Abstract Converse negative imaginary theorems for linear time-invariant systems are derived. In particular, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a feedback system to be robustly stable against various types of negative imaginary (NI) uncertainty. Both marginally stable and exponentially stable uncertain NI systems with restrictions on their static or instantaneous gains are considered. It is shown that robust stability against the former class entails the well-known strict NI property, whereas the latter class entails a new type of output strict NI property that is hitherto unexplored. We also establish a non-existence result that no stable system can robustly stabilise all marginally stable NI uncertainty, thereby showing that the uncertainty class of NI systems is too large as far as robust feedback stability is concerned, thus justifying the consideration of subclasses of NI systems with constrained static or instantaneous gains.

Abstract Buschke-Lowenstein tumor is a giant condyloma acuminatum that arises on the male and female anogenital region. It is considered a histologically benign tumor but carries a risk of malignant transformation. Early diagnosis and treatment are advised and the choice of treatment is crucial. We present a case of a 31-year-old pregnant woman with myasthenia gravis affected by Buschke-Lowenstein tumor.

Abstract Negative imaginary (NI) systems play an important role in the robust control of highly resonant flexible structures. In this paper, a generalized NI system framework is presented. A new NI system definition is given, which allows for flexible structure systems with colocated force actuators and position sensors, and with free body motion. This definition extends the existing definitions of NI systems. Also, necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the stability of positive feedback control systems where the plant is NI according to the new definition and the controller is strictly negative imaginary. The stability conditions in this paper are given purely in terms of properties of the plant and controller transfer function matrices, although the proofs rely on state space techniques. Furthermore, the stability conditions given are independent of the plant and controller system order. As an application of these results, a case study involving the control of a flexible robotic arm with a piezo-electric actuator and sensor is presented.

Abstract The objective of the study was to describe a Filipino woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed gigantomastia associated with hyperoestrogenemia and successfully treated by reduction mammoplasty. A 37-year-old Filipino woman with SLE of 5-year duration presented with enlargement of breasts, which became more noticeable and progressive during disease flares requiring increased steroid dose (+ or - 40 mg/day). Following control of the last SLE flare, with prednisone effectively tapered to 15 mg/day, she consented to surgical breast reduction. Preoperative physical examination recorded the right and left breast measurement of 61 cm and 54.5 cm from sternal notch to nipple tip, respectively. serum oestrogen assay was elevated. She successfully underwent reduction mammoplasty with free nipple graft, with an uneventful postoperative course. The breast tissue oestrogen and progesterone receptor assays were strongly positive. In the succeeding months, SLE disease remained stable with prednisone tapered to 10 mg daily. This case illustrates a rare occurrence of gigantomastia associated with hyperoestrogenemia in a patient with SLE, successfully treated with reduction mammoplasty.

Abstract Background: Primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube is a rare condition. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult and in most cases it is an intraoperative finding or a histopathological diagnosis.
Case: A 49-year-old woman presented with pelvic pain, fever (38 degrees C), elevated white blood cell count and a right adnexal mass. Pelvic inflammatory disease was suspected and broad spectrum antibiotics were established. Five days later, due to lack of clinical response, a total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and appendectomy were performed. Histopathology showed a primary fallopian tube carcinoma. Postoperatively she received chemotherapy. Afterwards she underwent a staging laparotomy. Some months later, new chemotherapy regimens were instituted because of the presence of lymph node metastases.
Conclusion: Malignancy should be included in the differential diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease.

Abstract The principal components of the hexane extract from olive leaves are analysed, following an analytical procedure based on the extraction with hexane and the later separation of groups of compounds, according to their polarity, by means of column and thin-layer chromatographies. The following components are separated and identified: hydrocarbons, ester waxes, triglycerides, tocopherols, esterols, lineal and terpenic alcohols and terpenic dialcohols. The olive leaves from five different varieties were analyzed: Picual, Arbequina, Hojiblanca, Empeltre and Cornicabra; the concentration of some compounds ranged between: 2.057-3.400 ppm saturated hydrocarbons; 38-152 ppm squalene; 915-1.874 ppm ester waxes; 28-100 ppm β-carotene; 832-1.396 ppm triglycerides; 41-125 ppm α-tocopherol; 614-2.500 ppm β-sitosterol; 95-311 ppm alcohols and 342-837 ppm terpenic dialcohols.

Abstract The terpenic acids, mainly the oleanolic acid, are used for the pharmaceutical industry, among other, for its antitumoral, anti-inflammatory and germicide activities. A process of obtainment of oleanolic acid from olive leaves is described. Solid/liquid extraction with ethanol, treatment of the extract and concentration under defined conditions, being possible to obtain in a single extraction stage a yield of 90 % of the leaf content (2-3 %, referred to the leaf weight) and with richness in excess of 95 %. The raw material is a by-product, coming from that of pruning yearly of the olive grove and of the cleaning of the olives. A method is described for the quantification of the terpenic acids from olive leaf of the alcoholic extract, by preparative thin layer chromatography fractionation and gas liquid chromatography quantification with betulinic acid standard.
