Abstract Nymphoides fallax is a distylous tetraploid species, endemic to Mexican and Guatemalan highland wetlands. Two floral morphs have been previously reported for N. fallax, but no studies have quantified floral organ variations and seed viability. Here we describe the reproductive system and seed morphology, compare measurements of short-and long-styled flowers, and test seed viability. We studied flowers, fruits, and seeds using light and scanning electron microscopes. Morphs differ in sepal, petal, corolla tube, filament, anther, pollen, pistil, stigma, and stigmatic papillae size. Further differences include stigma and stigmatic papillae shape. Morphs have similar ovule and seed number, and the studied population is nearly isoplethic. Fruit and seed production was high, as was seed viability (86 %). We noted prominently projecting tubercles and caruncles not previously reported for N. fallax seeds. Seeds float on the water surface and seedlings are established in the field. Even when studies of other populations are needed, our findings suggest that sexual reproduction and intra-morph incompatibility may play a substantial role in this aquatic plant, although it is capable of strong vegetative reproduction. Understanding the role of distyly can contribute to elucidate N. fallax reproductive biology, and to establish conservation practices for the species and wetland ecosystems.

Abstract Plant functional connectivity integrates species-environment interactions, dispersal vectors, and landscape structure variables to understand species’ spatial responses to habitat fragmentation. Functional connectivity is still poorly understood for aquatic plants despite the promise it holds for informing wetland conservation across landscapes. Through a landscape genetics approach, we quantified plant functional connectivity among geographically isolated wetlands by genotyping seven nuclear microsatellite loci in 18 populations of Nymphoides fallax, a tetraploid aquatic plant endemic to Mexican and Guatemalan highland wetlands. We tested if wetland connectivity, quantified with three connectivity indices, translated to high genetic diversity within populations and if geographical distance per se explained gene flow among wetlands. We also tested if landscape features such as vegetation and surface water cover explained gene flow among N. fallax populations. Our results show that wetland connectivity is positively associated with genetic diversity over threshold distances up to 5 km. The Si Hanski connectivity index, with wetland area incorporated, was the best predictor explaining the effective number of alleles, allelic richness, and expected heterozygosity. Population-specific FST, as a proxy for gene flow, was better explained by a model including forest cover than by geographical distance or water cover. Our findings highlight the importance of forest conservation to maintain gene flow at the landscape scale for N. fallax and allows the detection of key populations to maintain genetic diversity and connectivity. Understanding wetland connectivity is critical to address wetland loss in human-impacted landscapes.

Abstract Despite the increasing evidence that ploidy is a factor of importance for environmental adaptation, little work has hitherto been done about cytotype patterns in aquatic plants. We tested a set of hypotheses concerning the drivers of ploidy in macrophyte communities at worldwide scale, and also how ploidy state may be related to other attributes of aquatic plants such as community diversity, species range size and invasiveness. We built a global ploidy database with 1574 species (representing 45.0 % of the known total global pool) and allocated ploidy state to species occurring in 238 10 × 10° gridcells worldwide. We used Boosted Regression Trees Analysis to analyse the relationship of 16 global-scale spatial, landscape, environmental and biotic variables with ploidy state. Our results demonstrate that (1) Polyploid and mixed ploidy species occupied larger geographical ranges than haploid/diploid species. (2) There were contrasting latitudinal patterns between haploid/diploid and polyploid species with polyploidy increasing in importance with distance from the equator, while species richness measures also influenced ploidy state. (3) Climatic factors, especially temperature and evapotranspiration, are congruent with macrophyte species ploidy state, across the planet. Our data support the assertion that increased chromosome number is an adaptation associated with plant survival of harsh environmental conditions, especially in environmentally-stressed high latitudes. Our findings increase the generality of knowledge of the large-scale factors that drive cytotype patterns in vascular plant species at global scale. The ploidy database provides a resource to support further studies about the effects of varying environmental conditions on ploidy state in aquatic plants, at differing scales.

