Abstract Objective: Although acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (ACPO) complicating chemotherapy is still a controversial entity, it is one with which radiologists should be familiar. We describe the imaging features of ACPO in children following chemotherapy for treatment of a haematological malignancy.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the imaging features of eight children (age 3-14 years) with chemotherapy-related ACPO, all of whom had undergone plain radiography and CT examinations. The diagnosis of ACPO was based on both clinical features and imaging findings.
Results: Abnormalities noted on plain radiography included faecal gaseous distension of the transverse colon (4/8), faecal gaseous distension of the ascending colon (3/8), gaseous distended transverse colon (3/8) and gaseous small bowel loops (6/8). As seen on CT scans, findings of faecal fluid distended the ascending and transverse colon (5/8), faecal gas distended the transverse and ascending colon (3/8), and small bowel dilatation (5/8) and pneumatosis intestinalis (2/8) were noted. Seven of the eight patients had colonic dilatation from the caecum to the transverse colon with the transition zone near the splenic flexure.
Conclusion: In children presenting with abdominal pain and constipation following chemotherapy, imaging features of progressive colonic dilatation seen on radiography and dilatation from the caecum to the transverse colon with the transition zone near the splenic flexure, as noted on CT, are suggestive of ACPO. CT is more successful than plain radiography for evaluating this finding, particularly in colonic segments filled primarily with fluid, but CT should not be necessary for making the diagnosis as plain radiographs and clinical evaluation should be adequate.

Abstract Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) is a highly contagious virus that causes significant morbidity and mortality in common carp Cyprinus carpio L. and considered to be one of the most important pathogens of koi and common carp worldwide. Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 infected consignments imported from East Asian and South-East Asian regions were identified during quarantine period in Singapore, and virus from a 2005 consignment was successfully isolated in koi fin cells. A combination of sequence analyses and duplex PCR were used to characterize 15 CyHV-3 isolates detected in koi consignments between 2005 and 2011. Sequence analyses of the enlarged 9/5, SphI-5 and TK gene regions identified both the Asian 1 (n = 11) and European 4 (n = 4) genotypes. Duplex PCR analysis of two variable marker regions between ORF29 and ORF30 (marker I) as well as ORF133 and its upstream region (marker II) revealed viruses of genotypes J (I

Abstract We present the first search for the pair production of dark particles X via K_{L}^{0}→XX with X decaying into two photons using the data collected by the KOTO experiment. No signal was observed in the mass range of 40-110  MeV/c^{2} and 210-240  MeV/c^{2}. This sets upper limits on the branching fractions as B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-4)×10^{-7} and B(K_{L}^{0}→XX)<(1-2)×10^{-6} at the 90% confidence level for the two mass regions, respectively.

Abstract Background: Hepatic fibrosis occurs because of injury to the liver parenchyma and biliary system. We have investigated the effect of an organic selenium anti-oxidant, ebselen, in the resolution of experimentally induced hepatic fibrosis, and evaluated its effect on various paradigms involved in hepatic fibrosis.
Methods: Following pretreatment with phenobarbitone, liver fibrosis was induced in male Fischer 344 rats by using carbon tetrachloride treatment for 10 weeks. Carbon tetrachloride-treated rats were randomly assigned into two groups: (i) no ebselen; and (ii) ebselen administered for 3 weeks following a 10-week carbon tetrachloride treatment period. Normal controls were: (i) neither carbon tetrachloride nor ebselen treated; or (ii) ebselen treated for 13 weeks. Liver sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Masson trichrome and stained for reticulin by using silver impregnation. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was used to analyze the steady-state levels of gene(s) involved in: (i) hepatic fibrosis, namely, transforming growth factor-beta1, procollagen I and III, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 and matrix metalloproteinase-13; (ii) oxidative stress, namely, cytochrome P4502E1; and (iii) preneoplastic liver foci, namely, the placental form of glutathione-S-transferase.
Results: Histological staining showed that ebselen resolves carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis. Treatment with ebselen reduced steady-state levels of transforming growth factor-beta1, procollagen I and III, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1, cytochrome P4502E1 and placental form glutathione-S-transferase transcripts, and increased transcripts of matrix metalloproteinase-13.
Conclusion: These findings provide evidence that ebselen significantly causes the resolution of carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic fibrosis in rats.

