Abstract The use of repellents is a unique measure of personal protection, which can avoid tick attachment and thus reduce the risk of tick-borne infections. In the European Union, the efficacy of the repellents coming onto the market has to be evaluated according to the guidelines published by the European Chemical Agency before registration. The United States Environmental Protection Agency has a similar role. Despite obvious differences in morphology and behavior, both these guidelines allow the use of nymph or adult female ticks for laboratory testing. Here, we provide evidence that sensitivity to diethyltoluamide (deet) (

Abstract While terminal palliative care focuses primarily on the management of symptoms of immediate dying, early palliative care provides an opportunity for the patient and his loved ones to understand the trajectory of the illness, to receive support for coping with the diagnosis, increase the quality of decision-making to match the patients values and preferences. The emphasis is on realistic expectations of the outcome of treatment and timely anticipation of further disease course. The paper focuses on an overview of the evidence of palliative and supportive interventions, comparing the different trigger mechanisms for palliative intervention and presents the content of the intervention of the palliative team. The establishment and integration of the consultative palliative team in the tertiary hospital is described. An illustrative care report describes the goals of care conversation and its impact on advance care planning. Palliative care is widely accepted and recommended standard of high quality care for seriously ill patients. In the Czech Republic, it is necessary to extend its availability for patients hospitalized in acute care setting.

Abstract This study evaluated the repellent effect of three essential oils against females of Ixodes ricinus, which is considered to be the main arthropod disease vector in Europe. The essential oils could be regarded as user- and environment-friendly alternatives to synthetic repellents. As a comparison sample, the most widely used synthetic repellent DEET was used. All the tested oils exhibited moderate to high initial repellency of 65-85% 5 min after application. The testing was terminated after 80 min, when lavender and eucalyptus repelled 45% and 15% of ticks, respectively. No effect of orange oil was observed after a 20-min mark. The effect of DEET was found to be high and stable (95-100%) throughout the experiment. This study thus revealed that the investigated oils are not as effective as DEET. On the other hand, especially lavender showed an interesting potential as an alternative repellent for outdoor activities of shorter duration.

Title translation NK cells, chemokines and chemokine receptors.
Abstract NK cells are an important component of natural immunity, which provides a defence response against viruses, bacterial and parasitic intracellular pathogens and tumour cells. NK cells are capable of rapid responses without prior sensitization and cytotoxic response is independent of the presence of the antigens of the major histocompatibility system. NK cells produce a number of cytokines (e.g. INF-gamma, GM-CSF and TNF-beta) and chemokines and in this way they regulate both the natural and acquired immune response. By contrast, NK cells are regulated both positively and negatively by cytokines and chemokines produced by other immune cells. Attention is focused on the possibility of influencing the tumour process by using cytokine- and chemokine-activated NK cells. In studies in mice models as well as in several clinical trials, it has been shown that the presence of cytotoxic cells in tumour stroma is associated with a more favourable prognosis of cancer. There is also plenty of evidence that in tumour stroma a number of cytokines and chemokines are produced which may have ambivalent effects.

Title translation Perioperative palliative care: the role of multidisciplinary consult team in perioperative period and intensive care setting.
Abstract Palliative care is an important constituent of widely accepted quality care standard in seriously ill patients. The needs of these patients in perioperative setting or in intensive care are considerable for attending teams. Principal issues discussed include excellent communication skills during decision making before a high-risk surgery, and risk-benefit weighting in order to respect patients values and preferences. This article, based on examples of interventions in both perioperative care and in intensive care units, aims to demonstrate a complex integrated palliative approach.

Abstract The import of aquarium animals has been increasing worldwide in recent years. Despite its contribution to world trade and the economy, this trade also comprises one of the main pathways for the introduction of non-indigenous animals. In the past decade, crayfish has become a popular pet as well as a potential threat to the environment upon its escape or release. Since the Czech Republic is one of the world’s leading importer, exporter, and producer of aquatic ornamental animals, we prepared a detailed analysis of crayfish imports. The present paper provides a complete list of countries supplying ornamental crayfish and examines trends of their prices and imported quantities during the past decade (2003–2012). Indonesia has been identified as the leading supplier in recent years. The annual average price of imported crayfish has varied over the evaluated period within the range of €0.76–4.72 per individual and it is rising annually by €0.15. The quantity of live crayfish imported for aquarium purposes has not been affected significantly by the price per individual and it has grown rapidly. Therefore a constant monitoring of this pet trade sector is strongly recommended for the future.

