    Abstract BACKGROUND: The separation of furfural from a low‐concentration multicomponent and acid‐containing aqueous solution is a highly demanding process; traditional distillation requires an excessive amount of energy. Herein, we demonstrated ZIF‐8‐derived microporous carbon (C) as a promising adsorbent for the separation of furfural using adsorption isotherms, dynamic column adsorption, adsorption kinetics and desorption studies. RESULTS: In the competitive adsorption kinetics experiments with a furfural/acetic acid concentration of 50/20 g L⁻¹, the acetic acid adsorbed in the micropores of NCZIF‐₈1000C‐800A gradually was replaced by furfural, whereas the amount of acetic acid in the mesopores of NCZIF‐₈800C‐800A slowly increased. In addition, the micropores of NCZIF‐₈1000C‐800A exhibited highly efficient and fast adsorption characteristics toward furfural over a wide furfural/acetic acid concentration range (0–50/0–20 g L⁻¹) with the furfural adsorption capacity reaching an adsorption equilibrium within 10 min. The results show that the high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area of NCZIF‐₈1000C‐800A is responsible for the high furfural adsorption capacity (1205.3 mg g⁻¹) and the confined microporous structure can strengthen the π–π interactions between porous C and furfural, thereby enhancing the selectivity of furfural/acetic acid (61.4) in the furfural/acetic acid (50/20 g L⁻¹) dynamic column adsorption system. Meanwhile, the desorption ratio of furfural in the dynamic desorption system reached as high as 98.6%. CONCLUSION: The unique micropore‐confinement effect and excellent adsorption behavior make NCZIF‐₈1000C‐800A an efficient adsorbent for furfural in the furfural–acetic acid system. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).

    Abstract Background: Recently, a locking plate (LP) combined with a suture button was applied for distal clavicle Neer type IIb fractures. However, to our knowledge, there is limited information on clinical outcomes surrounding locking plates combined with a suture button in the treatment of Neer type IIb distal clavicle fractures. The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes among three different fixation techniques for the treatment of Neer type IIb distal clavicle fractures.
    Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 53 patients with Neer type IIb distal clavicle fractures who were treated with a hook plate (HP group, 16 patients), a locking plate alone (LP group, 18 patients), or a locking plate with a suture button (LPSB group, 19 patients) in our hospital between March 2014 and August 2019. The clinical and radiological outcomes were evaluated, including union time, postoperative complications, and function of the shoulder joint.
    Results: The follow-up period was at least 2 years for all patients. All patients in the LPSB group achieved bone healing at the final follow-up. No significant differences were observed, including age, sex, side, time to surgery, duration of surgery, and mean follow-up period among the three groups (
    Conclusion: Compared with HP and LP alone, LPSB yields better clinical outcomes and lower complication rates in the treatment of Neer type IIb distal clavicle fractures.

    Abstract Background: Probiotics have proven beneficial in a number of immune-mediated and allergic diseases. Several human studies have evaluated the efficacy and safety of probiotics in allergic rhinitis; however, evidence for their use has yet to be firmly established.
    Objective: We undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis aiming to address the effect and safety of probiotics on allergic rhinitis.
    Methods: We systematically searched databases [MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials] from inception until June 1, 2021. Qualified literature was selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, the data were extracted, and a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted.
    Results: Twenty-eight studies were included. The results showed that probiotics significantly relieved allergic rhinitis symptoms (standardized mean difference [SMD], -0.29, 95% confidence interval (CI) [-0.44, -0.13];
    Conclusions: To sum up, probiotic supplement seems to be effective in ameliorating allergic rhinitis symptoms and improving the quality of life, but there is high heterogeneity in some results after subgroup analysis and clinicians should be cautious when recommending probiotics in treating allergic rhinitis.

