    Abstract The top management team (TMT) of family firms is divided into two groups: family and non-family executives. Each group of executives is driven by different and multiple goals and motivations with distinct strategic innovation decision preferences. The centralized ownership and control of firms confer natural authority on family executives, and the appropriateness of the structural power distribution in the TMT has a significant impact on the level of participation and contribution of non-family executives to corporate innovation strategies that affects the innovation performance of family firms. Based on research of the power distribution of TMTs, this paper argues that a balanced structural power distribution (titles, compensation, representation) between family and non-family executives can improve the TMT interaction process, integrate information and knowledge of non-family executives, help balance economic and non-economic goals, and increase innovation performance. Moreover, we posit that this relationship becomes stronger with increasing board independence and environmental dynamism. We find support for these proposed relationships using a sample of publicly traded family firms in China representing 2,379 firm-year observations from 2009 to 2018. The implications of these findings extend to both family business and TMT research. and we offer practical guidance to encourage professional managers to actively participate in strategic decision-making and planned execution in family firms.

    Abstract Background: There is currently a lack of biological markers to determine the risk of lymph node metastasis in breast cancer. A single long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) cannot accurately describe the heterogeneity of tumors. Thus, more accurate algorithms are needed to screen key pathogenic lncRNAs, and quantitative models are needed to describe the heterogeneity of breast cancer.
    Methods: A whole transcriptome sequencing data set of breast cancer tissue samples was downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas database (n=1,091). A weighted correlation network analysis was conducted to identify the hub lncRNAs associated with lymph node metastasis. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to construct the risk score model. The relationship between the risk scores and the key lncRNAs and the infiltration of the immune cell subtypes was also explored.
    Results: A total of 3 common lncRNAs were identified between the differentially expressed lncRNA set and the hub lncRNA set; that is, zinc finger protein 582-antisense RNA 1 (ZNF582-AS1), metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1), and actin filament associated protein 1-antisense RNA 1 (AFAP1-AS1). The following formula was used to calculate the risk score: risk score =1.31 + 0.51 * ZNF582-AS1 - 0.66 * MALAT1 - 0.50 * AFAP1-AS1. The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that the areas under the curve for the risk score, ZNF582-AS1, MALAT1, and AFAP1-AS1 were 0.975, 0.793, 0.685, and 0764, respectively (P<0.05). The risk score was positively correlated with immune cell subtype infiltration.
    Conclusions: ZNF582-AS1, MALAT1, and AFAP1-AS1 are the key lncRNAs involved in the lymph node metastasis of breast cancer. Our risk score model, which was based on ZNF582-AS1, MALAT1 and AFAP1-AS1, can accurately predict the risk of breast cancer lymph node metastasis. ZNF582-AS1, MALAT1, and AFAP1-AS1 are potential biomarkers for the lymph node metastasis of breast cancer.

    Abstract Background. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a global public health challenge resulting in considerable morbidity and mortality. AKI on chronic kidney disease (CKD) (AKI on CKD, A on C) accounts for about a third of total AKI. For severe AKI grade 3, renal replacement therapy (RRT) should be implemented in time. However, the lack of recognized drug treatment method for AKI grades 1–2 is a crucial problem in clinic. Chuan Huang Fang (CHF) is a Chinese herbal formulation developed for the treatment of A on C from the Shanghai Municipal Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Our previous studies suggested that CHF might effectively protect renal functions of A on C patients. As a widely used antioxidant in clinic, reduced glutathione (RG) is reported to improve the clinical efficacy of high-flux hemodialysis (HFHD) in severe AKI patients recently. To address the crucial problem mentioned above, thus we design a new clinical protocol of CHF combining RG and try to evaluate the efficacy and safety of this protocol in treating patients diagnosed with CKD stages 2–4 complicated with AKI grades 1–2. Methods. This is a multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial. We intend to enroll 162 participants, and these participants will be divided into the RG group, the CHF group, and the RG + CHF group randomly assigning 1 : 1 : 1 principle. The RG group will be general treatments combining RG, the CHF group will be general treatments combining CHF, and the RG + CHF group will be general treatments combining RG and CHF. The duration of treatment will last two weeks. The primary evaluation outcome will be the change in the slope of serum creatinine (Scr) over 2 weeks. Secondary evaluation outcomes include changes in blood urea nitrogen (BUN), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urinary AKI biomarkers (neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), interleukin-18 (IL-18), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GT), etc.), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) symptoms, inflammatory indicators, and oxidative stress ...