Title translation Adverse effects of modern treatment of malignant melanoma and their treatment/ management.
Abstract Background: Malignant melanoma belongs to the most deadly human tumours and despite all preventive programs its incidence continues to rise. Until 2011, chemotherapy was the only therapeutic option for inoperable or metastatic disease in the Czech Republic. However, new treatment modalities (e. g. targeted therapy) have been introduced recently.
Aim: Since most of the modern drugs are still available only in clinical trials, the aim of this article is to provide a brief and comprehensive review of current treatment options for metastatic disease. The attention is focused on their potential side effects, so that doctors who do not usually deal with these drugs would get acquainted with them. This could contribute to a prompt management of associated symptoms or an early referral of the patient to an appropriate clinical centre without undue delay.

Abstract This study evaluated the burdens of parasitic protozoans and helminths in dairy goats in two types of farming system in the Czech Republic. We examined nearly 660 faecal samples collected at 14 conventional and 14 organic farms. All farms tested positive for Eimeria oocysts and strongyle-type eggs. The output of coccidial oocysts was highest (86 880 oocysts per gramme - OPG) at an conventional farm, whereas the shedding of nematode strongylid eggs was highest (7400 eggs per gramme - EPG) at an organic farm. The intensities of coccidial and strongylid infections, however, did not differ significantly between conventional and organic farms during our survey. Eimeria arloingi, E. alijevi, and E. ninakohlyakimovae were the most prevalent coccidial species. Trichostrongylus/Teladorsagia sp. and Haemonchus contortus were the most prevalent gastrointestinal nematodes, and Muellerius capillaris was the most common lungworm at farms of both types. Eggs of the tapeworm Moniezia were also identified, with prevalences of 14% at conventional farms and 43% at farms applying alternative agricultural practices. Intensity of tapeworm infections was significantly higher (p = 0.02) at organic farms (maximum EPG of 1580) than conventional farms (maximum EPG of 60). Trematodes were not detected at any of the farms. The intensity of most prevalent endoparasitic infections did not differ significantly between the farm types probably due to their similar practices of grazing management and drenching frequency of antiparasitic drugs.

Abstract Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most frequent clinically manifested primary immunodeficiency. According to clinical and laboratory findings, CVID is a heterogeneous group of diseases. Recently, the defects of molecules regulating activation and terminal differentiation of B lymphocytes have been described in some patients with CVID. In this study, we show the overview of deficiencies of inducible costimulator, transmembrane activator and calcium-modulator and cytophilin ligand interactor, CD19 molecules, their genetic basis, pathogenesis and clinical manifestations.

Abstract This study evaluated patterns and species composition of parasitic infections detected over a 1-year period at an organic goat farm. As a result of coprological examination, the overall prevalence of observed strongylids (99%), coccidia of the genus Eimeria (98%), and Muellerius capillaris lungworms (93%) was calculated. The most prevalent strongylids recovered from incubated fecal samples were Haemonchus contortus (42%), genera Trichostrongylus (23%), Oesophagostomum columbianum (13%), and Teladorsagia circumcincta (11%). A maximum intensity of coccidia infection 5150 oocysts per gram, strongylids infection 9900 eggs per gram and lungworm infection 867.26 larvae per gram were detected. The various effects (including environment, host, and parasites) on milk yield, lactose, protein, and fat were evaluated using generalized linear mixed models. Milk yield (P < 0.0001), milk fat (P < 0.01), and lactose (P < 0.0001) were affected by month, i.e., these parameters were influenced by the month of the year, regardless of the individual goat. With the intensity of infection detected in our study, only protein content was affected (P < 0.01) by parasitic infection (exclusively caused by strongylids). Correlation between measurements from one individual revealed that the goat itself can substantially decrease protein content but has much less of an effect on fat, milk yield, and lactose. Based on our results, we can conclude that a low intensity of parasitic infections does not significantly affect milk yield and the qualitative parameters of milk.
