    Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented threat to the mental health of youth due to its attendant, drastic changes in everyday life brought about by restrictions such as social distancing and the cancelation of in-person classes. Although numerous articles have discussed the impact of the pandemic on youths' mental health, most of them have been opinion pieces. This study used state-wide empirical data to quantify the direct and indirect effect of the pandemic on the mental health of confined youth, a vulnerable social group that is rarely represented in school survey data. Group comparisons of youth who entered juvenile justice facilities during pandemic and non-pandemic times were also conducted. Findings revealed that youth who entered residential facilities during the pandemic due to criminal offenses had higher rates of prior mental health problems and victimization. With major confounders controlled, multivariate regression results showed that the impact of the pandemic on confined youths' mental health is indirect: it conditioned the effect of underage drinking on the youths' mental health. Youth who were admitted into facilities during the pandemic were more likely to experience mental health problems than their peers who entered facilities during non-pandemic times. Implications for policymaking are discussed.

    Abstract This study employs a Bayesian panel vector autoregressive model to examine the impact of economic uncertainty on public health, using an annual, country-level panel dataset of 103 emerging markets and developing countries spanning the years 1995 through 2019. The results from the full sample suggest that the immediate effects of heightened economic uncertainty on health are marginal, yet it may engender prolonged life expectancy and lowered mortality rates. The analysis unveils considerable heterogeneities among various country classifications. The health-enhancing effects of economic uncertainty are predominantly discernible in emerging markets, low-income and upper-middle-income countries. Additionally, a diminution in suicide rates, attributed to escalated economic uncertainty, is uniquely detected in upper-middle-income countries. Furthermore, economic growth and healthcare expenditure emerge as paramount determinants in bolstering overall population health, particularly in lower-middle-income countries. The detrimental effect of environmental pollution on health is more pronounced in emerging markets and middle-income nations. Excluding high-income countries, it is essential to emphasize the beneficial health outcomes resulting from financial development and globalization, as well as the deleterious effects of environmental pollution. Lastly, several policy implications aligned with the findings are outlined, providing a roadmap for decision-makers in these diverse economies to promote better health outcomes.

    Abstract Peer influence is generally understood to be one of the primary predictors of crime and delinquency. It is unclear, however, whether the mechanism that connects peer association, endorsement of deviant values, and delinquent behavior applies equally across different age and sex groups. This study examined age- and gender-specific susceptibility to delinquent and prosocial peer influence using a sample of justice-involved individuals. Based on multigroup structural equation modeling, the author found the nexus among peer association, endorsement of deviant values, and violent delinquency varied across gender and age groups. Among adult male respondents, delinquent peers strengthened deviant culture whereas prosocial peers inhibited that culture. Among juvenile respondents, deviant culture was not inhibited by relationships with prosocial peers. The results for adult females showed no significant influence by either delinquent or prosocial peers.

    Abstract Having a mental health (MH) or substance use (SU) issue can make the transition from prison to the community a challenging process. Despite this, few studies have quantified how justice-involved individuals with mental health issues only, substance use only, those with both struggles, and those with neither are uniquely affected. Using a sample of re-entering men who were released from twelve state prisons in the United States, we assessed the effects of having MH and SU issues on their drug use during re-entry. Furthermore, we examined their differing coping reactions to housing insecurity, joblessness, and family tension after release. The results demonstrated that respondents' risk of SU during re-entry was associated with MH and SU issues measured at release. Those with co-occurring MH and SU challenges were at the highest risk of SU during re-entry. Furthermore, challenging life situations during re-entry exerted an amplified effect on SU for respondents with both anxiety and SU issues. The findings suggest that post-incarcerated individuals with co-occurring MH and SU issues have the highest risk of SU, and their reaction to re-entry barriers is distinct from their peers. Quality services to address co-occurring MH and SU may be needed to facilitate a smooth transition from prison to the community.

    Abstract Studies have associated the development of pulmonary leukemia with the activation of the complement system. However, the roles and mechanisms of complement system-related genes (CSRGs) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have not been investigated extensively. This study used The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-AML and GSE37642 datasets. Differentially expressed CSRGs (CSRDEGs) were identified by overlapping genes differentially expressed between the high and low CSRG score groups and key module genes identified in a weighted gene co-expression network analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox analyses identified CSRG-related biomarkers, which were used to build a prognostic model. After gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA), immune-related and drug-sensitivity analyses were performed in the high- and low-risk groups. Four prognosis-related biomarkers were identified and used to develop a prognostic model: MEOX2, IGFBP5, CH25H, and RAB3B. The model's performance was verified in a test cohort (a subset of samples from the TCGA-AML dataset) and a validation cohort (GSE37642). The GSEA revealed that the high-risk group was mainly enriched for Golgi organization and cytokine-cytokine receptor interactions, and the low-risk group was mainly enriched in the hedgehog signaling pathway and spliceosome. Lastly, two immune cells were found to show differential infiltration between risk groups, which correlated with the risk scores. M1 macrophage infiltration was significantly positively correlated with RAB3B expression. Sensitivity to 36 drugs differed significantly between risk groups. This study screened four CSRG-related biomarkers (MEOX2, IGFBP5, CH25H, and RAB3B) to provide a basis for predicting AML prognosis.

    Abstract HTP test in psychometrics is a widely studied and applied psychological assessment technique. HTP test is a kind of projection test, which refers to the free expression of painting itself and its creativity. Therefore, the form of group psychological counselling is widely used in mental health education. Compared with traditional neural networks, deep learning networks have deeper and more network layers and can learn more complex processing functions. In this stage, image recognition technology can be used as an assistant of human vision. People can quickly get the information in the picture through retrieval. For example, you can take a picture of an object that is difficult to describe and quickly search the content related to it. Convolutional neural network, which is widely used in the image classification task of computer vision, can automatically complete feature learning on the data without manual feature extraction. Compared with the traditional test, the test can reflect the painting characteristics of different groups. After quantitative scoring, it has good reliability and validity. It has high application value in psychological evaluation, especially in the diagnosis of mental diseases. This paper focuses on the subjectivity of HTP evaluation. Convolutional neural network is a mature technology in deep learning. The traditional HTP assessment process relies on the experience of researchers to extract painting features and classification.

    Abstract Reduction of the 17,18-double bond in the D-ring during chlorophyll biosynthesis is catalyzed by the rare, naturally occurring photoenzyme protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase (POR). A conserved tyrosine residue has been suggested to donate a proton to C18 of the substrate in the past decades. Taylor and colleagues scrutinized the model with a powerful tool that utilized a modified genetic code to introduce fluorinated tyrosine analogues into POR. The presented results show that the suggested catalytically critical tyrosine is unlikely to participate in the reaction chemistry but is required for substrate binding, and instead, a cysteine residue preceding the lid helix is proposed to have the role of proton donor.

    Abstract Compared to a large body of literature on the location-sensitivity of policing, relatively less effort has been made to examine whether parole practice is intertwined with the context of neighborhood. Based on longitudinal data of released prisoners, the current study examines the location contingency of parole efficacy in the context of reentry, focusing on the outcomes of recidivism and illicit drug use. Findings suggest that net of the effects of risk factors such as financial difficulty and insufficient family support, respondents who returned to less cohesive communities reported receiving a significantly lower level of support from parole officers. Moreover, parole officers' support exhibited a significant protective effect against recidivism, and this protective effect was not universal but contextual: Parole officers' support demonstrated a diminished protective effect for released prisoners who returned to disordered communities. Implications for correction practice and policymaking are presented.
