Abstract Carbamazepine (CBZ) has been identified in the aquatic environment as an emerging contaminant. Its immune effect across generations at environmentally relevant concentrations is little known. We aim to elucidate the effects of CBZ on the immune system in zebrafish (Danio rerio), hypothesizing the effects caused by CBZ exposure in the parental generation can be passed on to its offspring, leading to impairment of innate immune function and defense against pathogen weakened. A suite of bioassays (including a test with added lipopolysaccharide) was used to measure the effects of environmentally relevant levels of CBZ (1, 10, and 100 μg/l) on zebrafish at multiple biological levels, and across 2 successive generations (21 days exposure for F0; 5 and 21 days exposure or nonexposure for F1). The results showed that CBZ affected homeostasis in the immune system, caused liver vacuolization, increased the inflammation-related microbiota proportion in gut, and decreased reproduction, by induction of oxidative stress and modulation of Toll-like receptors (TLR) signaling pathway on gut-liver axis. The effects of exposure to CBZ over 21 days in F0 could be passed to the next generation. Intergenerational effects on TLR and antioxidant defense system were also observed in nonexposed F1 at 5 days post-fertilization (5 dpf), but diminished at 21 dpf. The finding provided evidence to unravel immune response by gut-liver axis mediated and oxidative stress under 4 test conditions. The study has raised a potential concern about the multigenerational immune effects of environmental pollutants and calls for a focus on the risk of synergetic pathogen infection.

Abstract Gene therapy has revolutionized the treatment of genetic diseases. Spearheading this revolution are sophisticated genome editing methods such as TALENs, ZFNs, and CRISPR-Cas, which trace their origins back to prokaryotic immune systems. Prokaryotes have developed various antiviral defense systems to combat viral attacks and the invasion of genetic elements. The comprehension of these defense mechanisms has paved the way for the development of indispensable tools in molecular biology. Among them, restriction endonuclease originates from the innate immune system of bacteria. The CRISPR-Cas system, a widely applied genome editing technology, is derived from the prokaryotic adaptive immune system. Single-base editing is a precise editing tool based on CRISPR-Cas system that involves deamination of target base. It is worth noting that prokaryotes possess deamination enzymes as part of their defense arsenal over foreign genetic material. Furthermore, prokaryotic Argonauts (pAgo) proteins, also function in anti-phage defense, play an important role in complementing the CRISPR-Cas system by addressing certain limitations it may have. Recent studies have also shed light on the significance of Retron, a reverse transcription transposon previously showed potential in genome editing, has also come to light in the realm of prokaryotic immunity. These noteworthy findings highlight the importance of studying prokaryotic immune system for advancing genome editing techniques. Here, both the origin of prokaryotic immunity underlying aforementioned genome editing tools, and potential applications of deaminase, pAgo protein and reverse transcriptase in genome editing among prokaryotes were introduced, thus emphasizing the fundamental mechanism and significance of prokaryotic immunity.

Abstract Background: Anxiety and postpartum depression are the most common psychological problems in women after delivery. Cognitive behavior intervention has been reported to have an effect in the therapy of postpartum depression. This research aimed to investigate whether cognitive behavior intervention could prevent the pathogenesis of postpartum depression in primiparous women.
Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, primiparous women who were prone to postpartum depression were recruited. Participates in the control group received routine postpartum care and those in the intervention group received both routine postpartum care and cognitive behavior intervention. Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were evaluated before and after the intervention.
Results: In the intervention group, the post-intervention scores of HAMA, HAMD, EPDS and PSQI were all significantly lower than the baseline scores (p = 0.034, p = 0.038, p = 0.004, p = 0.014, respectively). The proportion of participants with postpartum depression in the intervention group (11.5%) was significantly lower than the control group (24.3%) after the 6-week intervention. Participants in the intervention group were significantly more satisfied with the care than those in the control group (p = 0.032).
Conclusion: This research provided evidence that cognitive behavioral intervention in postpartum period could alleviate anxiety and depression in primiparous women, and inhibit the pathogenesis of postpartum depression. Trial registry This clinical trial was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2000040076).

Abstract Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is an urgent environmental problem, which endangers human health through the food chain. Bioremediation attracted extensive attention around the world due to the high cost-efficiency. However, the remediation efficiency of different plant and earthworm species of soil Cd pollution is still unclear, it is thus of great significance to explore the combined effects of different remediation plants and earthworm species to improve the bioremediation capacity. In the present study, we consequently selected three species of Cd hyperaccumulator plants (vetiver, P. vittata and S. emarginatum) and three species of earthworms (E. fetida P1, E. fetida P2, and P. guillelmi) to compare the differences in Cd accumulation among various earthworm-plant combinations. Results indicated that the changes of soil pH and SOM in plant-animal combined application induced the higher soil Cd removal efficiency. The Cd removal efficiency showed highest in combination groups P. vittata-E. fetida P2 and P. vittata-P. guillelmi. Meanwhile, the improvements of biomass of plants and animals also were consistent with the increasing of Cd concentration in both plants and earthworms after combined application. It showed that the Cd concentrations in P. vittata were the highest while the TFs of Cd in S. emarginatum displays significantly more than that in others. In conclusion, the recommended combined system of earthworm-plant (P. vittata-E. fetida P2 and P. vittata-P. guillelmi) to provide reference for soil Cd bioremediation system in practice.