    Abstract Coastal areas around the world are under increasing environmental pressures from marine litter. In particular, tourism in coastal tourist areas suffers with waste littering on the coast, as well as in the water. Therefore, substantial costs are required for the handling of marine litter in order to achieve sustainable development in the tourism sector. The introduction of an entrance fee as an economic tool is a feasible way to provide alternative financing, in addition to limited government funding. The objective of this study was to estimate tourists’ willingness to pay (WTP) for visiting a marine litter-free coastal attraction, and examine the factors affecting the WTP. A questionnaire was employed using a single-bound dichotomous choice method on Libong Island, Thailand, between September and December 2020. A logistic model was used to estimate the WTP of the 1655 respondents. The mean WTP obtained is THB 92.24 per person per visit (approximately USD 3). The expected benefit of charging an entrance fee is THB 27.52 million (USD 0.88 million) for 2019. The factors influencing WTP are bid amount, age, education, monthly income, marine litter perception, and environmentally responsible behaviors. Associated initiatives were recommended to achieve coastal destination sustainability, including regular clean-up operations at beaches, seagrass beds, and surrounding waters; the placement and maintenance of litter facilities; and the promotion of marine litter awareness and environmentally responsible behaviors.

    Abstract Abstract Various polygenic risk scores (PRS) methods have been proposed to combine the estimated effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to predict genetic risks for common diseases, using data collected from genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Some methods require external individual-level GWAS dataset for parameter tuning, posing privacy and security-related concerns. Leaving out partial data for parameter tuning can also reduce model prediction accuracy. In this article, we propose PRStuning, a method that tunes parameters for different PRS methods using GWAS summary statistics from the training data. PRStuning predicts the PRS performance with different parameters, and then selects the best-performing parameters. Because directly using training data effects tends to overestimate the performance in the testing data, we adopt an empirical Bayes approach to shrinking the predicted performance in accordance with the genetic architecture of the disease. Extensive simulations and real data applications demonstrate PRStuning’s accuracy across PRS methods and parameters.

    Abstract Cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H) is the first key cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (P450) enzyme in the phenylpropanoid pathway. It belongs to the CYP73 family of P450 superfamily, and catalyzes the conversion of trans-cinnamic acid to p-coumaric acid. Since p-coumaric acid serves as the precursor for the synthesis of a wide variety of metabolites involved in plant development and stress resistance, alteration in the expression of soybean C4H genes is expected to affect the downstream metabolite levels, and its ability to respond to stress. In this study, we identified four C4H genes in the soybean genome that are distributed into both class I and class II CYP73 family. GmC4H2, GmC4H14 and GmC4H20 displayed tissue- and developmental stage-specific gene expression patterns with their transcript accumulation at the highest level in root tissues. GmC4H10 appears to be a pseudogene as its transcript was not detected in any soybean tissues. Furthermore, protein homology modelling revealed substrate docking only for GmC4H2, GmC4H14 and GmC4H20. To demonstrate the function of GmC4Hs, we modified a cloning vector for the heterologous expression of P450s in yeast, and used it for microsomal protein production and enzyme assay. Our results confirmed that GmC4H2, GmC4H14 and GmC4H20 contain the ability to hydroxylate trans-cinnamic acid with varying efficiencies.

    Abstract Retail transactions have become an integral part of the economic cycle of every country and even on a global scale. Retail transactions are a trade sector that has the potential to be developed continuously in the future. This research focused on building a specified and data-driven recommendation system based on customer-purchasing and product-selling behavior. Modified RFM analysis was used by adding two variables, namely periodicity and customer engagement index; clustering algorithm such as K-means clustering and Ward’s method; and association rules to determine the pattern of the cause–effect relationship on each transaction and four types of classifiers to apply and to validate the recommendation system. The results showed that based on customer behavior, it should be split into two groups: loyal and potential customers. In contrast, for product behavior, it also comprised three groups: bestseller, profitable, and VIP product groups. Based on the result, K-nearest neighbor is the most suitable classifier with a low chance of overfitting and a higher performance index.

    Abstract Introduction: Acute appendicitis is the most common general surgical emergency worldwide; however, its diagnosis remains challenging, particularly in rural or remote areas such as Tibet. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and applicability of the routine risk prediction models of acute appendicitis for rural Tibetan populations. Methods: Data of patients who underwent appendectomy at the Chaya People's Hospital between 1 April 2018 and 30 September 2021 were retrospectively collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with complicated appendicitis. The appendicitis risk prediction model scores for each patient were calculated by the binary logistic regression model based on the data. The index of union method was applied to identify the optimal cut-off value for the critical values of risk prediction models. Results: We included 127 patients with suspected acute appendicitis in the study, consisting of 96 surgically and 31 non-surgically treated. The diagnoses of 93 patients who underwent appendectomy included 55 (59.1%) cases of uncomplicated appendicitis. Patients with complicated appendicitis had a significantly longer postoperative hospital stay (11.0 (interquartile range 8.8-13.3) days v 8.0 (interquartile range 6.0-11.0) days; p<0.001) and higher hospital costs (US$2147.2 (interquartile range US$1625.1-2516.6) v US$1487.9 (interquartile range US$1202.6-1809.2); p24 hours, age >30 years, and male sex were independent risk factors associated with complicated appendicitis. The appendicitis inflammatory response score showed the best performance among the prediction models. Incorporating imaging features in the prediction models may provide better diagnostic value for appendicitis. Conclusion: Acute appendicitis in the rural Tibetan population has unique clinical features. To reduce the incidence of complicated appendicitis, local health workers must balance religious beliefs and professional services for residents.
