    Abstract The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a one-of-a-kind treatment among contemporary bariatric surgical procedures, and its therapeutic effects for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are satisfactory. The present study performed isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis identifying different proteomics between T2DM rats with or without Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, and GTP binding elongation factor GUF1 (Guf1) was first found to be significantly upregulated in rats from the T2DM plus RYGB group. In the cellular lipotoxicity model induced by palmitic acid stimulation of rat pancreatic beta cell line, INS-1, palmitic acid treatment inhibited cell viability, suppressed GSIS, promoted lipid droplet formation, promoted cell apoptosis, and induced mitochondrial membrane potential loss. The effects of palmitic acid on INS-1 cells mentioned above could be partially eliminated by Guf1 overexpression but aggravated by Guf1 knockdown. Last, under palmitic acid treatment, Guf1 overexpression promotes the PI3K/Akt and NF-κB signaling but inhibits the AMPK activation. Guf1 is upregulated in T2DM rats who received RYGB, and Guf1 overexpression improves cell mitochondrial functions, increases cell proliferation, inhibits cell apoptosis, and promotes cell functions in palmitic acid-treated β cells.

    Abstract Background: Obesity is a widely recognized global public health issue, and bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective intervention for alleviating obesity associated health complications. However, the impact of bariatric surgery on male reproductive function remains inconclusive in the literature. The current understanding of the impact of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on male reproductive function remains ambiguous, despite its status as the most commonly performed bariatric surgery. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on erectile function and semen quality.
    Patients and methods: A total of thirty-four obese patients were enrolled in this study and underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Prior to the operation and at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperation, all participants were required to complete the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) questionnaire and undergo a nocturnal erectile function test and semen quality analysis.
    Results: Within 12 months postoperation, body mass index, blood lipids, and insulin resistance showed significant improvement. The IIEF-5 score increased significantly (18.88±5.97 vs. 23.78±3.19, P < 0.05), and the frequency and duration of erections significantly improved compared to baseline. Sperm concentration, total motility, survival rate, and sperm morphology parameters exhibited a significant decline at 3 months but demonstrated a significant improvement at 6 and 12 months post-operation. At 12 months, sperm concentration was shown to be correlated with changes in zinc (r = 0.25, P = 0.033) as well as changes in testosterone (r = 0.43, P = 0.013).
    Conclusions: LSG has beneficial effects on erectile function, despite a transient decline in semen quality at 3 months postoperatively, followed by a significant improvement at 12 months.

    Abstract Objectives: Surgical robot system has broken the limitation of traditional surgery and shown excellent performance in surgery, and has been widely used in minimally invasive treatment in most areas of surgery. This study aims to verify the basic performance of the domestic surgical robot system and the safety and effectiveness of the integrated bipolar electrocoagulation and ultrasonic knife.
    Methods: The basic performance of the domestic surgical robot system was evaluated by completing the square knot and surgical knot, vertical and horizontal perforation and right ring perforation and suture, as well as picking up beans. Compared with laparoscopy, the safety and effectiveness of the domestic surgical robot after integrated interconnection bipolar electrocoagulation and ultrasonic scalpel were evaluated by detecting the vascular closure performance and the degree of histopathological damage in animals.
    Results: Compared with freehand knotting, domestic robot knotting speed and circumference were slightly worse, but better than laparoscopic knotting. There was no statistical significance in the tension difference of the surgical knots among the 3 methods (
    Conclusions: Domestic surgical robots are obviously superior to laparoscopy in suturing, knotting, and moving objects, and domestic surgical robots' interconnect bipolar electrocoagulation and ultrasonic knife have achieved success in animal experiments, and hemostasis is considered to be safe and effective.

    Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the long-term efficacy of large gastric pouch surgery and revisional surgery in patients with a body mass index (BMI) < 35 kg/m
    Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy with a large gastric pouch in our hospital. The clinical pre- and post-surgery data, including BMI, waist circumference, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid metabolism-related indicators, homoeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and major complications, were recorded and analyzed.
    Results: Twenty-four patients were included in the analysis, 12 of whom underwent revisional surgery. At their 5-year-follow-up after the primary surgery, the BMI and waist circumference of the patients with T2DM were lower than their baseline values. The BMI, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, FPG and waist circumference also decreased after the revisional surgery. The rates of remission of diabetes after the primary vs. after the revisional surgery were 4.17% vs. 41.70%, respectively (P < 0.05).
    Conclusion: Roux-en-Y gastrojejunostomy with a large gastric pouch is not effective in the long term and, therefore, is unsuitable for Chinese patients with T2DM and a BMI < 35 kg/m

    Abstract Background: Emerging evidence supported the significant role of body composition and fat distribution in the etiology and pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
    Objective: To assess the predictive value of representative parameters of body composition and fat distribution for T2DM remission after bariatric surgery.
    Methods: A total of 72 patients with T2DM who underwent bariatric surgery in our center between September 2010 and December 2018 were included in this retrospective observational study. Diabetes remission was defined according to the American Diabetes Association criteria released in 2021. Body fat percentage, skeletal muscle index, Android/Gynoid ratio and trunk/leg fat ratio were derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and assessed.
    Results: A total of 40 patients (56%) achieved remission among 72 patients. Patients in the remission group had higher body fat percentage and lower trunk/leg fat ratio than those in the non-remission group. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) for predicting T2DM remission was higher for trunk/leg fat ratio (0.784), compared to BMI (AUC 0. 0.690) and body fat percentage (AUC 0.688). The prediction model (AUC 0.883) including age, duration of T2DM, and trunk/leg fat ratio performed better than the ABCD score (AUC 0.809) and the DiaRem score (AUC 0.792). A nonlinear relationship was observed between trunk/leg fat ratio and BMI.
    Conclusion: Trunk/leg fat ratio is a promising predictor for T2DM remission after bariatric surgery.

