Abstract "The disastrous effects of floods in urban areas of various Indian cities have been increasing in severity and extent over the past decade. This book explores flood disasters, their impact in the world and the Indian context, assessing vulnerability and risks involved, and systematic use of GIS-enabled platforms to map mitigation measures sustainably, with special reference to the metropolitan flood mitigation endeavours. This book balances the theoretical with empirical approaches to makes unique standpoint on the various challenges and possible solutions to urban flooding in India. Through a study of major urban flood incidents, this book analyses the factors which contribute to the rising risk of flooding with increasing urbanization, population dynamics, growth, and urban sprawl, with particular focus to the cities of Chennai, Mumbai, and Hyderabad in India. It also examines disaster governance on urban floods and legislative prospects of flood disasters through discussions on standing acts, the UN directives, and internationally adopted practices and actions, which are applicable in the Indian context. An interdisciplinary study, this book brings together tools and research from various disciplines including geography, urban and regional planning, and GIS. It will be an invaluable resource for researchers, scholars, engineers, students, planners, academicians, and professionals of cross disciplines to help them resolve the problem of urban flooding. It will also be of interest to the general reader seeking to learn more about disasters, urban flooding, engineering, and GIS"--

Abstract Large ungulates in tropical forests are among the most threatened taxa of mammals. Excessive hunting, degradation of and encroachments on their natural habitats by humans have contributed to drastic reductions in wild ungulate populations in recent decades. As such, reliable assessments of ungulate-habitat relationships and the spatial dynamics of their populations are urgently needed to provide a scientific basis for conservation efforts. However, such rigorous assessments are methodologically complex and logistically difficult, and consequently many commonly used ungulate population survey methods do not address key problems. As a result of such deficiencies, key parameters related to population distribution, abundance, habitat ecology and management of tropical forest ungulates remain poorly understood. This book addresses this critical knowledge gap by examining how population abundance patterns in five threatened species of large ungulates vary across space in the tropical forests of the Nagarahole-Bandipur reserves in southwestern India. It also explains the development and application of an innovative methodology – spatially explicit line transect sampling – based on an advanced hierarchical modelling under the Bayesian inferential framework, which overcomes common methodological deficiencies in current ungulate surveys. The methods and results presented provide valuable reference material for researchers and professionals involved in studying and managing wild ungulate populations around the globe. .

Abstract Ion recognition in porous aqueous media utilizing polyethers involves the formation of 1 : 1 and higher-order host-guest complexes. The effectiveness of these interactions relies on the optimal size of the host cavity to encapsulate the guest ions. While liquid/liquid extraction based on host-guest interactions offers higher specificity in metal ion extraction, it results in the co-extraction of unwanted coordinating solvents and counter-anions. Therefore, an improved protocol is required by which the ion can be selectively trapped within the host cavity and simultaneously decrease the guest coordination with the outside environment. This study delves into the microscopic mechanisms underpinning the exclusive ion recognition through the formation of 2 : 1 host-guest sandwich complexes, which reduce metal coordination with solvent or counter-ions, ensuring selectivity. Our analysis shows that ions with a radius larger than the host cavity, such as cesium (Cs

Abstract Objective: This article reviews the etiologies, presentations, and management of neuropathies related to nutritional deficiencies.
Latest developments: Peripheral neuropathy can be the predominant or only manifestation of certain nutrient deficiencies. Cognitive difficulties or involvement of other parts of the central nervous system, such as the optic nerve and spinal cord, may accompany nutritional peripheral neuropathies. In most patients, the nutritional deficiency may have a single predominant cause, but in some cases, multiple causes may coexist. Obesity, for unclear reasons, can be associated with nutrient deficiencies. The rising rates of bariatric surgery and the incidence of nutrient deficiencies following bariatric surgery make this a particularly relevant topic for neurologists.
Essential points: Neuropathies caused by nutrient deficiencies are preventable with appropriate supplementation in high-risk situations. Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential to ensure an optimal outcome and minimize neurologic morbidity.
