Abstract Extrinsic fiber optic pressure transducer (optode) development has progressed from the use of bifurcated bundles, to dual-fiber configurations, and recently to singlefiber optodes. Pressure optodes are used in biomedical applications because of the advantages (electrical isolation of the patient, immunity to electromagnetic fields and small size) they offer over older, electrically based measurements. It is also possible to use intrinsic fiber optic sensors, based on pressure-induced changes in in the fiber itself, to make distributed sensing systems.

Abstract Additive manufacturing technologies based on stereolithography rely on initiating spatial photopolymerization by using photoinitiators activated by UV-visible light. Many applications requiring printing in water are limited since water-soluble photoinitiators are scarce, and their price is skyrocketing. On the contrary, thermal initiators are widely used in the chemical industry for polymerization processes due to their low cost and simplicity of initiation by heat at low temperatures. However, such initiators were never used in 3D printing technologies, such as vat photopolymerization stereolithography, since localizing the heat at specific printing voxels is impossible. Here we propose using a thermal initiator for 3D printing for localized polymerization processes by near-infrared and visible light irradiation without conventional photoinitiators. This is enabled by using gold nanorods or silver nanoparticles at very low concentrations as photothermal converters in aqueous and non-aqueous mediums. Our proof of concept demonstrates the fabrication of hydrogel and polymeric objects using stereolithography-based 3D printers, vat photopolymerization, and two-photon printing.

Abstract Planetary wave (PW) modulation of gravity wave (GW) dissipation has long been considered a source of longitudinal variability in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. This process has been modeled, and inferred from satellite and ground-based measurements. However, direct observations of PW-GW interaction are rare. The present study examines GW momentum fluxes at the Southern Argentina Agile Meteor Radar (SAAMER) in Tierra del Fuego, and a meteor radar at the Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO) in Cerro Pachon, Chile. Two-day wave variations in the vertical flux of horizontal momentum(u’w’and v’w’)have typical amplitudes of 30 m 2 s 2 , and are generally directed opposite to the horizontal wind, consistent with critical layer filtering of upward-propagating GWs. Two-day wave-modulated GW drag values computed from the flux measurements are 600 m 2; s 2 day -1 ;at Tierra del Fuego, and 1000 m 2; s 2 ;day -1 ;at ALO. GW drag upon the meridional wind shows qualitative agreement with a proxy inferred as the residual of the two-day wave meridional momentum budget.

Abstract Solar thermal tides in the Earth atmosphere play an important role in the dynamics, energetics and transport from the surface to the thermosphere-ionosphere region. Tidal dynamics and its variability impact the global and regional coupling between atmospheric layers. Paper will discuss main drivers and metrics of observed tidal variability in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) evaluating capability of whole atmosphere model predictions constrained by meteorological analyses below the stratopause to reproduce it. The observed influence of the data-constrained lower atmosphere on the MLT dynamics is well captured by simulations that are capable to predict the global and regional tidal variability deduced from the space-borne and ground-based measurements of temperature and winds. The model-model and model-data differences in the representation of tides and their effects will be highlighted and discussed. Along with the scale-aware formulations of dynamics-physics coupling in models to adequately constrain the diurnal cycles, daily mean prevailing flows, and wave-wave interactions the rapid (~1-hr cadence) analysis of MLT data will likely improve realism of tidal dynamics in the whole atmosphere predictions.

Abstract Most patients with thoracic endometriosis present with catamenial pneumothorax, a rare condition in which recurrent episodes occur within 72 h before or after the start of menstruation. We report a case of thoracic endometriosis presenting with recurrent bloody pleural effusions without pneumothorax diagnosed on pleural fluid cytology. We describe the cytomorphology and immunoprofile of thoracic endometriosis and discuss the differential diagnoses, including neoplastic processes. We also highlight the importance of communication with clinicians for timeliness of diagnosis and treatment, especially when thoracic endometriosis is not suspected.

Abstract This chapter describes the experience of ophthalmology practices, with an emphasis on retina-specific concerns and procedures, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We describe the protocols implemented to help safely provide care amidst the risk of contagious illness, including increased hygienic cleaning of offices and equipment, personal protective equipment, disposable ophthalmology equipment, office social distancing, appointment triaging and entry screening, and triaging and implementing protective strategies for procedures and surgeries. The lessons gained from this pandemic will allow us to more efficiently transition into these strategies to provide excellent, vision saving care when the next eventual crisis presents itself.
