    Abstract Cereblon (CRBN) is a component of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex that plays crucial roles in various cellular processes. However, no systematic studies on the expression and functions of CRBN in solid tumors have been conducted to date. Here, we analyzed CRBN expression and its clinical value using several bioinformatic databases. CRBN mRNA expression was downregulated in various cancer types compared to normal cells. Survival analysis demonstrated that overall survival was significantly positively correlated with CRBN expression in some cancer types including lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), and skin cutaneous melanoma (SKCM). CRBN expression was downregulated regardless of clinicopathological characteristics in LUAD and KIRC. Analysis of genes that are commonly correlated with CRBN expression among KIRC, LUAD, and SKCM samples elucidated the potential CRBN-associated mechanisms of cancer progression. Overall, this study revealed the prognostic value of CRBN and its potential associated mechanisms, which may facilitate the development of anti-cancer therapeutic agents.

    Abstract Abstract Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) show several limitations, such as high flammability and Li dendrite growth. All‐solid‐state LMBs (ASSLMBs) are promising alternatives to conventional liquid electrolyte (LE)‐based LMBs. However, it is challenging to prepare a solid electrolyte with both high ionic conductivity and low electrode–electrolyte interfacial resistance. In this study, to overcome these problems, a solid composite electrolyte (SCE) consisting of Li6.25La3Zr2Al0.25O12 and polyvinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene is used, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years as a solid‐state electrolyte. To operate LMBs without an LE, optimization of the electrode–solid‐electrolyte interface is crucial. To achieve this, physical and chemical treatments are performed, i.e., direct growth of each layer by drop casting and thermal evaporation, and plasma treatment before the Li evaporation process, respectively. The optimized ASSLMB (amorphous V2O5−x (1 µm)/SCE (30 µm)/Li film (10 µm)) has a high discharge capacity of 136.13 mAh g−1 (at 50 °C and 5 C), which is 90% of that of an LMB with an LE. It also shows good cycling performance (>99%) over 1000 cycles. Thus, the proposed design minimizes the electrode–solid‐electrolyte interfacial resistance, and is expected to be suitable for integration with existing commercial processes.

    Abstract Objectives: To study the transverse widths of maxilla and mandible and their relationship with the inclination of first molars. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six untreated adults (12 males, 44 females) with normal occlusion were included. On each Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) image of the subject, inter-buccal and inter-lingual bone widths were measured at the levels of hard palate, alveolar crest and furcation of the first molars, and maxillomandibular width differentials were calculated. In addition, the buccolingual inclination of each first molar was measured and its correlation with the maxillomandibular width differential was tested. Results: At the furcation level of the first molar, the maxillary inter-buccal bone width was more than the mandibular inter-buccal bone width by 1.1 ± 4.5 mm for males and 1.6 ± 2.9 mm for females; the mandibular inter-lingual bone width was more than the maxillary inter-lingual bone width by 1.3 ± 3.6 mm for males and 0.3 ± 3.2 mm for females. For females, there was a negative correlation between the maxillomandibular inter-lingual bone differential and maxillary first molar buccal inclination ( p < 0.05), and a positive correlation between the maxillomandibular inter-lingual bone differential and mandibular first molar lingual inclination ( p < 0.05). Conclusions: This is a randomized clinical study on transverse analysis of maxilla and mandible in adults with normal occlusion using CBCTs. On average: (1) At the furcation level of the first molars, the maxillary inter-buccal bone width was slightly wider than mandibular inter-buccal bone width; whereas the mandibular inter-lingual bone width was slightly wider than maxillary inter-lingual bone width; (2) A statistically significant correlation existed between the maxillomandibular transverse skeletal differentials and molar inclinations.

    Abstract Abstract Laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization is an important phenomenon that probes arguably the ultimate limits of the angular momentum dynamics in solid. Unfortunately, many aspects of the dynamics remain unclear except that the demagnetization transfers the angular momentum eventually to the lattice. In particular, the role and origin of electron-carried spin currents in the demagnetization process are debated. Here we experimentally probe the spin current in the opposite phenomenon, i.e., laser-induced ultrafast magnetization of FeRh, where the laser pump pulse initiates the angular momentum build-up rather than its dissipation. Using the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect, we directly measure the ultrafast-magnetization-driven spin current in a FeRh/Cu heterostructure. A strong correlation between the spin current and the magnetization dynamics of FeRh is found even though the spin filter effect is negligible in this opposite process. This result implies that the angular momentum build-up is achieved by an angular momentum transfer from the electron bath (supplier) to the magnon bath (receiver) and followed by the spatial transport of angular momentum (spin current) and dissipation of angular momentum to the phonon bath (spin relaxation).

