Abstract This book identifies and analyzes the significant regional differences in suicide rates of various age groups and different sexes among Chinese rural residents. It goes beyond the analytic dichotomy in traditional Western suicide studies and argues that the phenomena of suicide among Chinese farmers are the result of a combination of social structure and social action, rather than being determined by either of these two factors alone. This study analyses suicide rates among young married women in rural areas as well as those of elderly people in rural areas. The responsive trend for the near future is also projected. The underlying dynamics and causal mechanisms of these phenomena are carefully analyzed using an innovative “structure – action theory” framework.

Abstract Wound infection is an inflammatory response of the host to pathogenic microorganisms. It is a complex pathological process that may manifest either as a rapid onset acute wound infection, or as a prolonged chronic wound infection. Infectious wounds refer to acute or chronic wounds where infection has occurred, and their diagnosis and treatment involve many links, any loopholes in any aspect can lead to treatment failure. How to improve the diagnosis and treatment level of infectious wounds? This article proposed and discussed several issues, such as biofilm and drug resistance of bacteria, new materials and new-type dressings, special types of infectious wounds, and the combined application of various treatment techniques that need attention, and intended to attract the attention of peers. At the same time, it advocated for full attention to research results in the relevant fields and continuously emerging new technologies, concepts, materials, and methods, and applying them to the diagnosis and treatment of infectious wounds to benefit the majority of patients.

Abstract Wildfire, climate and ecosystem are interactive components of the Earth system (Bowman et al 2009, Andela et al 2017). Climate and fuel moisture, which is heavily impacted by atmospheric conditions, are primary drivers for fire occurrence and behavior, while vegetation provides necessary fuels for combustion (Pyne et al 1996). On the other hand, fires can feedback climate and ecosystems by emitting carbon and aerosols (Kloster et al 2010, Ward et al 2012, Urbanski 2014), which can affect the global carbon cycle and atmospheric radiation. Removal of trees by fires and subsequent multiple-year vegetation regeneration modify albedo and leave area index (Gitas et al 2012, French et al 2016), which would further change the land–air fluxes of heat, water and momentum.

Abstract Milk provides a wide range of bioactive substances, such as antimicrobial peptides and proteins. Our study aimed to identify novel antimicrobial peptides naturally present in milk. The components of an endogenaus bovine milk peptide database were virtually screened for charge, amphipathy, and predicted secondary structure. Thus, 23 of 248 screened peptides were identified as candidates for antimicrobial effects. After commercial synthesis, their antimicrobial activities were determined agains...

Abstract DNA methylation profiling is a useful tool to increase the accuracy of a cancer diagnosis. However, a comprehensive R package specially for it is lacking. Hence, we developed the R package methylClass for methylation-based classification. Within it, we provide the eSVM (ensemble-based support vector machine) model to achieve much higher accuracy in methylation data classification than the popular random forest model and overcome the time-consuming problem of the traditional SVM. In addition, some novel feature selection methods are included in the package to improve the classification. Furthermore, because methylation data can be converted to other omics, such as copy number variation data, we also provide functions for multi-omics studies. The testing of this package on four datasets shows the accurate performance of our package, especially eSVM, which can be used in both methylation and multi-omics models and outperforms other methods in both cases. methylClass is available at: https://github.com/yuabrahamliu/methylClass.

Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive memory loss, neurodegeneration, and cognitive decline. Aging is one of the risk factors for AD. Although the mechanisms underlying aging and the incidence rate of AD are unclear, aging and AD share some hallmarks, such as oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. Cannabidiol (CBD), the major non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid extracted from Cannabis sativa, has recently emerged as a potential candidate for delaying aging and a valuable therapeutic tool for the treatment of aging-related neurodegenerative diseases due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammation properties. This article reviews the relevant literature on AD, CBD treatment for AD, cellular senescence, aging, and CBD treatment for aging in recent years. By analyzing these published data, we attempt to explore the complex correlation between cellular senescence, aging, and Alzheimer's disease, clarify the positive feedback effect between the senescence of neurocytes and Alzheimer's disease, and summarize the role and possible molecular mechanisms of CBD in preventing aging and treating AD. These data may provide new ideas on how to effectively prevent and delay aging, and develop effective treatment strategies for age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