Abstract The uneven distribution and spatial mismatch between water and land resources (WLR) limit the utilization efficiency of agricultural water and land resources (AWLR), and then pose a threat to food production. There is a critical need to understand their matching characteristics for strategic resource allocation decisions and management. In this study, a holistic index (RSI) derived from resource equivalency analysis (REA) was developed which contributed to examine the abundance or deficiency of agricultural water and land resources (AWLR) based on the conception of generalized water resources (including blue water and green water). Results indicate that the matching degree of AWLR was the lowest in Northeast China, North China and Gansu in Northwest China, while the highest value was in Xinjiang due to the higher blue water use. In north China, other provinces suffered water scarcity except in Jilin, Liaoning, Henan, while all provinces in south China suffered land scarcity except in Tibet and Jiangsu. Meanwhile, the matching of AWLR was not exactly consistent with the distribution pattern of precipitation. The higher proportion of green water resources was not located in southeast China with rich precipitation; it had to do with water management. Too much or little water resources can result in the increasing of blue water use. The proposed approach can be a powerful instrument to implement public policies and management strategy as an attempt to improve the utilization efficiency and enhance the optimize-allocation of AWLR.

Abstract Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most commonly used phthalate and is ubiquitous in surface water. Based on its well-established toxicological profile, many countries and regions have adopted specific environmental quality standard (EQS) for DEHP. In China, the EQS value for DEHP is 8 μg/L. However, information on isomers structurally similar to DEHP is limited. Among the isomers of DEHP, di-isooctyl phthalate (DIOP) and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) have received limited attention. The goal of this paper was to study effects and toxic potencies of DEHP, DIOP, and DnOP to individuals and predict effects on populations of female Daphnia magna (cladoceran crustacea) in media containing environmentally relevant concentrations of single PAEs for three consecutive generations (21 days for every generation). Exposure to all three PAEs resulted in reduced survival and reproduction and cause collapse of populations at the highest concentrations. DnOP was the most potent for causing adverse effects followed by DIOP, while DEHP was the least potent. 8 μg DnOP/L were found to reduce the population size by 37 % in the F

Abstract This study was conducted in response to the current situation in our country in which neonicotinoid pesticides (NNIs) are used in large quantities and their concentration in surface water is gradually increasing. Based on the species sensitivity distribution (SSD), the hazard quotient (HQ) and probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) were used to compare single and mixture risks of NNIs in the surface water in China. The target and recommended values of NNIs in China's surface water quality supervision were also presented. The results showed that:① in the single acute hazard assessment, imidacloprid (IMI) was the most harmful insecticide, and in the single chronic hazard assessment, imidacloprid (IMI) and acetamiprid (ACE) were more harmful. Furthermore, insects were the most sensitive creatures. ② Hainan province was the region with the highest single acute and chronic hazard in the study area. ③ Based on the joint probability curves of five neonicotinoids, the probability in which 5% of species would be affected by long-term exposure was approximately 91.12%. Thus, the combined ecological risk of these five neonicotinoids cannot be ignored. ④ Based on the toxicity reference value from SSD and the combined results of HQ and PRA, the regulatory values of surface water quality in China were as follows:acetamiprid (ACE) 0.04 μg·L

Abstract The compression and insulation properties of down are crucial and need to be further explored. This article describes the average number and length of barbs increasing from 67 to 100 and from 11.90 to 26.00 mm with a rise of single down mass, respectively. The mass of a single down is lognormal, and the average value and maximum probability value of individual down mass are 1.46 and 0.62 mg, respectively. There is no significant difference in α helix or β sheet contents through peak deconvolution of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the barbs and barbules. The compression recovery rates of single down are 58.29% and 58.94% in the x–x and y–y directions, respectively, due to the almost same structure in both directions. Further, the compression recovery rates of down with filling masses of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g decreased by 6.79%, 5.00%, and 7.31% after five consecutive compression cycles, respectively. The thermal conductivity of the down assembly first decreases to 0.024 W · m⁻¹ · °C⁻¹ and then increased with the compressive deformation, because the relative density and contact points of down fibers are changing. The study into the morphology structure, compression, and thermal properties of down will inspire the design and development of future synthetic insulation materials.