    Abstract Gas-forming pyogenic liver abscess (GFPLA) is very rare and has a very high mortality in case of rupture into the abdominal cavity, which usually require surgical treatment. We experienced a case of a ruptured GFPLA due to Klebsiella pneumoniae complicated with peritonitis and sepsis in a 68-year-old diabetic woman. Immediate and aggressive medical treatments including intravenous antibiotics, percutaneous drainage, and continuous renal replacement therapy dramatically improved the liver abscess, peritonitis, and metabolic problems. We report an unusual case of a ruptured GFPLA without surgical management, treated successfully with only medical treatment.

    Abstract Nonwoven nanofiber webs from polyolefin show great potential in various fields such as nanofilters, high performance membranes and separators in lithium ion batteries (LiB). Although nonwoven microfiber webs can be obtained by the well-established melt-blown method, it is relatively difficult to produce nonwoven nanofiber web using polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene). There have been several reports on the preparation of polyolefin nanofibers by melt-electrospinning, although this approach presents several intrinsic disadvantages, i.e., high processing costs, the requirement of complex equipment, and poor control over pore size or fiber diameter. Solution-based electrospinning has the potential to overcome the drawbacks of melt-electrospinning, but the solubility of most polyolefin is poor. In this study, we found that poly-1-butene, a member of the poly(alpha-olefin) family, can be used in the electrospinning process. We set the concentration of the polymeric solution for electrospinning at 0.65–1.7 g/mL. Here, we report on the fabrication of nonwoven fiber webs composed of poly-1-butene and their copolymers. The diameter of the nonwoven fiber mat was 0.2–0.4 μm, which can be applicable for shutdown layer. As a representative application, we prepared a poly-1-butene nanofiber separator with an appropriate pore size by electrospinning for use as the shut-down layer of a next-generation LiB. The PB-based nanofiber mat provided shutdown ability at around 100 to 120 °C.

    Abstract Our study purpose was to report the clinical application of five different pharmacopunctures (Sweet BV, Scolopendrae Corpus, Chukyu, Cervi Parvum Cornu, and Hominis Placenta) for trigger finger. A patient was admitted to Ba-reun-mom S Korean Medicine Clinic and diagnosed with trigger finger. Because the effects of each pharmacopuncture have been confirmed in various acute to chronic cases, we treated a patient diagnosed with trigger finger using pharmacopunctures Sweet BV and Scolopendrae Corpus at the acute phase, Chukyu pharmacopuncture at the acute to chronic phase, and pharmacopunctures Cervi Parvum Cornu and Hominis Placenta at the chronic phase. This case was measured and assessed by Quinnell’s classification of triggering and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores. After treatment, the patient’s fifth finger pain and function were improved. The VAS score decreased from 5 to 0. The Quinnell’s classification of triggering score decreased from 2 to 0. This case indicated that a patient with trigger finger could be treated by five pharmacopuncture treatments according to the treatment regimen and disease progress.

    Abstract Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure that has been considered as a relatively safe treatment for patients with small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, RFA has been shown to be associated with complications including mechanical and thermal damage. A 74-year-old man with hepatitis C virus-associated HCC was admitted to our hospital. Abdominal computed tomography revealed two lobulated-HCC in segments 4 and 5. He had no medical history of hypertension and cardiac disease. During RFA, blood pressure was elevated to 200/140 mmHg. There was no evidence of pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, or ischemic heart disease. Laboratory findings for catecholamine surge were all within normal limits. After continuous intravenous nitroglycerin and oral beta-blocker treatment, patient’s blood pressure gradually decreased and back within the normal range. Hypertensive crisis after RFA treatment for HCC is rare. Most reported cases of hypertensive crisis during RFA were related to adrenal gland injury with a release of catecholamine. In our case, the site of HCC was not close to the adrenal gland, and there was no evidence of catecholamine surge. Herein, we report a very rare case of hypertensive crisis without a surge in adrenal hormones after RFA treatment for HCC.

    Abstract Abstract Chromic dyes responding against external stimuli are useful in various field of applications especially to colorimetric sensors. However, there have been several limitations in generic application because of its cost, stability and reliability. Here, we introduced highly functionalizable polymeric materials as a supporter covalently modified with controlled amount of chromic dyes. The photochromic organic dye (spiropyran) and highly functional thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) have been adopted as a representative example. Conventional polymeric solution processes such as film processing, wet-spinning, electrospinning and ink-writing are readily applicable because dye-TPU maintains its own solubility in various organic solvents. Additionally, since the concentration of dye on TPU are precisely controllable, these dye-TPU solution can be adopted in broad range of specific applications, such as secret coding, smart fabric, and chromic polymeric film layer.

    Abstract Abstract In this study, we derive analytical expressions for the critical switching current density induced by spin Hall effect in magnetic structures with the first- and second-order perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We confirm the validity of the expressions by comparing the analytical results with those obtained from a macrospin simulation. Moreover, we find that for a particular thermal stability parameter, the switching current density can be minimized for a slightly positive second-order perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and the minimum switching current density can further be tuned using an external magnetic field. The analytical expressions are of considerable value in designing high-density magnetic random access memory and cryogenic memory.
