Abstract Memory alloy patella claws for treating patella fractures have been used for more than 30 years with many desirable features including fast healing, quick recovery, and avoidance of top abrasion of Kirschner wires and other complications. However, there are many models and it is difficult to choose the accurate claw for the patient. In this study, a finite element model of the butterfly-shaped patellar claw made of shape memory alloy was established, its mechanical structure was analyzed, and its clinical application was monitored. We used Solidworks Simulation software for modeling and mainly analyzed the force of the compression ring of the butterfly-shaped patellar claw. Clinically, we chose a closed fresh patella fracture case. After finite element analysis, the maximum stress that the compression ring of the butterfly-shaped patellar claw can withstand is 568.1 MPa. In this range, it always has elastic deformation resistance. The butterfly-shaped patella claw is fixed on the patella and will not break when subjected to a maximum force of 150 N on the encircling arm, and at the same time, there will be no pressure failure due to plastic deformation. A total of 27 cases were clinically used for the assessment of the clinical efficacy of the newly designed butterfly-shaped patella claws. The average follow-up time was 15.5 months, and the average fracture healing time was 8-12 weeks. All patients can get out of bed with crutches within 2 to 3 days after surgery. Among them, there were 15 cases with excellent functional ratings, 10 cases with good ratings, 2 cases with acceptable ratings, and no cases with poor ratings. The designed butterfly-shaped patella claws can provide an effective method for the treatment of patella fractures.

Abstract A reinforcement learning (RL) based method that enables the robot to accomplish the assembly-type task with safety regulations is proposed. The overall strategy consists of grasping and assembly, and this paper mainly considers the assembly strategy. Force feedback is used instead of visual feedback to perceive the shape and direction of the hole in this paper. Furthermore, since the emergency stop is triggered when the force output is too large, a force-based dynamic safety lock (DSL) is proposed to limit the pressing force of the robot. Finally, we train and test the robot model with a simulator and build ablation experiments to illustrate the effectiveness of our method. The models are independently tested 500 times in the simulator, and we get an 88.57% success rate with a 4mm gap. These models are transferred to the real world and deployed on a real robot. We conducted independent tests and obtained a 79.63% success rate with a 4mm gap. Simulation environments: https://github.com/0707yiliu/peg-in-hole-with-RL.

Abstract Exploring structural and component evolution remains a challenging scientific problem for nanoscience. We propose a novel approach called principle of minimization of structure matching polymerization (SMP) change to rapidly explore the global minimum structure on the potential energy surface (PES). The new method can map low-dimensional stable structures to high-dimensional local minima, and this will make it possible for us to study the growth mechanisms of nanoparticles. Some new lowest-energy structures were found by SMP methods for sulfuric acid (SA)-dimethylamine (DMA) systems relative to previous studies. Additionally, we found that the growth process of boron clusters is mainly that the small-size boron clusters are continuously added to large-size boron clusters by structure matching for B

Abstract Monitoring joystick operations in power wheelchairs (PWCs) is promising for investigating user-wheelchair interaction and providing quantitative measures to assess the user's driving performance. In this paper, an add-on measurement system, Power Wheelchair Maneuvering Logger (PWhML), is developed to provide an easy-to-implement and cost-effective solution for monitoring the user's joystick operations in PWCs. The proposed system uses two compact inertial measurement units (IMUs), which are respectively attached to the joystick and wheelchair armrest for movement sensing. A coordinate transformation-based method is proposed to estimate the joystick operating angles using the acceleration data measured by the attached IMUs. The accuracy of the proposed method was thoroughly evaluated under different conditions. The evaluation trials in a stationary PWC reported a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.59° in the forward/backward direction and 0.64° in the leftward/rightward direction, validating the established geometry model for coordinate transformation. The subsequent driving experiments on outdoor test courses demonstrated the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method in various terrain conditions (MAE of less than 3°). A clustering analysis based on the t-distributed stochastic neighborhood embedding method correctly categorized different driving activities using the joystick operating angles measured by PWhML. These results indicate that integrating the developed PWhML into PWCs can facilitate a quantitative measurement of the user's driving behavior, providing valuable insights to identify careless operation patterns and help PWC users to improve driving performance.

Abstract Robotization has caused widespread concern about job losses, but few scholars have paid attention to changes in employment quality. This study provides supplementary evidences on the impact of robotization on youth employment quality and compares the effectiveness of various measures. Using data about individual employment and robot usage in China, this study finds that robotization reduces youth employment quality, especially for males and the middle-educated, aged 26 to 35, and in regions with insufficient workers. The substitution effect, skill preparation effect, and productivity effect play important roles in this process. Besides the common strategy of education, the mitigating capabilities of skill training has been demonstrated, but self-entrepreneurship has not. This study suggests that the exploration of various youth self-development measures, such as skill training, is warranted to improve employment quality.