Abstract Nymphoides fallax Ornduff (Menyanthaceae) is an aquatic distylous plant endemic to the Mexican and Guatemalan highlands. Although vegetative reproduction is frequently reported for Nymphoides species, evidence suggests a high prevalence of sexual reproduction in N. fallax. This study aimed: (i) to test homomorphic self-incompatibility, (ii) to describe aspects of floral phenology, estimate the pollen/ovule ratio and the viability of pollen grains, (iii) to evaluate floral morph proportion in natural populations, and (iv) to identify the assemblage of floral visitors, estimating their frequency and capacity to transport N. fallax pollen. The studied populations were located in Central Mexico. We carried out a controlled pollination experiment with eight treatments (n = 80), and we also estimated pollen/ovule ratio and observed floral phenology aspects. We counted the proportion of floral morphs in seven natural populations and observed the presence of visitors to 891 flowers in three natural populations. We observed pollen on the insects using scanning electron microscopy. Our findings showed that N. fallax has diurnal flowers with one-day anthesis, high stigma receptivity, high pollen viability, and intramorph self-incompatibility. The average pollen/ovule ratio (5.1 × 10³) was consistent with xenogamy. Five natural populations were found to have both morphs in approximately equal proportions, and two populations consisted only of the long-style morph. An assemblage of 28 floral visitor taxa was observed in 944 visits. The most frequent visitors were exotic bees (Apis mellifera: 43.5 %) and native dipterans (Ephydridae family: 33.3 %; Stratiomyidae and Syrphidae: 7.2 %). Pollen grains were observed attached to the bodies of the most frequent visitors, suggesting that they are potentially effective pollinators. This research expands the knowledge of heterostylous syndrome and sexual reproduction in N. fallax.

Abstract No previous study has examined the large-scale distributional drivers of the entire global pool of 3,499 macrophyte species, despite the obvious importance of this for understanding the macroecology of these plants. To assess the hypothesis that natural rather than human-related transfer vectors act as the primary long-distance drivers of global movement of aquatic macrophytes, we analysed current macrophyte species distributions in relation to a set of human-related and natural transfer vectors. Most macrophytes (2,492 species: 71.2% of the global total) are endemic to a single ecozone, and generally lack the various functional adaptations needed for successful long-distance propagule transport. Such traits are, however, common in the 1,007 (28.8%) species native in > 1 ecozone. In total, 779 species (22.3%) are introduced, naturalised or invasive (I species) in one or more ecozones outwith their native range. The proportion of I species varies between ecozones and is best predicted by annual temperature and longitude. A migratory bird transfer vector and climatic variables strongly predict global native macrophyte species occurrence. Some native species of Miocene origin (or older) may have had their world distribution influenced by ancient vicariance events, while inter-ecozone hydrochory and Late Quaternary climate change are also relevant factors influencing a few species.

Abstract Nymphoides species are cosmopolitan aquatics with floating leaves and frequent in freshwater wetlands. Nymphoides fallax is restricted to highlands of Mexico and Guatemala. We tested the transferability of 10 microsatellite loci previously developed for N. peltata in 18 populations of N. fallax. Seven polymorphic loci were successfully amplified. Allele sizes were automatically obtained using 2100 Bioanalyzer Expert software. Genotypes were determined using the allele dosage method. Chromosome counts confirmed that N. fallax is a tetraploid. Alleles per locus ranged from 5 to 17; the observed and expected heterozygosities per population ranged from 0.51 to 0.66 and from 0.72 to 0.81, respectively. We observed higher genetic diversity within populations (92%) than among populations (8%). Our results show that cross-amplification is a valid technique for studying Nymphoides. No clones were found, indicating that N. fallax relies heavily on sexual reproduction. Our work may stimulate further population genetic studies of the genus Nymphoides that could be useful for conservation programs, as well as to promote additional research on landscape genetics and reproductive mechanisms in aquatic plants.

Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large‐scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay.
