    Abstract To secure high-quality education for healthcare professionals, the teaching and learning processes-the "how" in education-should be informed by a research base. Although Swedish medical education research is growing, it lacks a national strategy. This study analysed and compared Swedish and Dutch production of medical education articles over ten years in nine core journals, including the number of editorial board members.  During the period 2012-2021, Swedish authors produced 217 articles, whereas Dutch authors published 1,441. The journals had 466 board members, of which 31 (7%) were Dutch and four (<1%) Swedish. The results show that medical education in Swedish medical faculties requires improvement. To ensure high-quality education opportunities, we propose a national effort to strengthen the educational research base, using the Dutch effort as inspiration.

    Медицинские учебные заведения в Швеции пересматривают свои учебныепрограммы подготовки специалистов с целью вовлечения учащихся в болееактивное и мультидисциплинарное обучение и улучшения интеграциифундаментальных научных знаний и клинического опыта. Это связанос меняющимися потребностями пациентов, ростом заболеваемости ираспространенности хронических заболеваний и полиморбидности,распространением новых знаний и технологий, изменением практики оказанияпомощи и новым толкованием педагогики. Реформы учебных программявляются совместным усилием правительства и университетов, поставщиковмедицинских услуг, организаций пациентов и профессиональных организаций.В настоящее время широко признается потребность в новых и основныхкомпетенциях. Реформа определила необходимость упреждающего леченияхронических заболеваний, усиления внимания к профилактике заболеванийи укреплению здоровья, критического мышления, непрерывного повышениякачества оказываемых услуг, подготовки врачей общей практики, развитиянавыков общения и организации работы в многопрофильной команде. Этоозначает, что практическое обучение постепенно переходит от условийстационара в сферу первичной медико-санитарной помощи.

    Medical schools in Sweden are revising their medical curricula to involve students in more active and multidisciplinary learning and to better integrate basic science and clinical experiences. This is in response to changing needs in patients, rising incidence and prevalence of chronic diseases and multimorbidity, the proliferation of new knowledge and technologies, changing practice environments and new understandings of pedagogy. These reforms are a joint effort by the government and universities, health care providers, patient organizations and professional organizations. It has been recognized that new and main competencies are required. The reform identified the need for pro-active chronic disease management, increased emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion, critical thinking, continuous quality improvement, generalist competencies, communication skills and multidisciplinary teamwork. This means that practice-based learning is gradually moving from hospital settings to primary care.

    Title translation A new internationally harmonized Swedish basic medical education.
    Abstract The Swedish Parliament and Government has recently sanctioned a new 6 year undergraduate medical degree leading directly to license, followed by a 12 month introduction to work as a certified doctor. The undergraduate education is internationally harmonized and the 23 learning outcomes address competence needs in future Swedish and international health-care. Particular attention is given to professional competence, critical thinking, team-work and health promotion. All 23 learning outcomes must be documented before the University can issue a MD degree. After license, the doctor applies for a 12 month introduction to employment as doctor in the Swedish health-care system. This introduction is mandatory for all, regardless of the country where the license was issued. The introduction comprises clinical service in general medicine, emergency medicine and elective disciplines. Assessment of 10 learning outcomes is carried out in a formative wav by experienced and trained clinicians during the clinical service. After the introduction, the doctor is duly qualified to apply for specialist training.
