Abstract We proposed a quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBICs) metasurface to realize sensing in the terahertz band. It consists of silicon split ellipse cylinders with different short-long axes and a quartz substrate. By introducing two asymmetric split ellipse cylinders unit cells, magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole resonances of the proposed structure are investigated by multiple Pole theory. This shows that the continuum bound states are transformed into quasi-BICs by tuning the length of the ellipse long axis, and so a high-quality factor can be obtained. The Q value of the proposed structure is 3205, and the figure of merit is 469.64. It has potential applications in gas, liquid, and biomaterial sensing.

Abstract The flexibly manipulated terahertz wave is currently a hot research topic. To address this challenge, we proposed an all-dielectric coding metasurface for shaping the terahertz wave including beam splitting, beam deflection, vortex beam generators, and a vortex beam and multi-beam splitting combination by combining addition with the convolution theorem. This work represents what we believe to be a new method of combining terahertz wave regulation with digital signal processing and opens up the versatile design ideas of multifunctional metadevices.

Abstract Background and objective: Ketamine offers a promising solution to common postoperative issues in abdominal surgery, including pain, nausea, opioid use, and opioid-related side effects. The purpose of this literature review is to analyze the benefits and potential adverse effects associated with the intraoperative utilization of ketamine during abdominal surgeries.
Methods: A comprehensive search of PubMed and Ovid MEDLINE was conducted by two independent reviewers. Studies were included if they targeted adult patients and evaluated intra-operative use of ketamine for abdominal operations.
Key content and findings: We identified 13 studies of intraoperative use of ketamine in abdominal surgery. The results of these studies showed improved pain management as demonstrated by lower pain scores, decreased hyperalgesia, and a decreased need for additional analgesics. The results also demonstrated a decrease in opioid consumption during the critical 24-hour postoperative period. However, a few studies reported undesirable side effects such as hallucinations and delirium.
Conclusions: The intraoperative use of ketamine holds promise as a valuable adjunct to anesthesia during abdominal surgeries. Studies support its use in improving post-operative pain and decreasing opioid consumption. Due to risks of adverse effects, further studies in larger patient populations may help identify which patients will benefit the most. This review offers a succinct selection of the pertinent literature.

Abstract The first step toward advancing our understanding of complex networks involves determining their connectivity structures from the time series data. These networks are often high-dimensional, and in practice, only a limited amount of data can be collected. In this work, we formulate the network inference task as a bilinear optimization problem and propose an iterative algorithm with sequential initialization to solve this bilinear program. We demonstrate the scalability of our approach to network size and its robustness against measurement noise, hyper-parameter variation, and deviations from the network model. Results across experimental and simulated datasets, comprising oscillatory, non-oscillatory, and chaotic dynamics, showcase the superior inference accuracy of our technique compared to existing methods.

Abstract The presence of internal feedback pathways (IFPs) is a prevalent yet unexplained phenomenon in the brain. Motivated by experimental observations on 1) motor-related signals in visual areas, and 2) massively distributed processing in the brain, we approach this problem from a sensorimotor standpoint and make use of distributed optimal controllers to explain IFPs. We use the System Level Synthesis (SLS) controller to model neural phenomena such as signaling delay, local processing, and local reaction. Based on the SLS controller, we make qualitative predictions about IFPs that strongly align with existing experimental observations. We introduce a `mesocircuit' for optimal performance with distributed and local processing, and local disturbance rejection; this mesocircuit requires extreme amounts of IFPs and memory for proper function. This is the first theory that replicates the massive amounts of IFPs in the brain purely from a priori principles, providing a new theoretical basis upon which we can build to better understand the inner workings of the brain.
