Abstract In this study, we have used Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) for surface topographic characterization of the optical storage devices. Optical storage devices like Compact Discs (CDs) and Digital Versatile discs (DVDs) are used worldwide for memory storage, grating, sensing and spectroscopy applications. These devices can store the information in binary form on a spiral track in the data recording layer. We demonstrate that these data tracks can be characterized through DHM and one can decode the binary data in transmission mode. The experimental results are shown for blank (without data) and burned (with data) areas of CDs and DVDs. The average width of the CD and DVD data track is experimentally found to be 600 ± 30 nm & 230 ± 20 nm, respectively and the thickness of the data recording track is obtained as 80 ± 10 nm. The obtained results are verified by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) measurements and found a very close agreement between the two results. In addition, the proposed method can also be used for manufacturing defect identification and measurement.

Abstract Herein, we report for the first time a highly emissive higher-order assembled structure of BSA-Au NCs in the presence of cucurbit[7]uril, which enhances the absolute fluorescence quantum yield of BSA-Au NCs up to 40%. Cucurbit[7]uril neutralizes the surface charge of BSA-Au NCs, and hence aggregation happens. This aggregation shows reversible disaggregation in the presence of adamantylamine.

Abstract By offering a wide license-free spectrum, visible light communication (VLC) has emerged as a game-changing technology for networks beyond 5G. In this study, the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology is combined with a non-orthogonal multiple access VLC (NOMA-VLC) system to provide a reliable error-free high data rate network for multi-user scenarios. Abstract The paper examines the dynamics of rural electrification in India and explores the transition to a complementary convergence of decentralised and centralised electricity systems for sustainable rural electricity services. A novel socio-technical framework of analysis for assessment of cases of rural electricity systems is developed and applied in Indian villages to explore the interplays of different elements of rural electricity systems, enabling and hindering factors, and actors and institutions that affect the governance and sustenance of rural electrification. A mixed research method, along with document analysis, was applied to study the socio-technical perspectives, using 21 indicators representing nine different interplays of elements of rural electricity systems. The analysis reveals there is a significant effect of governance on technology performance, which in turn affects customer practices. There is also a significant correlation between customer practices and governance. Policy enablers along with strong institutions and actors - both at the subnational and local level - are key drivers to effective governance. Furthermore, irrespective of centralised or decentralised technology, adequacy and reliability of electricity supply and effective customer service delivery at the local level are important i.e., both supply reliability and quality, and customer service quality are equally important. The findings have clear policy implications for the governance of the electricity sector in India.

Abstract Since energy-related carbon dioxide emissions represent two-thirds of all greenhouse gases, a transition towards cleaner and renewable energy is imperative. Moreover, the carbon neutrality targets set by countries hinge upon increased uptake of renewable energy and storage. Some of these energy transition (ET) interventions are highly mineral intensive and depend upon critical minerals (CM), which are scarce and face supply challenges. However, what is meant by ‘critical’ is not uniform and static. The interface between ET and minerals is still an emerging area in policy studies literature. This paper presents a systematic and comprehensive review of 68 studies from a policy perspective studying the critical minerals – ET nexus. Most literature has approached the issue from the perspective of economics or geopolitics, followed by a broad governance approach. Very little attention has been given to legal and institutional aspects and justice in particular. The review suggests that the main challenges associated with the subject relate to the criticality of minerals, raw material security, trade and geopolitics, circular economy strategies, environmental and social impacts, and energy justice.