Abstract The rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of (7.20±0.05_{stat}±0.66_{syst})×10^{-10}, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from K^{±} and scattered K_{L} decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be 1.22±0.26. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of 4.9×10^{-9} on the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract Purpose: We conducted a prospective study of color Doppler sonography in children with suspected gastroesophageal reflux (GER). The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of color Doppler sonography with that of continuous 24-hour pH monitoring of the esophagus in diagnosing GER and to determine how to interpret the reflux episodes detected on color Doppler sonography in children at high risk for reflux.
Methods: Color Doppler sonography and 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring were performed in 54 children ranging in age from 2 months to 10 years (mean, 3 years). The stomach of each patient was filled for adequate gastric distention just before the color Doppler sonographic examination. We counted the number of reflux episodes over a period of 15 minutes. One day after the sonographic examination, the reflux was evaluated with esophageal pH monitoring, and the resultant reflux index (ReI) was obtained. The ReI was considered to be pathologic when it was equal to or greater than 11.99%. The number of refluxes on color Doppler sonography and the ReI were correlated for each patient.
Results: The 2 tests showed an 81.5% agreement in the detection of GER. When pH monitoring was taken as the reference test, color Doppler sonography had a high sensitivity (95.5%) for diagnosing GER but a very low specificity (11.0%), with a positive predictive value of 84.3% and a negative predictive value of 33.3%. There was no statistically significant correlation between the frequencies of GER detected on color Doppler sonography and the ReIs on pH monitoring (p = 0.1103). There was no correlation between the reflux grades on sonography and the ReI grades on pH monitoring (p = 0.422).
Conclusions: Color Doppler sonography is highly sensitive and easier to use than pH monitoring. Although there are no definite criteria for evaluating the severity of GER on color Doppler imaging, this modality may be useful in screening children for GER.

Abstract A search for the rare decay K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to 2.2×10^{19} protons on target, a single event sensitivity of (1.30±0.01_{stat}±0.14_{syst})×10^{-9} was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of 3.0×10^{-9} for the branching fraction of K_{L}→π^{0}νν[over ¯] at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for K_{L}→π^{0}X^{0} was also set as 2.4×10^{-9} at the 90% C.L., where X^{0} is an invisible boson with a mass of 135  MeV/c^{2}.

Abstract Purpose: We assessed the utility of the resistance index ratio (RIR) in distinguishing between obstructive and nonobstructive upper urinary tract dilatation in children.
Methods: Twenty-three children (7 days-14 years old) with unilateral dilated collecting systems and a contralateral normal kidney were prospectively evaluated by duplex Doppler sonography. We measured the resistance index (RI) of the intrarenal arteries and calculated the RIR. Ninety-six normal kidneys in 48 controls were also evaluated.
Results: Twelve kidneys were proved to be obstructed at the ureteropelvic junction, and 11 were found by renal scintigraphy with furosemide and/or by surgery to have nonobstructive dilatation. The mean RIR differed significantly between the obstructed and dilated nonobstructed kidneys (1.16+/-0.04 versus 1.04+/-0.04, respectively; p < 0.01). After surgical correction of ureteropelvic junction obstruction, the obstructed kidneys showed significant drops in the RIR (1.18+/-0.03 to 1.07+/-0.03, p < 0.01). The RIR showed no statistically significant relationship with age (r = -0.268, p > 0.01); however, the RI declined with increasing age (r= -0.414, p < 0.01). An RIR cut-off value of > or = 1.10 provided a good discriminatory level, resulting in a sensitivity of 92%, a specificity of 97%, a positive predictive value of 85%, and a negative predictive value of 97%.
Conclusions: An RIR cut-off value of > or = 1.10 appears to be an effective parameter for evaluation and follow-up of unilateral obstructive hydronephrosis in children.

Abstract Unlabelled: PURPOSE AND MATERIAL AND METHODS: MR findings of 9 surgically proven tubo-ovarian abscesses were analyzed in 8 patients. The images were evaluated for signal intensity characteristics and morphologic appearance of the mass, and presence of secondary changes in adjacent pelvic organs and structures.
Results: The signal intensity of the lesions on T1-weighted images was hypointense to the surrounding muscle and myometrium in 5 patients, isointense in 3 and hyperintense in 1. On T2-weighted images the signal intensity was hyperintense (n = 6) or heterogeneous (n = 3). A thin rim (1-3 mm) with hyperintensity on T1-weighted images was noted in the innermost aspect of the masses. Other findings were ill-defined margin, thickened wall, multiple internal septa, shading and gas collection. "Mesh-like" linear strands were noted in the pelvis in all patients, with involvement of adjacent pelvic organs in 7 and lymphadenopathy in 3.
Conclusions: In this limited number of cases MR imaging showed great potential for demonstrating the extent of the disease, characterizing the lesions and making a specific diagnosis.