    Abstract Objectives: Skeletal class II malocclusion is one of the most common malocclusions. Among the functional appliances for skeletal class II malocclusion, the Twin-Block appliance with a maxillary expander is effective in repositioning the mandible forward. In this study, we focused our efforts on investigating the effects of Twin-Block appliances with maxillary expanders on the upper airway in growing children with skeletal class II malocclusion by tracing and measuring lateral cephalograms after evaluating the consistency of three-dimensional CBCT data and two-dimensional lateral cephalogram data.
    Materials and methods: A total of 102 patients ranging from 9 to 15 years old (11.37 ± 2.80, male/female ratio = 1:1) with skeletal class II malocclusion were selected to evaluate the consistency of CBCT data and lateral cephalogram data. The strongly and moderately correlated segments were then selected to study the effects of Twin-Block with a maxillary expander on the upper airway in 66 growing children with skeletal class II malocclusion (11.31 ± 1.23 years old, male/female ratio = 1:1) by lateral cephalograms.
    Results: The results showed a strong significant correlation in the nasopharynx (r = 0.708) and moderate significant correlations in the overall upper airway (r = 0.641), palatopharynx (r = 0.553), and glossopharynx (r = 0.575) but a weak correlation in the hypopharynx (r = 0.323). The corresponding determination coefficient (R
    Conclusions: Lateral cephalograms can reflect the volume of the nasopharynx and oropharynx in skeletal class II children to a certain extent, while Twin-Block appliances with maxillary expanders can widen the volume of the nasopharynx and oropharynx significantly.
    Clinical relevance: The lateral cephalogram is reliable for analyzing the nasopharynx, palatopharynx, and glossopharynx in orthodontic clinical practice. Twin-Block appliances with maxillary expanders have a positive effect on skeletal class II patients with airway stenosis.

    Abstract Osteogenic scaffolds reproducing the natural bone composition, structures, and properties have represented the possible frontier of artificially orthopedic implants with the great potential to revolutionize surgical strategies against the bone-related diseases. However, it is difficult to achieve an all-in-one formula with the simultaneous requirement of favorable biocompatibility, flexible adhesion, high mechanical strength, and osteogenic effects. Here in this work, an osteogenic hydrogel scaffold fabricated by inorganic-in-organic integration between amine-modified bioactive glass (ABG) nanoparticles and poly(ethylene glycol) succinimidyl glutarate-polyethyleneimine (TSG-PEI) network was introduced as an all-in-one tool to flexibly adhere onto the defective tissue and subsequently accelerate the bone formation. Since the N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS)-ester of tetra-PEG-SG polymer could quickly react with the NH

    Abstract Chitosan (Ch)-based edible composite films were prepared by incorporating blending wampee seed essential oil (WSEO) into a Ch matrix, using the incorporation ratio as a variable. The physical, mechanical properties, structure morphology and rheological properties were determined using tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EB), water vapor permeability (WVP) tests together with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and apparent viscosity and shear rate. In addition, the antimicrobial, antioxidant activities were investigated by the DPPH & ABTS radicals scavenging and inhibition zone assays, respectively. Compared with Ch, the incorporation of WSEO significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the TS, EB, and WVP values, especially when the WSEO ratio reached 1.0 % or higher. Meanwhile, the films exhibited greatly improved visible light barrier performance after WSEO incorporation. Both FTIR spectroscopy and SEM observations reflected the crosslinking between WSEO and Ch. Meanwhile, the composite films demonstrated smaller particle size and weaker rheological viscosities, which enhanced the antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities when compared with those of Ch. Therefore, this study suggested that WSEO incorporated with Ch is an effective ingredient for the preparation of edible films with enhanced physicochemical and biological properties.

    Abstract Previously, we identified a series of steroids (1–6) that showed potent anti-virus activities against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with IC₅₀ values ranging from 3.23 to 0.19 µM. In this work, we first semi-synthesized and characterized the single isomer of 5, 25(R)-26-acetoxy-3β,5α-dihydroxycholest-6-one, named as (25R)-5, in seven steps from a commercially available compound diosgenin (7), with a total yield of 2.8%. Unfortunately, compound (25R)-5 and the intermediates only showed slight inhibitions against RSV replication at the concentration of 10 µM, but they possessed potent cytotoxicity activities against human bladder cancer 5637 (HTB-9) and hepatic cancer HepG2, with IC₅₀ values ranging from 3.0 to 15.5 µM without any impression of normal liver cell proliferation at 20 µM. Among them, the target compound (25R)-5 possessed cytotoxicity activities against 5637 (HTB-9) and HepG2 with IC₅₀ values of 4.8 µM and 15.5 µM, respectively. Further studies indicated that compound (25R)-5 inhibited cancer cell proliferation through inducing early and late-stage apoptosis. Collectively, we have semi-synthesized, characterized and biologically evaluated the 25R-isomer of compound 5; the biological results suggested that compound (25R)-5 could be a good lead for further anti-cancer studies, especially for anti-human liver cancer.
