disease and improving patients quality of life (according to SF-36 questionnaire) compared to proton pump inhibitors monotherapy.

    Abstract The polarization dependence of the photoconductivity response at cyclotron-resonance harmonics in a nondegenerate two-dimensional (2D) electron system formed on the surface of liquid helium is studied using a setup in which a circular polarization of opposite directions can be produced. Contrary to the results of similar investigations reported for semiconductor 2D electron systems, for electrons on liquid helium, a strong dependence of the amplitude of magnetoconductivity oscillations on the direction of circular polarization is observed. This observation is in accordance with theoretical models based on photon-assisted scattering, and, therefore, it presents a principal argument in the dispute over the origin of microwave-induced conductivity oscillations.

    Abstract We report the first direct observation of the decay of the excited-state population in electrons trapped on the surface of liquid helium. The relaxation dynamics, which are governed by inelastic scattering processes in the system, are probed by the real-time response of the electrons to a pulsed microwave excitation. Comparison with theoretical calculations allows us to establish the dominant mechanisms of inelastic scattering for different temperatures. The longest measured relaxation time is around 1  μs at the lowest temperature of 135 mK, which is determined by the inelastic scattering due to the spontaneous two-ripplon emission process. Furthermore, the image-charge response shortly after applying microwave radiation reveals interesting population dynamics due to the multisubband structure of the system.

    Abstract We investigate the coupling between Rydberg states of electrons trapped on a liquid helium surface and Landau levels induced by a perpendicular magnetic field. We show that this realizes a prototype quantum system equivalent to an atom in a cavity, where their coupling strength can be tuned by a parallel magnetic field. We determine experimentally the renormalization of the atomic transition energies induced by the coupling to the cavity, which can be seen as an analog of the Lamb shift. When the coupling is sufficiently strong, the transition between the ground and first excited Rydberg states splits into two resonances corresponding to dressed states with vacuum and one photon in the cavity. Our results are in quantitative agreement with the energy shifts predicted by the effective atom in a cavity model where all parameters are known with high accuracy.

    Abstract We study the transport of surface electrons on superfluid helium through a microchannel structure in which the charge flow splits into two branches, one flowing straight and one turned at 90°. According to Ohm's law, an equal number of charges should flow into each branch. However, when the electrons are dressed by surface excitations (ripplons) to form polaronlike particles with sufficiently large effective mass, all the charge follows the straight path due to momentum conservation. This surface-wave induced transport is analogous to the motion of electrons coupled to surface acoustic waves in semiconductor 2DEGs.

    Abstract We report on the direct observation of the thermoelectric transport in a nondegenerate electron system trapped on the surface of liquid helium. The microwave-induced excitation of the vertical transitions of electrons between the surface-bound states results in their lateral flow, which we were able to detect by employing a segmented electrode configuration. We show that this flow of electrons arises due to the Seebeck effect. Our experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations based on kinetic equations. This demonstrates the importance of the fast electron-electron collisions, which, in particular, leads to the violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in this system.

    Abstract We study the shift of the energy levels of electrons on a helium surface due to the coupling to the quantum field of surface vibrations. As in quantum electrodynamics, the coupling is known, and it is known to lead to an ultraviolet divergence of the level shifts. We show that there are diverging terms of different nature and use the Bethe-type approach to show that they cancel each other, to leading order. This resolves the long-standing theoretical controversy and explains the existing experiments. The results allow us to study the temperature dependence of the level shift. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental data, with no adjustable parameters.

    Abstract In the weak ferromagnetic MnCO_{3} system, a low-frequency collective spin excitation (magnon) is the hybridized oscillation of nuclear and electron spins coupled through the hyperfine interaction. By using a split-ring resonator, we performed transmission spectroscopy measurements of the MnCO_{3} system and observed avoided crossing between the hybridized nuclear magnon mode and the resonator mode in the NMR-frequency range. The splitting strength is quite large due to the large spin density of ^{55}Mn, and the cooperativity value C=0.2 (the magnon-photon coupling parameter) is close to the conditions of strong coupling. The results reveal a new class of spin systems, in which the coupling between nuclear spins and photons is mediated by electron spins via the hyperfine interaction.

    Abstract We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new spectroscopic method, image-charge detection, for the Rydberg states of surface electrons on liquid helium. The excitation of the Rydberg states of the electrons induces an image current in the circuit to which the electrons are capacitively coupled. In contrast to the conventional microwave absorption measurement, this method makes it possible to resolve the transitions to high-lying Rydberg states of the surface electrons. We also show that this method can potentially be used to detect quantum states of a single electron, which would pave a way to utilize the quantum states of the surface electrons on liquid helium for quantum computing.
