    Abstract Evidence for the association between high sodium intake and the onset of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is insufficient. This study examined the sex-specific association between sodium intake and the risk of NAFLD. This study included 2582 adults (aged 40-69 years; 1011 males and 1571 females). The total sodium excreted over 24 h was estimated from spot urine specimens using Tanaka's equation. Based on these estimates, participants were categorized into three groups according to their 24-h urinary sodium excretion levels: lowest (T1), middle (T2), and highest (T3). In addition, the participants were divided into non-NAFLD (≤36) and NAFLD (>36) groups based on the hepatic steatosis index. During the follow-up period (14 years), NAFLD was observed in 551 participants. The estimated 24-h urinary sodium excretion levels were positively associated with the incidence of NAFLD in all subjects. Upon sex stratification, females in the T2 and T3 groups exhibited adjusted hazard ratios of 1.35 and 1.51, respectively, compared with the T1 group. However, a significant relationship was not observed in males. High intake of sodium, especially among females, may be an important factor contributing to the development of NAFLD. Individuals with high sodium intake should be appropriately counselled and monitored for the risk of NAFLD.

    Abstract Background: Minimal invasive surgery in hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HBP) surgery has been accepted worldwide in recent years. However, applications of single-site laparoscopic surgery in complex HBP surgery have been limited due to difficulty in manoeuvring instruments and the limited range of motion resulting from clashing instruments.
    Methods: To overcome the limitations, we have used the Da Vinci single-site surgical platform with one additional port in a Da Vinci Xi system to perform donor right hepatectomy, pancreaticoduodenectomy, and combined resection of the common bile duct and spleen vessels preserving distal pancreatectomy.
    Results: In selected patients, using a robotic single-site plus one port system allowed the successful completion of complex HBP surgery.
    Discussion: Complex HBP surgery can be performed safely in a stable environment using the robotic single-site plus one port system. Further exploration of a robotic single-site plus one port in complex HBP surgery is necessary.

    Abstract Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most frequent liver diseases among adolescents. Several animal studies have suggested that volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) increase NAFLD risk. However, few epidemiological studies have confirmed the association between VOCs, PAHs and NAFLD in the general adolescent population. Therefore, we analyzed 798 adolescents from the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS), 2015-2017, to examine the associations of urinary metabolites of VOCs and PAHs with serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and NAFLD prevalence. We performed linear regression, logistic regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) to evaluate the association of urinary VOCs and PAHs metabolites with ALT levels and NAFLD prevalence. After adjusting for all covariates, urinary benzylmercapturic acid and 2-hydroxyfluorene levels were found to increase ALT activity and NAFLD prevalence. Additionally, the BKMR analyses showed a significantly positive overall effect on ALT activity and NAFLD prevalence with urinary concentrations of VOCs and PAHs metabolites, with 2-hydroxyfluorene as the biggest contributor. Our study suggests that exposure to low-level VOCs and PAHs may have a detrimental effect on NAFLD risk in adolescents. Given the increasing prevalence of NAFLD in adolescents, future cohort studies are confirmed to comprehend the effect of these chemicals on NAFLD risk.

    Abstract Background: Nursing students must learn about the core values of nursing care. Thus, education designed to improve their caring ability should be included in nursing curricula. Nursing students' caring ability is reportedly affected by emotional intelligence and resilience. However, no studies have explored whether these qualities have mediating effects on the relationship between nursing students' type D personality and their caring ability.
    Objectives: To examine the mediating effects of emotional intelligence and resilience on the relationship between type D personality and caring ability in nursing students.
    Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive survey study.
    Setting: The study was conducted in South Korea.
    Participants: 278 nursing students.
    Methods: Type D personality, emotional intelligence, resilience, and caring ability were measured using questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Pearson's correlations, regression analysis, and Hayes' Process Macro using the bootstrap method.
    Results: Results indicated that type D personality significantly predicted emotional intelligence (B = -6.80, p < .001), resilience (B = -6.77, p < .001), and caring ability (B = -7.20, p = .001). Emotional intelligence mediated the relationship between type D personality and caring ability.
    Conclusion: Interventions to improve the caring ability of nursing students should include an evaluation of nursing students' emotional intelligence and strategies to promote their emotional intelligence.

