Abstract Adolescents are exposed to food marketing through many routes, including television, movies, videos, print media, online games, and social media. The interplay between exposure to unhealthy food advertisements and food choices by adolescents is a field of special interest given the ongoing evolution of social media trends and marketing strategies. The purpose of this review was to synthesize the scientific findings in the last five years (2017-2022) regarding the possible influence of nutrition-related advertisements through television, social media, or video games on the choice and consumption of unhealthy foods and drinks in adolescents. Nineteen studies were included in this review. Adolescents exposed to unhealthy food and beverage advertising showed high desire and intention to consume the advertised foods, as evidenced by the majority of included studies. The effects of advertisements are reinforced by peer pressure and influencers and interact with socioeconomic, biological, and environmental factors. Food marketing represents part of the obesogenic environment of the present time.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the effect of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiation on bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) occurrence (overall; chlamydia; gonorrhea; syphilis), in MSM.
    Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
Methods: Systematic searches were performed in PubMed, Embase, and Scopus without language restrictions until 1 February 2023. We sought studies reporting data for the estimation of incidence rate ratios (IRR), prevalence ratios or cumulative incidence ratios (the latter in equal time periods before and after PrEP initiation) regarding bacterial STI occurrence. Separate analyses were performed overall for any STI, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea (overall; rectal; urethral; pharyngeal for the two latter conditions); ratios greater than unity denoted increase in STI occurrence after PrEP initiation.
Results: Twenty-three eligible studies with 11 776 participants (age range: 18-71 years) with a median follow-up of 12 months were included. Overall, PrEP initiation was associated with a significant increase in the occurrence of any STI (pooled effect size: 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04-1.26), any gonorrhea (pooled effect size: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.02-1.34), any chlamydia (pooled effect size: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.09-1.58) and rectal chlamydia (pooled effect size: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.05-1.64), whereas a borderline increase was found in urethral chlamydia (pooled effect size: 1.25, 95% CI: 0.99-1.60, P  = 0.064). Changes in pharyngeal chlamydia and site-specific gonorrhea occurrence did not reach statistical significance. Syphilis showed virtually no change after PrEP initiation (pooled effect size: 0.99, 95% CI: 0.72-1.37).
Conclusion: These results highlight the need for more comprehensive, accessible STI testing to tackle bacterial STI infections in PrEP users.

Abstract Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate associations between death and sociodemographic and clinical determinants in a neonatal ICU (NICU) in Athens, Greece, by means of a case-control study.
Methods: The study was conducted between January 2013 and October 2017 at the NICU of "Panayiotis & Aglaia Kyriakou" Children's Hospital in Athens, Greece. The NICU subjects that died (case group) during this period (n=49) were compared with a control group of 451 NICU-admitted subjects who survived, during the same period. Potential determinants of mortality were assessed; univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed; odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated.
Results: Gestational age less than 32 weeks (adjusted OR=4.59, 95%CI: 2.09-10.10), low birth weight (adjusted OR=3.14, 95%CI: 1.43-6.91), emergency transfer (adjusted OR=11.92, 95%CI: 1.57-90.60), cyanosis (adjusted OR=5.20, 95%CI: 2.25-12.01), perinatal asphyxia (adjusted OR=6.96, 95%CI: 3.07-15.75), necrotizing enterocolitis (adjusted OR=3.21, 95%CI: 1.03-9.99), need for oxygen supply, and incubator use emerged as independent predictors of mortality.
Conclusion: Extreme prematurity, low birth weight, necrotizing enterocolitis, and emergency conditions are associated with mortality, despite progress made in the field of neonatal intensive care.

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate and present time trends in births in Greece over the last seven decades. Methods Data on live births were derived from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, covering a 72-year period from 1950 to 2021. Trends in the number of births were assessed using joinpoint regression analysis. The annual percentage change (APC) and the average annual percent change (AAPC) were calculated with a 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and level of statistical significance p<0.05. Results The overall trend during 1950-2021 was clearly downward (AAPC = -0.9, 95% CI: -1.2 to -0.7). Over the first three decades, births fluctuated to a record high of 162,839 in 1967, with an overall slight downward trend (1950-1981: APC = -0.2, 95% CI: -0.4 to -0.1, p<0.001). During the 1980 decade, the trend was sharply downward (1981-1988: APC = -4.7, 95% CI: -6.2 to -3.2, p<0.001), followed by a stabilization in the 1990s (1988-2001: APC = -0.1, 95% CI: -0.7 to 0.4, p=0.586). The first decade of the 21st century was the only period during the last seven decades with an increasing trend in births in the Greek population (2001-2008: APC = 1.9, 95% CI: 0.3 to 3.5, p = 0.021), but it was followed by plummeting trends during the recent years (2008-2021: APC = -2.7, 95% CI: -3.2 to -2.3, p<0.001), leading to the historic low of 83,756 births in 2019. Conclusion The time trend analysis of births in Greece indicated a dramatic plummet in natality in Greece, predominantly attributed to the large decline in births in the 1980s, which could not be reversed in the 1990s and 2000s. The recent decrease in births was associated with the financial recession and has put the Greek population in a disastrous low-fertility spiral.

Abstract There is a lack of a national organized screening program for colorectal cancer in Greece, and asymptomatic detection is usually the result of individual decisions. The collection of epidemiologic endoscopic data from a population of interest would therefore provide valuable information for future treatment guidance, especially during periods of economic austerity. The current cross-sectional study included 380 asymptomatic, average risk individuals undergoing screening colonoscopy for the first time, during the period of one year in a tertiary public hospital in Athens. Descriptive and analytic epidemiologic data were analyzed. The prevalence of adenomas and advanced lesions were compared between the younger and older cohort, and a regression model was applied for risk evaluation. The mean age of participants was 63 years, and 53% were male. A significant proportion of patients presented with polyps (51.5%) and 25% of them had lesions in the proximal colon. The prevalence of adenomas and advanced adenomas was 29.5 and 11.8%, respectively. Similar high prevalence rates of lesions were identified in the cohort of individuals <50 years of age and the older cohort (>50 years of age). Regression models identified age, number and size of polyps as the major risk factors for the detection of adenomas. The increase of advanced lesions in the older and younger cohort requires confirmation by larger studies. Overall, the results of the present study indicate the requirement for a well-organized screening colonoscopy program starting from as early as 40 years of age. This program may confer an additional endoscopic burden with socioeconomic consequences in a country with limited health resources.
