Abstract Autophagy is a fundamental multi-tasking adaptive cellular degradation and recycling strategy. Following its causal implication in age-related decline, autophagy is currently among the most broadly studied and challenged mechanisms within aging research. Thanks to these efforts, new cellular nodes interconnected with this phylogenetically ancestral pathway and unexpected roles of autophagy-associated genetic products are unveiled daily, yet the history of functional adaptations of autophagy along its evolutive trail is poorly understood and documented. Autophagy is traditionally studied in canonical and research-wise convenient model organisms such as yeast and mice. However, unconventional animal models endowed with extended longevity and exemption from age-related diseases offer a privileged perspective to inquire into the role of autophagy in the evolution of longevity. In this mini review we retrace the appearance and functions evolved by autophagy in eukaryotic cells and its protective contribution in the pathophysiology of aging.

Abstract Nowadays, dielectric metasurfaces are a promising platform in many different research fields such as sensing, lasing, all-optical modulation and nonlinear optics. Among all the different kinds of such thin structures, asymmetric geometries are recently attracting increasing interest. In particular, nonlinear light-matter interaction in metasurfaces constitutes a valid approach for achieving miniaturized control over light. Here, we demonstrate nonlinear asymmetric generation of light in a dielectric metasurface via second harmonic generation. By inverting the illumination direction of the pump, the nonlinear emitted power is modulated by more than one order of magnitude. Moreover, we demonstrate how a properly designed metasurface can generate two completely different images at the second harmonic when the direction of illumination is reversed. Our results may pave the way to important opportunities for the realization of compact nanophotonic devices for imaging applications by densely integrating numerous nonlinear resonators.

Abstract Background: Laparoscopic resection (LR) is increasingly performed for gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). The aim of this study is to investigate the short-term outcomes and therapeutic effects of LR compared to Open Resection (OR) for gastric GISTs.
Methods: All 12 patients undergoing surgery (LR vs. OR) for gastric GISTs during 2012-2021 in a single center, were analyzed retrospectively. All outcomes were compared between the two groups.
Results: No statistical significant differences were observed between the two groups (LR vs. OR) as far as operative time (143 vs. 144.5 minutes, P=0.81 NS) blood loss (70 vs. 125 mL, P=0.2 NS), early postoperative complications (2 vs. 1, Fisher 1 P=NS), length of hospital stay (8.5 vs. 14.2 days, P=0.17 NS).
Conclusions: LR for GISTs is safe and effective. The only limiting factor for the widespread application of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is surgeon expertise in challenging cases.

Abstract An analysis of the peculiar features of optical wire antennas with displaced terminals is presented. Full-wave simulations and a semianalytical technique based on Pocklington's equation are used in order to systematically study the behavior of input impedance and field enhancement at the antenna terminals when the feed-gap region is shifted with respect to the center of the wire. A simple analytical model based on the evaluation of the effective wavelength of the propagating surface wave is also suggested for the interpretation of the results.

Abstract In the rich Western societies, the several crises at the beginning of this century focus on the worsening of old economic and social problems, which have taken on new importance in the cities undergoing a rapid transformation because of the globalization and the new structures of the labor market. These are issues that have called into question the traditional political systems, with significant effects on the evolution of democratic systems. These issues have been raised throughout the 20th century and today they are once again central to the structural transformations aforementioned and to the crisis of the welfare systems built in Europe during the so-called Golden Age. The theme of living in the peripheries reappears in a dramatic way; a problem exacerbated by the fact that today these areas are no longer just those outside the cities (shaped by the processes of the economic modernization of the 19th and 20th centuries) but they deeply characterize the urban fabric and are linked to the existential conditions of those who live there. The book combines historical and geographical perspectives, according to an interdisciplinary approach. It is possible to examine the policies adopted and to be adopted in these territories and the role that social forces and associative networks have played and can play in identifying adequate and durable responses to such complex problems. A long-term view and a more systemic analysis allow a reflection on the relationship between socio-economic development and the processes of construction of the living together in the different contexts of European cities. Social actors, in their various forms, have offered and are able to offer strategic contributions for the production of new development models, in which the quality of life in working-class peripheries and the processes of social inclusion will be once again a priority, as required by the urban agendas of this new millennium.

Abstract Silicene, the silicon equivalent of graphene, is attracting increasing scientific and technological attention in view of the exploitation of its exotic electronic properties. This novel material has been theoretically predicted to exist as a free-standing layer in a low-buckled, stable form, and can be synthesized by the deposition of Si on appropriate crystalline substrates. By employing low-energy electron diffraction and microscopy, we have studied the growth of Si on Ag(111) and observed a rich variety of rotationally non-equivalent silicene structures. Our results highlight a very complex formation diagram, reflecting the coexistence of different and nearly degenerate silicene phases, whose relative abundance can be controlled by varying the Si coverage and growth temperature. At variance with other studies, we find that the formation of single-phase silicene monolayers cannot be achieved on Ag(111).