    Abstract Background: Korea has witnessed significant fluctuations in its suicide rates in recent decades, which may be related to modifications in its death registration system. This study aimed to explore the structural shifts in suicide trends, as well as accidental and ill-defined deaths in Korea, and to analyze the patterns of these changes.
    Methods: We analyzed age-adjusted death rates for suicides, deaths due to transport accidents, falls, drowning, fire-related incidents, poisonings, other external causes, and ill-defined deaths in Korea from 1997 to 2021. We identified change-points using the 'breakpoints' function from the 'strucchange' package and conducted interrupted time series analyses to assess trends before and after these change-points.
    Results: Korea's suicide rates had three change-points in February 2003, September 2008, and June 2012, characterized by stair-step changes, with level jumps at the 2003 and 2008 change-points and a sharp decline at the 2012 change-point. Notably, the 2003 and 2008 spikes roughly coincided with modifications to the death ascertainment process. The trend in suicide rates showed a downward slope within the 2003-2008 and 2008-2012 periods. Furthermore, ill-defined deaths and most accidental deaths decreased rapidly through several change-points in the early and mid-2000s.
    Conclusion: The marked fluctuations in Korea's suicide rate during the 2000s may be largely attributed to improvements in suicide classification, with potential implications beyond socio-economic factors. These findings suggest that the actual prevalence of suicides in Korea in the 2000s might have been considerably higher than officially reported.

    Abstract This study evaluated economic feasibility through production efficiency, return on investment (ROI) and payout time of a hybrid system using a photobioreactor (PBR)-light guide panel (LGP)-PBR array (PLPA) and solar cells developed for astaxanthin and ω-3 FA simultaneous production of Haematococcus pluvialis. The economic feasibility of the PLPA hybrid system (8 PBRs) and the PBR-PBR-PBR array (PPPA) system (8 PBRs) was evaluated for producing high-value products while effectively reducing CO₂. Introducing a PLPA hybrid system has increased the amount of culture per area by 1.6 times. Also, the shading effect was effectively suppressed with an LGP placed between each PBR, increasing biomass and astaxanthin productivity by 3.39-fold and 4.79-fold, respectively compared to the untreated H. pluvialis cultures. In addition, ROI increased by 6.55 and 4.71 times, and the payout time was reduced by 1.34 and 1.37 times, respectively in 10 and 100-ton scale processes.

    Abstract A digital twin is a virtual model of a process, product, or service, which is one of the key technologies in the fourth industry. The pairing of the virtual and physical world allows analysis of data and monitoring of systems to head off problems before they occur. This paper presents a digital twin architecture and a system based on an interoperable data model. It explains how to build a digital twin for the integrated control monitoring using edge devices, data analytics, and realistic 3D visualization. The system allows continuous collaboration between field engineers for data gathering, designers for modeling 3D models, and layout engineers for layout changing by generating 3D digital twin models automatically. The system helps stakeholders focus on their respective roles to build digital twins. Examples applied to the Korean automotive parts makers are also introduced in this paper. The system can be easily used by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as large companies. Beyond simply watching the production site with CCTV, the production site can be intuitively managed based on the digital twin.

    Abstract Pyrethroid insecticides have been broadly used as pest control in agriculture and residential spaces, exerting high effectiveness of insecticidal property and relatively low toxicity to humans. Several animal studies suggested that exposure to pyrethroids may induce hematological abnormalities, thereby altering the number of blood cells and resulting in blood disorders. However, no epidemiologic study has reported on the effect of pyrethroid insecticide exposure on hematological changes, except for occupational exposure. This study aimed to investigate the effect of urinary 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) concentrations on hematological parameters in a representative South Korean adult population. We analyzed data from 6296 adults enrolled in the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (2012-2014). We employed multiple linear regression analysis to evaluate the association of urinary 3-PBA levels with eight hematological profiles: white blood cells (WBCs), red blood cells (RBCs), hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The urinary 3-PBA levels were negatively associated with WBC, RBC, and hemoglobin levels and positively associated with MCV levels. The direction and magnitude of the association between the 3-PBA and hematological parameters varied according to sex and age. The adverse effects of 3-PBA on hematological parameters were distinctive among males aged 60 years and older. In this age group, 3-PBA levels were negatively associated with the WBC, RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and MCHC levels among males. This study is the first to verify that urinary 3-PBA concentrations at the levels found in a Korean population are associated with blood parameters. This finding merits further investigation to understand the impact of 3-PBA on human blood function and public health.