    Abstract Background: Obesity is associated with a significant predisposition towards cardiovascular events and acts as an important risk factor for mortality. Herein, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis to estimate the protective effect of bariatric surgery on disease-specific mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with severe obesity.
    Methods: PubMed and Embase were searched from inception to 4 June 2022. Eligible studies were age, sex, and BMI-matched cohort studies. The protocol for this meta-analysis was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022337319).
    Results: Forty matched cohort studies were identified. Bariatric surgery was associated with a lower risk of disease-specific mortality including cancer mortality [hazard ratio with 95% confidence interval: 0.46 (0.37-0.58)], cardiovascular mortality [0.38 (0.29-0.50)], and diabetes mortality [0.25 (0.11-0.57)]. Bariatric surgery was associated with a lower incidence of MACEs [0.58 (0.51-0.66)] and its components including all-cause mortality [0.52 (0.47-0.58)], atrial fibrillation [0.79 (0.68-0.92)], heart failure [0.52 (0.42-0.65)], myocardial infarction [0.55 (0.41-0.74)], and stroke [0.75 (0.63-0.89)]. According to subgroup analysis on all-cause mortality, patients with severe obesity and type 2 diabetes benefited more from bariatric surgery than those with severe obesity only (heterogeneity between groups: P =0.001), while different surgical approaches brought similar benefits (heterogeneity between groups: P =0.87).
    Conclusions: This meta-analysis of 40 matched cohort studies supports that bariatric surgery reduces disease-specific mortality and incidence of both MACEs and its components in patients with severe obesity compared with nonsurgical subjects. Bariatric surgery deserves a more aggressive consideration in the management of severe obesity.

    Abstract Background: Obesity is an independent risk factor for severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but there is little evidence on whether prior bariatric surgery benefits the outcomes of patients with COVID-19. We aimed to summarize this relationship by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of current case-control studies.
    Methods: We searched several electronic databases for case-control studies conducted between January 2020 and March 2022. We compared the rates of mortality, mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, dialysis, hospitalization, and length of hospital stay between COVID-19 patients with and without a history of bariatric surgery.
    Results: We included six studies with 137 903 patients; 5270 (3.8%) had prior bariatric surgery, while 132 633 (96.2%) did not. COVID-19 patients with a history of bariatric surgery had significantly lower mortality (odds ratio (OR) = 0.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.23-0.74), ICU admission (OR = 0.48; 95% CI = 0.36-0.65), and mechanical ventilation rates than those with a history of non-bariatric surgery (OR = 0.51; 95% CI = 0.35-0.75).
    Conclusions: Prior bariatric surgery was associated with a reduced risk of mortality and reduced severity of COVID-19 in patients with obesity compared to those with no prior bariatric surgery. Further large-sample prospective studies are needed to support these results.

    Abstract Flexible batteries based on gel electrolytes with high safety are promising power solutions for wearable electronics but suffer from vulnerable electrode-electrolyte interfaces especially upon complex deformations, leading to irreversible capacity loss or even battery collapse. Here, a supramolecular sol-gel transition electrolyte (SGTE) that can dynamically accommodate deformations and repair electrode-electrolyte interfaces through its controllable rewetting at low temperatures is designed. Mediated by the micellization of polypropylene oxide blocks in Pluronic and host-guest interactions between α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) and polyethylene oxide blocks, the high ionic conductivity and compatibility with various salts of SGTE afford resettable electrode-electrolyte interfaces and thus constructions of a series of highly durable, flexible aqueous zinc batteries. The design of this novel gel electrolyte provides new insights for the development of flexible batteries.

    Abstract Aqueous fiber batteries with high safety and flexibility have attracted extensive attention for their promising applications in next-generation wearable electronics. However, the further applications of aqueous fiber batteries are severely hindered by mechanical instability and insufficient electrochemical performance. Here, a durable protective layer with a compact structure and high conductivity is designed to endow the fiber cathode with improved integrity and reaction kinetics. The resulting Zn–MnO₂ fiber battery demonstrates high durability and stable energy output under varying deformations and delivers a long-term cycle life of up to 4000 cycles at 2 A g⁻¹. It also shows a high specific capacity of 332 mA h g⁻¹ and an improved rate capability of 163 mA h g⁻¹ at 5 A g⁻¹. The design of the durable protective layer provides a useful strategy for the construction of fiber batteries with high stability and performance.
