Abstract "This book explores how and why innovative climate policies spread across sub-national regions and between governance levels in China. Despite the significance of emerging economies in a pathway to a zero-carbon future, research to date on China's transformation governance remains limited. Drawing on a theoretical framework for policy diffusion and based on extensive data from expert interviews with Chinese decision makers and policy practitioners, Lina Li and Maia Haru Hall focus on the policy of emissions trading systems (ETS) and two key case studies: Shanghai and Hubei. The authors examine the role of the national government and how much freedom the sub-national regions have in developing ETS policy, as well as pinpointing key actors and the role of policy and knowledge diffusion mechanisms. Overall, this book sheds light on the competition between China and the West in the transition to climate-friendly societies and economies, highlighting opportunities for cooperation between them. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental politics and policy, climate change, urban studies, and Chinese studies more broadly"--

Abstract This book explores the role of railways in developing sustainable low-carbon mobility by analyzing the intermodal relationship between railways and other transport modes. Focusing on geographical and governance perspectives, and taking China as a case study, it analyzes the competition and cooperation between and integration of railways and other transport modes, in order to provide guidance on future sustainable transport development. Firstly, the book examines the contribution of railways to low carbon emissions in China over recent decades by estimating the carbon dioxide emissions from various transport modes in China at national and regional levels using decomposition analysis. It then discusses the current competition and cooperation between railways and other transport modes, as well as their integration and the impact of their relationship on climate change. It also highlights how the competition between railways and other transport modes may change the passenger flows between city pairs and so alter transport carbon emissions and examines how cooperation and integration could improve passengers’ travel experience while at the same time reducing carbon emissions. Lastly, it addresses the implications for future sustainable transport development based on institutional analysis. Presenting multidisciplinary, sustainable transport research on the role of railways in reducing carbon emissions, and also offering policy recommendations for developing low-carbon, integrated transport in the future, this book is a valuable reference resource for graduates, researchers, and government managers responsible for transport development, urban planning and environmental policy.

Abstract This study examines gender differences in the relationship between income inequality and health in China. Multilevel regression models were used to analyse data from the most recent five waves (2004-2015) across 12 provinces in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). The findings remain robust when considering alternative measures of health outcomes and income inequality. Men showed greater sensitivity to income inequality in terms of adverse health outcomes. When individuals experienced the same level of changes in income inequality, men had a higher risk of reporting poor health status, higher BMI, higher systolic blood pressure, and a higher risk of smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol than women. Despite missing data and causal inference challenges, this study highlights gender differences in the relationship between income inequality and health in China, potentially attributed to cultural gender norms. Double standards regarding weight and health-compromising behaviours based on gender roles and stereotypes are more intensive in China, particularly in areas with higher income inequality. One policy implication of this study is that reducing income inequality could enhance individual health outcomes, with a more notable impact on men's health compared to women's.

Abstract The work started 20 years ago [Appl. Opt.42, 6255 (2003)APOPAI0003-693510.1364/AO.42.006255] investigating the physical mechanism of multilayer dielectric reflection gratings to achieve 100% diffraction efficiency is completed to offer much deeper insight than before. How different scattering matrix elements of the top periodic surface corrugation contribute to the -1st-order efficiency of such a compound grating is unveiled analytically using a minimum set of real parameters. The two diffraction amplitudes transmitted through the top corrugation play a dominant role in enabling 100% diffraction efficiency. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions for 100% efficiency are derived. Moreover, the role of the reflection phase of the perfect reflector, including the contribution of the optical path between the top corrugation and the reflector, is emphasized.
