    Abstract Unsupervised hashing has received extensive research focus on the past decade, which typically aims at preserving a predefined metric (i.e. Euclidean metric) in the Hamming space. To this end, the encoding functions of the existing hashing are typically quasi-isometric, which devote to reducing the quantization loss from the target metric space to the discrete Hamming space. However, it is indeed problematic to directly minimize such error, since such mentioned two metric spaces are heterogeneous, and the quasi-isometric mapping is non-linear. The former leads to inconsistent feature distributions, while the latter leads to problematic optimization issues. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised hashing method, termed Sparsity-Induced Generative Adversarial Hashing (SiGAH), to encode large-scale high-dimensional features into binary codes, which well solves the two problems through a generative adversarial training framework. Instead of minimizing the quantization loss, our key innovation lies in enforcing the learned Hamming space to have similar data distribution to the target metric space via a generative model. In particular, we formulate a ReLU-based neural network as a generator to output binary codes and an MSE-loss based auto-encoder network as a discriminator, upon which a generative adversarial learning is carried out to train hash functions. Furthermore, to generate the synthetic features from the hash codes, a compressed sensing procedure is introduced into the generative model, which enforces the reconstruction boundary of binary codes to be consistent with that of original features. Finally, such generative adversarial framework can be trained via the Adam optimizer. Experimental results on four benchmarks, i.e., Tiny100K, GIST1M, Deep1M, and MNIST, have shown that the proposed SiGAH has superior performance over the state-of-the-art approaches.

    Abstract The development of both animals and plants relies on populations of pluripotent stem cells that provide the cellular raw materials for organ and tissue formation. Plant stem cell reservoirs are housed at the shoot and root tips in structures called meristems, with the shoot apical meristem (SAM) continuously producing aerial leaf, stem, and flower organs throughout the life cycle. Thus, the SAM acts as the engine of plant development and has unique structural and molecular features that allow it to balance self-renewal with differentiation and act as a constant source of new cells for organogenesis while simultaneously maintaining a stem cell reservoir for future organ formation. Studies have identified key roles for intercellular regulatory networks that establish and maintain meristem activity, including the KNOX transcription factor pathway and the CLV-WUS stem cell feedback loop. In addition, the plant hormones cytokinin and auxin act through their downstream signaling pathways in the SAM to integrate stem cell activity and organ initiation. This review discusses how the various regulatory pathways collectively orchestrate SAM function and touches on how their manipulation can alter stem cell activity to improve crop yield.

    Abstract (1) Background: The mental health of female healthcare workers is at greater risk during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased psychological stress and heightened work–family conflict. This study investigated whether resilience, as a protective factor for mental health, can safeguard the well-being of female healthcare workers. This study assessed the mental health of female healthcare workers ( n = 431) from a small inland city in Central China, explored the impact of work–family conflict on their mental health, and examined the moderating role of resilience. (2) Methods: The main variables were measured using standard tools administered via an online survey. A one-sample t -test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and multiple regression were performed with SPSS. A simple slope test was conducted based on the multiple regression results. (3) Results: The analysis revealed that the mental health level of the surveyed female healthcare workers was significantly lower than the national norm (t = 16.36, p < 0.001). Work–family conflict had a significant negative impact on mental health (β = 0.39, p < 0.001), while the interaction effect of resilience and work–family conflict was significant (β = −0.13, p < 0.05), suggesting a moderating effect. (4) Conclusions: Female healthcare workers exhibited poor mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, but resilience remained a protective factor, mitigating the negative impact of work–family conflict on female healthcare workers’ mental health.

    Abstract Introduction: With population aging, taking care of the older adults has become a challenge for many countries and regions, and smart care for older adults is considered as a solution to this problem. Need is an important factor that determines whether the model of smart care for older adults can be efficiently promoted and ultimately help in effective senior care.
    Methods: Based on a survey among older adults and their caregivers in Macao, this paper conducted comparative and correlation studies on the awareness, use, and need of smart care goods and services for older adults.
    Results: Differences appeared among the groups based on the different categories and items of goods and services. The respondents' awareness, use, and need of smart senior care were generally low, and levels were lower among older adults than among caregivers; older adults were more concerned about spiritual needs, while the caregivers were more concerned about the health and safety of older adults. Correlation studies showed that awareness of smart senior care was positively related to its use, and these two variables were positively correlated to the need for smart senior care.
    Implications: This paper fills in the research gap on the need for smart senior care and can help to promote matching supply and demand to enhance the development of the smart senior care industry.

    Abstract Single cell protein (SCP) is a promising alternative protein source, as its production bypasses the disadvantages of animal protein production in industrial agriculture. Coupling a fast-growing hydrogen consuming organism with microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) could be a viable method for SCP production. In this study, a fast-growing and protein-rich methanogen, Methanococcus maripaludis was selected as the primary SCP source. The inoculation of M. maripaludis in MECs triggered cell synthesis with methane production. The doubling time measured was 11.2 h and the specific growth rate was 0.062 1/h. The highest SCP production rate was 13.7 mg/L/h. In the dried biomass, the weight of protein was over 60 %. Amino acid profiling of the harvested biomass demonstrated high abundance of essential amino acids. The electron flux analysis indicated that 31.3 % electrons in the electrochemical systems were directed into SCP synthesis. These results illustrated the potential for SCP production by coupling a fast-growing methanogen with MECs.

    Abstract Extrusion technology is widely utilized in the rubber processing industry, with the extruder serving as the core equipment. As mixed rubber enters the extruder, it undergoes conveyance and plasticization, ultimately forming specific shapes and dimensions upon extrusion. The extruder head is a crucial component, playing a key role in achieving the final product's required size and shape. Factors such as its structure, materials, and manufacturing processes significantly impact the efficiency, product quality, and sustainability of the extrusion process. However, prolonged operation leads to severe wear of the extruder head, adversely affecting rubber product quality. Additionally, extruder head processing poses challenges, with maintenance and repair being complex procedures. Therefore, exploring a wear-resistant, long-lasting metal material for the extruder head without compromising mixed rubber performance is essential. This study focuses on severely worn extruder head metal materials, comparing wear levels after friction with STELLITE 6 alloy, Hastelloy C-276 alloy, 38CrMoAlA, and tungsten carbide with composite rubber. Results show that compared to the NR/BR composite material after Hastelloy C-276 alloy friction, rubber Payne effect increased by 4.4% (38CrMoAl), 3.2% (STELLITE 6), and 4.6% (tungsten carbide). Similarly, rubber dispersion decreased by 9.4% (38CrMoAl), 4.7% (STELLITE 6), and 9.8% (tungsten carbide). Rolling resistance increased by 18.1% (38CrMoAl), 16% (STELLITE 6), and 23.4% (tungsten carbide). Friction coefficient increased by 3.5% (38CrMoAl), 2.8% (STELLITE 6), and 4.3% (tungsten carbide). Wear volume increased by 39.3% (38CrMoAl), 45.3% (STELLITE 6), and 48.9% (tungsten carbide). Specifically, using Hastelloy C-276 alloy as the extruder head metal material yields the best NR/BR composite material dispersion, highest ten times tear strength, excellent anti-wet skid resistance, and minimum rolling resistance. Conversely, using the other alloys results in varying reductions in the physical and mechanical properties of NR/BR composite materials. This research is crucial for improving rubber product quality and extending extruder head lifespan.
